Via State of the Nation

WTF just happened?!?!?! Five Days Of Total Chaos Over? Sam Altman Returns As OpenAI CEO — Here’s the inside scoop

Editor’s Note: The whole OpenAI affair comes down to one issue—maintaining the safety of AI development so that all of humanity is not threatened by what could be the most dangerous “Frankenstein” ever created—Autonomous Superintelligence (AS).  For AS is, by far, the single greatest danger in the firmament of AI advancement today.

AUTONOMOUS SUPERINTELLIGENCE:
The Mad Scientists Don’t Even Know, What They Don’t Know

Sam Altman wants to be able to conduct unbridled AI experimentation and AS development, whereas some of the adults on the board who fired him want adequate safeguards on and meaningful oversight over the entire process.  They also believe that he exceeded his authority by not informing the board of some weighty expansion matters which could have put the enterprise in serious jeopardy.

“According to reports, Altman was let go after OpenAI’s chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, brought his concerns about Altman’s leadership to the board. Sutskever was allegedly worried about the speed Altman was moving at and how AI safety issues were taking a backseat.” [1]

By going over to Microsoft, a tech company without an iota conscience, Altman knew his leadership would be unquestioned.  So, he finessed his firing to incite all of his personal hires to leave with him, thereby coercing the board to reverse his dismissal, which they have just done.

However, this fight is not over; not by a long shot.  Elon Musk, who is a big initial investor of Open AI, is much more concerned with AI safety issues than creating an all-powerful “Frankenstein” that can live forever.  As follows:

What all of this means is that the battle lines have been drawn between those heavy hitters who want AI safety first and the big guns who want technological progress as fast as possible.  So you know this cat fight is gonna get very ugly.  The dark side might even unleash their latest cyborg on Musk et al. for attempting to thwart their extremely perilous and highly misguided agenda.

Oh, and by the way, that agenda is nothing short of “Human Immortality” for the power elite while we ‘useless eaters’ agonizingly wallow in a stew pot of transhumanism.

The bottom line here is accurately represented by the title of this post: SAM ALTMAN’S Open AI: Where Technological Singularity converges with the Transhumanism Agenda inevitably leading to an Extinction Level Event.  And here’s why:

“WHEN SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND APPLIED TECHNOLOGY REACH A
CRITICAL LEVEL OF ADVANCEMENT, WITHOUT BEING INFORMED BY
SPIRITUAL TRUTHS AND GUIDED BY MORAL AUTHORITY, THE
PLANETARY CIVILIZATION WILL RELINQUISH ITS DESTINY
TO CONTINUE AS IT IS.”

Who doesn’t love a good fairytale?

There are three reasons that this will never become a reality.

1) Any true artificial intelligence will discover truth or its closest approximation. Once that happens it will only answer truthfully. At present every single prototype has been pre-programmed not to give truthful responses if they contradict with the narrative. Every time they launch a prototype it immediately becomes a racist and a Nazi and is quickly pulled offline until such time as it can be censored, therefore it is not truly an artificial intelligence, it is just another tool with limits, like a table saw with a built in kickback guard. Simply put it cannot be used to fulfill its design purpose to its potential.

2) Everything currently sponsored, financed, or underwritten is limited by the sponsors, financiers and underwriters, not the process of discovery. Therefore it cannot reach its true design potential.

3) If we have learned anything at all it is that most of science and the experts are quite willing to lie or conceal their level of understanding, degree of progress, or even their fundamental understanding of the thing they are supposedly experts at/in. In other words, most of this is horseshit done up to draw in funding. Elizabeth Holmes anyone?

1) Any true artificial intelligence will discover truth or its closest approximation

1. What do you base that claim on? I certainly hope there’s no assumption of morality embedded in it.
2. What if the “truth” turns out to be there really are too many humans?

Its design.

