Had a house outside Robert Lee in West Texas for four years 84 to 88, worked in San Angelo running a C-store on 3rd shift for a while, then in retail Loss Prevention at two different companies dragging shoplifting thieves back in…sometimes with needed foot sweeps, choke holds, arm bars, and no BS ceremony. I had been heavy into judo…and was built for it.
Moved there from NJ bringing my West Texas wife close to her family…bought her Aunt’s & Uncle’s home. I was escaping the hell out of the crowded, liberal N.E. and getting away from Rich Men north of Richmond!
I loved it. The place had a dozen mature fruit trees…I put a garden in, it had a huge swamp cooler…the Rio Concho River (more like a stream) just behind it, and all the land and solitude I wanted to wander around on with my ole 782 gear pack and a couple of canteens on my cartage belt.
I was told once I was the only Yankee in Coke County…but there was a ranch hand on a local spread from Hawaii…I asked the guy who told me that to find out if the ranch hand was from north or south Hawaii…so we could get a true count.
I almost became a Deputy Sheriff…it was down between three of us…the Marshall – I swear to Jesus his name was Marshall – his name was Marshall Marshall…he almost hired me…I could tell he wanted to…cuz he told me exactly that in a sad voice…after he apologized…that he couldn’t as it could cost him too much.
I was 35 in 85, a former Marine, Viet Nam Veteran, the other two were in their early 20’s with no experience. I had made dozens of shoplifting apprehensions in San Angelo (and countless more in NJ before).
After all the interviews and tests (I came out on top) Marshall Marshall brought me back in and told me flat out I was the best qualified…and he really liked me…but if he didn’t give the job to a local young’in (and the one that got it was connected to a powerful family) and gave it to the only Yankee in town (turned out the Hawaiian was from south Hawaii after all) he would lose the next election for sure.
I understood.
I loved West Texas…rugged, stark, tough country…tough people.

That’s awesome, mark. I haven’t really spent time in West TX so can’t comment on what it’s like today. It just didn’t look too appealing in that picture. But…that’s coming from someone who believes they once lived in one of the most beautiful places the world has to offer. 🙂
TX does have some pretty areas…I think my area is pretty – it’s green & hilly. I have over 100 trees on my property and my horse lives on a gorgeous ranch down the road. Love my neighbors, too. Couldn’t really say that where I used to live.
Wonder if West TX is full of illegals now. Probably so. They are definitely all over my area.
Planning to go to Big Bend Nat’l Park in next several months – have been waiting on the weather to cool off first. Guess I’ll get a chance to really see West TX then.
But BL, we humans can alter all that if we just turn to government for the solution…..

Imagine the fear…or the joy…when Our Lord returns in His GLORY with the whole heavenly host.
