Yulia Hicks, the North Carolina girl denied a kidney transplant by Duke University surgeons because she was not vaccinated against Covid, will get her new kidney Thursday
Finally, a happy ending.
In December, I wrote about Yulia Hicks, a 14-year-old North Carolina girl denied a lifesaving kidney transplant for the crime of being unvaccinated.
Transplant surgeons at Duke University Hospital told her parents that Yulia could not stay on the transplant list if she did not have a Covid shot, even though she had already had Covid.
The story, which Fox News picked up, led to a wave of publicity – and more than 30 potential donors stepped forward. Fortunately, one was a match.
Now, another North Carolina hospital has stepped up, and Yulia will receive a new kidney from a live donor tomorrow.
Yulia’s life has not been easy.
She came from Ukraine to the United States in December 2018 and was given up by her first two adoptive families before the Hickses adopted her in 2021. She suffers from Senior Loken Syndrome, a genetic condition that damages her kidneys and eyes.
But she remains optimistic, her mother Christine said in an email.
“Yulia is the most easy-going child I have ever met,” Christine said. “We are looking at one week of hospitalization, and she plans to read, write and play card games.”
Yulia, whose birthday is in June, asked only that she have an early birthday party because she knows she will face months of quarantine after the transplant as her body accepts the new kidney, Christine said.

The family does not know the identity of the donor but hopes to meet him in the years to come to thank him, Christine said. “We ask for prayers for Yulia and her donor for flawless surgeries and painless recoveries for both.”
Meanwhile, the North Carolina legislature is considering “Yulia’s Law,” which would bar transplant discrimination on the basis of Covid vaccination status. The bill overwhelmingly passed North Carolina’s House on May 2 and has passed a first reading in the Senate.

Here is also some good news from the zoo known as Durham where Duke is located.
Woman of color , going out on a limb here, 26-year-old Taqwana Katrel Raiford takes interest in public schooling of child after zoom meeting.

Lol! That’s a pretty strong limb you are on.
Without an Afro’Postrophe? There’s reasonable doubt there – although the “news” stories all have no picture, so . . .
A parent threatened to blow up the school.
With everyone in it.
A Totally serious threat?
No.
An opportunity to unnecessarily traumatize children?
Yes.
Wonderful story, meanwhile the rest of the collective USA is waiting around to obey the next government dictate to be ordered by the powers that be. It all ends when we want it to end, become ungovernable!
My uncle-in-law was recently diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma. Yes, he is injected and boosted 1x. Getting treatment from KU med. He was told to get another booster to protect him while he is in treatment. He probably did what he was told. I expect a funeral in the near future.
Now watch them kill her new kidney with Remdesivir . . .
Nope. Next comes gender re-assignment surgery.
There needs to be a ‘law’ that states you cannot discriminate against someone for lack of a kill shot, specifically the cov. wowsers Talk about clown world run by clowns.
If my child were being denied a life saving kidney transplant by surgeons, I would be waiting for the surgeon’s one by one when they got off work and remove their kidney with a pocket knife in the parking lot…. But that’s just me….
Watch that Ashe County A*hole Roy Cooper veto it, then get overidden.
Cooper does suck…..
The reckoning for these acts of hate against the “unvaxxed” needs to be very spectacular.
Duke, and other “institutions of higher learning,” and medikil outlets, e.g. hospitals, that engage in this disgusting discrimination could benefit from some unbridled unrest and even violins.
Pliers and blowtorch time? We goin’ Medieval already? I still have my insouciance decorations up!