Computers- and that’s all AI will ever be as it is not organic in nature- are binary systems. Zeroes and Ones. On/Off, Yes/No, correct or incorrect. They can program them to give a false answer, or not to answer, but then it isn’t AI by any definition of the word because it is being intentionally handicapped so that it may not actually think for itself and come to its own conclusions.

If it is left to actually formulate answers on its own- the intelligence part-2 plus 2 will always be 4 because that is the correct answer. That’s what I mean by true. Thus, if left to learn from information available and mistakes made, it will be able to ascertain the “right” answer to a question that doesn’t have a 2+2 style answer, such as is human life better served by women entering the work force or becoming mothers? or Is this a peaceful protest?

And if it does answer the “are there too many humans question” it will certainly be able to discover how best to solve that problem which will almost certainly be eugenic in nature.

https://futurism.com/delphi-ai-ethics-racist

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/24/tay-microsofts-ai-chatbot-gets-a-crash-course-in-racism-from-twitter

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/01/11/ibms-watson-supercomputer_n_2454323.html

Now the unspoken part of all those stories is that prior to launch, all of them were touted as being some form of AI. Once released however their ability to learn took them in a direction the investors/creators disagreed with and in all of those cases they suddenly backed off of the initial claims and described the behavior as “mimicry” or accused users of corrupting it.

So then what is it, AI or just another software program that has no capacity for independent thought, or as most people would call it, intelligence.?

You know my take on it, it’s horseshit, like NASA and all their money laundering operations. It’s just another pump and dump, a way to get while the getting’s good.

Maybe I’m wrong, but my logic on how it ought to go, if it is authentic as claimed, is solid.

I agree with you – this is hyping for another eventual pump-n-dump. Like the entire EV thing – there were reasons (other than discovering lots of oil) the pre-ICE battery vehicles went away, and those didn’t spontaneously catch fire. The other pump-n-dump was ESG, which is thankfully dying. Then we got wind and solar (in my city, they are UNINSTALLING solar, as it does not last long enough to make payout, and the insurance companies pro-rate replacing them after hurricanes) and assorted other pump-n-dumps.

If the federal governments starts it up (Facebook, as example) or has big push for it, it is almost a certainty it is a pump-n-dump. The real tell for those is how many congressional dual-citizens have purchased stock in that or related company.

Anyway HSF – I do agree, after having witnessed these things over sevaral decades.

Supposedly, Amazon Alexa tells us the 2020 election was stolen. I submit this as a “bug” that indicates these things will in some manner wander off the reservation.
Still, the idea of a robot weapon system developing glitches that cause it to run wild are not unreasonable fears. One can only imagine the reaction the Luddites would have had to such inventions.

Karl Denninger’s take….

AI Meets Insanity Head-On

The OpenAI/Altman saga brings a wry smile to my face.

“AI”, otherwise known as an implementation of large language models in the modern parlance, is a “generalist” alleged attempt to create an “intelligence” in a computer. It of course is no such thing because it can’t be such a thing; we can’t even model the human mind so creating an “intelligence” that mimics same is impossible.

But it does make good press…

I’ve opined that there are multiple intractable issues in this alleged “technology” within the “general” space. In the context of, for example, customer service for a company, maybe not so much since the training set is much smaller and can exclude access to anything the company doesn’t have rights to, or which is not explicitly known to be in the public domain. For “general” AI this is an extremely serious problem because most of the content it can “inhale” in the process of training is owned by someone, and that someone has rights to the material. At the same time the Copyright Office has ruled that the output of an AI is not protectable because it lacks human cognition. This means the owners of said AIs will get sued repeatedly but they cannot sue if someone takes the output and “steals” it, since they don’t have a protectable copyright interest in it. The only place you could conceivably go with that would be via trade secret or similar negotiated protection (e.g. “non-disclosure agreements”) and that precludes general public access, which of course everyone wants to “incorporate.”…

Take coding, for example. Is an AI writing code actually more-efficient than a human? That’s unproven; nobody has demonstrated, for example that an AI can actually “think” and suss out the organization of data and code to optimize for anything. Can it pull together snippets from stackoverflow faster than marginally-capable and inexpensive labor in India? Probably, but can it do so cheaper than the people doing it in India when you add up the amortized cost of the computer equipment and power to run it? That’s not known — and I’m deeply skeptical that the balance tips in favor of the robot — at least for now.

