They won’t come to a call and they always travel in a group
which means dozens of eyes and noses constantly scanning
for danger. A horny bull will charge in to a call and be killed rather easily at times. Cows are REALLY wary and don’t respond to calls except to answer vocally. I lucked out. I saw a heard moving after the bull bugled and headed them off moving uphill in thick timber. I ran hard uphill and guessed where they might go.

I used to hunt every year until 12 years ago………hunting partner got too old to hump mountains.
We hunted the unit up the East fork of the San Juan river at the bottom of Wolf creek pass…….Pagosa side.
That entire area is beetle kill now. Very sad in that was once beautiful back country dark timber hunting.
Again congrats on your success………..it aint easy hunting elk in the Rockies………..even when your young.

From experience I’ve learned that these asswipes have seen little fighting. They’ve used size and bravado to frighten people into complying with them. Then when they meet up with one of us little fellas that have a few skills, these asswipes go down pretty fast with a well placed haymaker just below the ear.
Just keep the head up and have a quick trigger, nothing fancy. Boom, down they go…
