THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Lincoln warns that America is becoming a “house divided” – 1858

Abraham Lincoln - Freedom From Religion Foundation

On June 16, 1858, newly nominated senatorial candidate Abraham Lincoln addresses the Illinois Republican Convention in Springfield and warns that the nation faces a crisis that could destroy the Union. Speaking to more than 1,000 delegates in an ominous tone, Lincoln paraphrased a passage from the New Testament: “a house divided against itself cannot stand.”

The issue dividing the nation was slavery’s place in the growing western territories and the extent of federal power over individual states’ rights. Lincoln declared that only the federal government had the power to end slavery. While the southern states relied on an economy and lifestyle dependent upon the labor provided by enslaved African Americans, the North opposed slavery. The northern states also considered industrialization and manufacturing the key to America’s economic future, not farming.

The entrance of new states into the Union, such as Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska, brought to a head unresolved conflicts over which government entity—state or federal—should make the final decision regarding slavery. For his part, Lincoln firmly believed that slavery was immoral and was wholly incompatible with the principles of the Declaration of Independence embodied in the phrase “all men are created equal.” However, Lincoln prioritized preserving the Union above all else.

After Lincoln’s speech, several of his friends expressed dismay at its “radical” content. Leonard Swett, a lawyer and friend of Lincoln’s, later wrote that Lincoln’s talk of using federal power to end slavery was “unfortunate and inappropriate,” although Swett admitted that in retrospect Lincoln was ultimately correct. At the time, the people of Illinois ultimately agreed with Swett: Lincoln lost the close Senate race of 1858 to the more moderate Stephen Douglas, who advocated states’ sovereignty. Lincoln’s eloquent speech, though, earned him national attention and his strong showing in the polls encouraged the people to back his ultimately successful bid for the presidency in 1860.

Lincoln was going to prevent the legal succession of the USA if he had to kill every Southerner to do it. Just like Nato (USA) is doing in the Ukraine.
Strange when Jesus spoke of a “house divided” it was in a conversation about satan or Beelzebub and demons.
Matthew 12:22-28

“the North opposed slavery” – Absolute BS.
The Emancipation Proclamation wasn’t even written until the third year of the civil war. It was introduced to get the abolishonist on board with Lincolns war. At the time leading up to 1862 the North was losing and Lincoln had to shift the narative of his war. The Emancipation Proclamation was introduced on January 1, 1863. Lincoln needed more infantry so he was catering to the niggers to fight in return for freedom. Slavery was wrong then and it’s wrong now but the civil war not fought over slavery, like it or not. Lincoln wanted a Democracy at the cost of our Republic. He got it. The Southern Politcal class did alot of fucked up shit, but lets not blur the lines of history anymore than they already have.

Slavery was LEGAL, never forget that, there were slaves in the Northern States still to the end of the war. The Emancipation Proclamation was only for the CSA.
A war against the law, just like today.
And just like then immigrants are being brought in to do the fighting for the North/dc. Nothing new under the Sun. Irish, Central Americans, it doesn’t matter.

If I had a time machine I might go back and put a bullet in Lincoln’s head, in 1858.
Just might save 500,000 white American lives.

I have a few ancestors that fought and some died for the Union in the CW, just like WWI and WWII…hypothetically to save this nation from some perceived evil. I’m beginning to think that the pendulum has swung back and now the evil is the Demoncrat controlled governments in this nation that need to be destroyed…before they destroy us. If our borders, language and culture don’t survive Brandon and his Rockefeller cabal what’s the point?

How were the Lincoln-Douglas debates recorded?
Were there shorthand stenographers in the audience furiously transcribing?
And if so, who could trust their accuracy/veracity in the results?

How were the Lincoln-Douglas debates recorded?

Interesting question.
Some history..

One of the few prominent systems that came out of the 18th century was crafted by Samuel Taylor, whose work went on to inspire Sir Isaac Pitman to improve the artform by integrating the recording of sounds as symbols in his own system, Stenographic Sound-Hand that he published in 1837.

This collection of signs and symbols captured vowels, consonants, and double consonants. Users were also able to distinguish similar sounds through similar signs and reduce the number of strokes necessary through clever use of shading. Benn Pitman, Sir Isaac’s brother, minorly modified this system when he introduced it in America. Because the symbols captured sounds instead of letters, Pitman’s shorthand system was easily usable by a wide range of languages around the world.
