Endurance is the word.
I grew up with Benjamin Orr of ‘The Cars’ … this was their big hit in ’84 …
This was a big hit — and my business partner at the time just couldn’t get enough of this tune … he’d blast it all over the construction sites we worked …
Worst Cars song ever.
Truth! If I’m not mistaken it was also their biggest hit.
The music industry…..go figure.
Also in 1984 was Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Also completely horrible and their biggest and worst hit. Indeed, the music-buying public. Go figure.
Phil Collins story:
Went to a Lollapalooza in the early nineties and an all girl rock band, L7, was playing (they were really good) and people were throwing beach balls and other things around , just having fun, and some of it was landing on the stage and then a stuffed animal knocked over the microphone stand while the singer was singing. The band stopped playing and the singer starts yelling “the next fucking person that throws one more fucking thing on this stage, we are going to fucking leave and have fucking Phil Collins songs played for the rest of our fucking set! ”
The entire crowd went dead silent and no more problems. Incredible crowd control that I have never witnessed since.
LOL !!
Never thought Collins has a sense of humour.
Cheers to him.
Well, original band got back together and put out this classic album, saw this tour a few times!
John Lords opening notes on this tune are epic!
Oh man..you like organ? You’ll love this too, Garth Hudson of “The Band” laying down some tasty organ opening notes for “Chest Fever”
Three Dog Night does a killer version of Chest Fever also, I actually like it better.
Howz about “Love At First Sting”?
Perhaps some Maiden, song is also title of album!
Fitting song for these interesting times!
Much hasn’t changed.
Oh man, you beat me to it, one of my favorite movies of all time! When Emilio says “I can’t believe I used to like this band” was hilarious. Always liked Keith better than Henry anyway.
So, next up in the much hasn’t changed since 1984 lineup we have:
This is spooky. I forgot about this one.
Time when something innovative was created was 70ties.
From then on, everything went more or less down.
The were some pearls in the 80ties, but not that much.
Well technological archievements helped some ( Tangerine Dream, Holger Czukay, Kraftwerk and others), Frank Zappa held back the tide a little. Peter Gabriel was ok, but for me personally Genesis was better. Same goes to Roger Waters, David Gilmour vs Pink Floyd.
Alice Cooper became boring.
Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani did some amazing stuff. Steve Hackett.
King Crimson. Brian Eno, Brian Ferry. David Sylvian.
But as everyone can see, my tastes are rather limited, and perhaps most of you folks see it different.
Everyone’s choices are their own.
A worthwhile comment(ary) … good taste in stuff here …
Thanks Tony.
1984 ? Nobody has posted this yet?
Saw “The Diamond Dogs” tour at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A., before they wrecked it and put on roof on it, totally destroyed the acoustics. Bowie was fantastic, saw him three times in my life, he never disappointed.
This ain’t rock ‘n’ roll
This is . . . genocide!
fleas the size of rats…
rats the size of cats..
Oops – this is not a reply to the Bowie lyrics. It was meant to stand alone as a fresh thread.
Amazing year in music! Take me back!
Next round:
To be honest, I really found the mid-80’s pretty flat, pop-wise. Some alt stuff was sorta OK. Too much fake, programmed percussion, for one thing.
Mikkey Dee on drums:

well………………………….
It ain’t rock or pop but…………………..
Willie did it right ! (1984)
Hot for Teacher – awesome video.
More 1984:
and a big hat tip to Bananarama. Another all female band that didn’t have to parade around naked to attract listeners.
Pretenders ruled!!
More cheesy synth pop.
Dire Straits-Romero and Juliet
===
IMHO … All of the above are pretty lame tunes by either lame talent …. OR talent gone south …
That being said, a few of the tunes remind me, wistfully, of TRYING to romance some fine fillies back in the day as a 17 year old 🙂
1984 rocked hard. Let’s not forget these guys… made it to #1 in Washington D.C. when i was a sweet 21 on my first gov job.
