As a data person I’m a little turned off at how bad this visualization is. The stacked bar on separate axes is misleading. Multi-variate time series line charts are better for this purpose (and much sexier too).
Plus, are these rates n per 100k all-cause deaths for that demographic group or n per 100k violent deaths? I suspect the latter based on the rates, but if so, what are the categories other than suicide, homicide, cops that make up the vast majority of white male death any given year? This alone could be telling its own data story.
Not that I disagree with Jim’s conclusion above, but we should not aspire to be as pseudo-scientific as they are.
