What do you think whoever stole is going to do with it? I mean one does not walk up to rail cars and steal 30 tons of Ammonium Nitrate
I don’t know how dense the stuff is but 60,000 lbs. is not a huge load for a single rail car. Out here there are numerous massive ag storage businesses located right next to the tracks which both load and unload rail cars with ag products like corn and beans. I imagine some other stuff too.
Whether an accident or on purpose there must be dozens of places along the line where this could be done very fast with the necessary equipment, storage and transport on site. Some of these places have several silos big enough to unload entire trains of grain. If it was done in error it would only be a tiny percent of what the silos can hold and the end user might be the first guy to find out with a load of tainted grain. There is probably a diesel tank on site too so a bad guy could also mix it up and haul it away at such a facility.
With all the CCP “gotaways” at the border does stuff like this make one a bit nervous??
Great HR. I’m leaning towards hijacked for AG. Seems that with fertalizer being in short supply, this amount NH₄NO₃ could yield a good price and be very easy to move. I do appreciate the terrorist point of view as well and certainly making one a little nervous understanding the power of ANFO..
I will say it was either a mistake at a granary where the operator was half stepping and distracted, or stolen for fertilizer or stolen for evil purposes. Imagine a full railcar of ANFO like the OKC mix they enhanced with TOVEX being touched off rolling through a populated area. Not a happy thought as I am just a few hundred yards from a UP track.
Scary thought indeed.
