Technically, the last draft ended in 1972, not “enacted”. I know because my draft number was #8, and I JUST “missed out” by around 6 months, thank da lordy for that.
My brother , not so lucky. At #5 he went, but enlisted instead and went to various places like Rangsdorf, but not Vietnam. He ended up PTSD anyway, and like me, he hated authority and maybe saw too many dead bodies since they all came back through Rangsdorf, and his job was to meet the planes and play music (in the army band) to greet them. Yeah, that would have bothered me also.
I have mixed feelings about the draft. I assume there again wouldn’t be exceptions like early Vietnam, and when everyone’s children’s have to go, public support for stupid wars goes bye-bye pretty fast even if subscription is a kind of slavery.
