Turns out that conspiracy theory wasn’t a conspiracy theory either
American hospitals made more money than ever during Covid, thanks to special government subsidies, a new study shows.
Hospital profit margins in 2020 and 2021 more than doubled compared to 2019, researchers reported in JAMA Health Forum last month. In all, hospitals made at least $16 billion more in profits during the two Covid years than they did in 2019, the researchers found.
Hospitals delayed profitable elective procedures early in the pandemic and had extra costs for traveling nurses and protective gear. But the 20 percent bonus they received for Covid patients and other special funding more than made up the difference for most hospitals.
“COVID-19 relief funding aided in operating margins reaching all-time highs,” the researchers wrote. “Funding amounts may have been larger than was necessary for many hospitals.”
The data come from more than 4,400 hospitals, nearly every medical center in the United States. Hospitals that were already profitable tended to have the biggest gains.
Overall hospital operating margins rose from 2.8 percent before Covid to 6.5 percent in 2020 and 2021, the highest ever, the researchers found.

Fewer than 300 hospitals, or about 6 percent, went from profits in 2019 to losses during Covid, while almost 800 saw their losses turn into profits.
Some hospitals did far better, especially those that were profitable before 2020.
Those medical centers were presumably experts at maximizing their financial results even before Covid hit and moved quickly to take advantage of the new laws and bonuses. The most profitable 600 American hospitals each posted annual operating income of at least $38 million during Covid, the researchers reported.

“Covid” was profitable for a lot of people too. An economy of debt-gibs-cronycap value extraction is going to generate a lot of “profit” when the entire market is subjected to arbitrary top-down controls.
Another way to look at it is that most of the professional services are middlemen acting as fee harvesters and gatekeepers of capital movement. “Covid” unleashed one of the greatest wealth transfers in human history. Nearly all of that was wealth moving uphill. For that you need volume and velocity and the heavy hand of globo-cronycap regulation to run the pumps. Done.
Tack on the already blooming debt and asset bubbles and you have a rising tide from which the fee/middleman class can exact a heavy pound. My friends in the asset/services classes were “working from home” and raking cash. Same goes for the designated “essential” sectors. Like cannabis dispensaries. If you were fortunate enough to work in anointed field, chances are the capital spigot was full blast.
Within this hospital profit narrative there also resides the truth that the cost of paper profit includes a lot of losses in health services in less-profitable areas, massive labor dislocation that may never be stabilized, and a widening divide between levels of care between the cloud and dirt markets. The momentum toward single-payer and premiun bifurcation was also significant.
But like all of these reports on the paper status of various enterprises, these are but the scorecards of the looting phase of the collapsing Empire.
Profit, “to advance”, is both irrelevant – in a system built on lies and yoking of actual value creation to the managers of those stables of lies, and very telling of the actual nature of Progress. Toward what, you ask? Exactly.

The morning after a buddy back home died his widow called to break the news. Put very simply (his passing was early in the china virus scam): he went to the hospital, was checked out, told there was nothing they could do for him, told to go home but come back if symptoms got worse. Of course the symptoms got worse (he had other pre-existing conditions) so he went back, was admitted, and died 6 hours later. Ka-ching, ka-ching.
