From my mate back in suburban Cleveland … Benjamin Orr …
You knew him? I served some of the Cars lunch a couple of times, in a little family-owned place on Newbury St. in Boston, near their studio. They’d wander around the area at times, fortyish years ago.
Met Ben in ’58 or ’59 when both our families moved to the West Side of Cleveland in the ‘burbs …
He was with a band called ‘The Grasshoppers’ in Cleveland — one of the first 50,000 or so early Beatle-clone bands in the US … and those were some days to be around, what with Battle of the Bands contests every Friday and/or Saturday night at some venue or other (UAW Hall, Polish Women’s Hall, etc.) … and the local bars and clubs were always having a lot of live music entertainment in those days. Great stuff … great music … great times …
The Grasshoppers’ biggest hit was ‘Pink Champagne’, which Ben composed with a tiny bit of my help with the wording. A nice tune at the time.
He and The Grasshoppers were a big hit on a local TV music show hosted by their manager, Joe Mayer (a local DJ) …
My frien Dave and I did equipment set-up for Ben and The Grasshoppers … and the hit was when they were one of the lead-in groups for The Beatles when they hit Cleveland Public Hall (or Public Auditorium) in August, 1964 … and, being back stage setting up equipment, I got to meet The Beatles. Quite a thrill …
Ben was a very talented musician and vocalist … and I was really glad that he and The Cars made it so big (5 or 6 platimum albums, as I recall) …
But, then, in late-August, 2003, Ben was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer … and died about 5 weeks later (early-October, 2003) …
He was good people and a good friend … and he got to make great music.
great submittal, AA.
Nuther one we lost too early to the big C.
