When we wanted fireworks we went to a guy named Ritchie on 15th Avenue and Cropsey Ave in Bensonhurst Brooklyn . The guy had a gold chain with a 20 dollar St Gaudens on it and a brand new Caddy in the driveway . His house was stacked with fireworks lol. The good ole days 50 years ago when the mob ruled Brooklyn.
In my neighborhood, in a good-sized city where the sale of fireworks was illegal, we could walk over to a city cop’s house where usually because it was daytime and he’d be on the job, his wife sold em to us. And we could buy anything the big fireworks stands sold. You could fire them off in city limits, but vendors always did and still do set up tents right at the county lines.
Lest we forget.

When I was 13 I delivered news papers. Around Independance day the paper would offer fire works for new subcriptions to their paper boys. Early june I would solicit door to door for new subscribers for credits towards fireworks. That year I ended up with two Red Devil Block Party firework assortments. Again, I was 13 years old and had enough fireworks to start WWIII with no parental consent. My how times have changed.
And … yet … you did NOT start WW3 … same as folks have realized about guns in the US in private hands — more than 400,000,000 of them and no one’s started a war here …

Now you can transition to become the other sex at thirteen without parents consent. We pretty much did anything we wanted at 13 . Sipped beers ,had jobs , made out with our little girl friends etc . As long as the police didn’t bring us home we were golden lol.
My Dad was an electrician and would connect the electrical service for 3 or 4 fireworks stands in our town. He would take cash for the material and “store credit” for his labor. He would carry the 4 of us from stand to stand and tell us how much we could each “buy” with his credit. All the neighborhood kids would come to our backyard for the fireworks and we gladly shared with our friends. That is probably the reason July 4th is my favorite holiday of the year.
Tuesday, we will have kids, grandkids (and a few of their friends) out to our house in the country for food and fireworks. Everything is green, so not much chance of a fire this year. I will still stand fire watch for at least 30 minutes after the last rocket.
Every girl or woman in these pictures is at least a grandmother by now, if not a great grandmother. And to their husbands, they’re just as pretty today as back then.
I cut enough grass and washed enough windows and cars to be the first kid in my year to get both a car and a motorbike. That work ethic stayed with me all the way to retirement. Thanks Dad, you taught me well.
