Saint does not indicate canonization. It indicates presence in Heaven. None of the saints of the Old Testament have been canonized. Many of the recognized Saints of the New Testament have not been canonized. Most of the saints in heaven are unknown and will never be canonized. Those that have been canonized are recognized by the Church as being in Heaven.
Strictly speaking, being “Canonized” means your name is included in the Canon at mass, the official prayer of the Church during the consecration. For most canonized saints, their names are only included in the canon on their feast day. But there are a handful whose names are included in the canon at any and every mass.