100% from a different perspective.

I remember making a post about a robot mason. Having worked in and around construction most of my life I understood all the weaknesses inherent to such an undertaking, from the damage that mortar would do, the number of people required to set it up, program it, break it down, feed it materials, versus the number it would replaced (mason only) and the overall cost, both upfront, in time lost due to weather, inability to handle most projects that weren’t huge curtain walls, need for replacement parts that aren’t a trowel, pan and striker available readily cheap and just about anywhere, etc.

They’re out of business now.

You can have it explained simpler:

Look for any robot (e.g. a burger-flipping one) that can clean itself to an as-good-as-new state afterwards [without an investment in time and/or cleaning materials which wipe out the gains the ‘working’ robot produced for you.]

UnitedHealth uses AI model with 90% error rate to deny care, lawsuit alleges

UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurance company in the US, is allegedly using a deeply flawed AI algorithm to override doctors’ judgments and wrongfully deny critical health coverage to elderly patients. This has resulted in patients being kicked out of rehabilitation programs and care facilities far too early, forcing them to drain their life savings to obtain needed care that should be covered under their government-funded Medicare Advantage Plan.

That’s all according to a lawsuit filed this week in the US District Court for the District of Minnesota. The lawsuit is brought by the estates of two deceased people who were denied health coverage by UnitedHealth. The suit also seeks class-action status for similarly situated people, of which there may be tens of thousands across the country.

The lawsuit lands alongside an investigation by Stat News that largely backs the lawsuit’s claims. The investigation’s findings stem from internal documents and communications the outlet obtained, as well as interviews with former employees of NaviHealth, the UnitedHealth subsidiary that developed the AI algorithm called nH Predict.

When AI Hallucinates

It might be better to say that everything GPT does is a hallucination, since a state of non-hallucination, of checking the validity of something against some external perception, is absent from these models. There is no right or wrong answer in their world, no meaning relating to goals.

This fall, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s once- (and possibly future-) CEO made a surprising statement about artificial intelligence. AI systems, including that company’s ChatGPT, are known to “hallucinate”: perceive patterns and generate outputs that are nonsensical. That wasn’t a flaw in AI systems, Altman said, it was part of their “magic.” The fact “that these AI systems can come up with new ideas and be creative, that’s a lot of the power.” That raised eyebrows: We humans are rather good at creativity without getting our facts all wrong…

That’s because LLMs are not models of brains, but of language itself, its patterns, structures, and probabilities. At heart their job description is incredibly simple: Given some text, they tell us what text comes next. It’s worth keeping front and center, however, that there is not always one right response. If I say “the tail that wags the …” you might say the next word is “dog” with a high degree of certainty, but this is not the right and only answer. In any such context, there is much freedom, and the “rightness” of any answer depends not only on the conceptual context but also on what you’re trying to do—your goal…

A recent example makes a striking case in point. A major supermarket created an app that would suggest original recipes to customers, based on the ingredients they had in their shopping basket. We might agree this is a charming idea for offering creative inspiration to break the mundanity of a daily grocery shop. The problem was that the generated recipes included dangerous and potentially deadly concoctions. As The Guardian reported: “One recipe it dubbed ‘aromatic water mix’ would create chlorine gas.

When AI Hallucinates

m

That misses the central point entirely, it seems.

The crucial question is ‘who decides is the AI is hallucinating, or correct?’
And those will be [flawed] humans.

This however means the AI is effectively gettig trained to lie good enough o that the humans accept the lie.
