Nothing special. Our son has memorized pi beyond this kid, because his Dad challenged him to it. He has also memorized a whole bunch of other things beyond what I could imagine. Children have an amazing ability to retain information, but only if they have an interest or other reason to do so. Getting an A is not a powerful motivator to being out this ability.

Something you’ll never see on a job listing:

Job Requirement: Must be able to recite pi to 1ooth place.

Search “memorizing pi”
Tons of pages like:

Memorizing Pi

It’s a cute “parlor trick” level memorization skill.

He just rote memorized number groups in order.
Anyone with a functioning brain can be taught to memorize this information.. .. which no one really ever needs to memorize. You know, because it is written down, already.

I could stack fifty pennies on my right arm elbow, and catch all of them in my right hand in one fluid, sweeping motion…at age 6

Does that impress .anyone?

I know. Another thing our son does is solve the Rubik’s cube in 17 seconds. When he was in that phase of his life, I had to tell him that he is limited to 6 hours of Rubik’s cube per day. And PUT THE CUBE AWAY while we are having dinner!!! Parlor tricks, which impress those that cannot do it, which are useless in the big picture of life, but can be learned by anyone who wants to.

They should remind us all of the amazing possibilities that life offers though. Want to lose those extra 50 pounds you have been carrying around for a decade? Guess what, you can! Just do it and don’t ever stop working toward your goal.

When I was a kid, I memorized pi to eleven places – which still seems like more than enough to me.

When Dad was stationed at 7th Corps HQ near Stuttgart in the mid to late 50’s we had the most wonderful maid named Volly when spoke to us in both German and French. By the time we left we were fluent in both as speakers. When it came time for language in high school German was a not brainer and college as well.

Kids absorb everything around them……….

Yes – everything. Hence, it matters what’s (and especially, who’s) around them.

There is a vast difference between rote memory skills and visualization skills. Rote memory is good if you want to be a history teacher; visualization is good if you want to understand how things work and solve problems. Each has its place.

Must’ve been a slow news day…or just “one of those days” for TBP to post stuff like this.

I appreciate the hard work that goes into running TBP, so I’ll apologize for my slight criticism right now.

This is my daily go-to place for intellectually diverse news and commentary.

Is there such as thing as ‘intellectually diverse’? I used to think that high-IQ people would agree because they converge on the (objective) truth. Not true. I think truth is a strict bias for reality. Diversity is not a feature of strict bias. This is my topically diverse commentary of the day.

And I think a boy memorizing PI to whatever decimal places is more of a feat than some chick showing her cleavage and guys here gawk every Friday like is something amazing. Real life women come with female minds and programmatic opinions that ain’t so pretty. If you could implant some of the minds of the female intelligentsia here into some of that splendid superficiality—well, that would be no longer superficial but amazing. “The real thing is pound cake.” Two witticisms for the price of one. This was amazingly amazing. You’re welcome. My last name is not Adams.

As a certified dickhead, I have to ask: what is the practical value of being able to memorize pi to the 100th decimal place? Zero. The value of this kid memorizing a pointless amount of decimal places for Pi is that it will generate ad revenue for the video on jootube thereby proving the entertainment value of a waste of neural capacity.

So I guess it wasnt pointless as far as making some cheddar for the fam. Alrhough the algorithm makes way more for the toob than that kid will ever see.

ZFG, out.

P.S. it is pointless to fight the pointless things in life. I think I am turning into Marvin the paranoid android.

Everything requires certification these days. I feel inadequate. I will make a video of me reciting PI to 200 decimal places or eat too much ice cream. What to do? WHAT TO DO?!

Pi is an irrational number, so no matter how many digits you memorize, it’s never exactly pi…So is e, which is the product of an irrational infinite series…Both numbers are extremely important in math and statistics…

I don’t think non-perverted possibilities are endless in this mature decline, but you be the successful, eternal optimist. You have a son who is well above average by today’s standards and might even have some traditional potential in him, from what I can tell. It’s nice to see a White youth who could be a worthy heir of the civilization we no longer have. Maybe the West will make another come back one day. You must be pleased as a parent.
