Worked one summer at a paper recycling plant. Several lines for wastepaper/newspaper and a single line for corrugated boxes, fed by a long conveyor where trucks would dump the cardboard to be shredded. At the time the 2 nearby auto assembly plants would get large metal parts (fenders, doors, hoods, trunk lids, etc.) from their out of state stamping plants packaged in corrugated and delivered in special rail cars. At the end of the line was an 8′ diameter hammer mill whose drum (with pegs, just like shown above) rotated at a couple hundred RPM. Nothing came out of there larger than about 3″ in size. There was a catwalk above where a worker would use a long bamboo rod to unclog things when a jam was starting to form. If he was unsuccessful the whole line would have to be shut down and the jam would have to be manually cleared by some poor sob who had to climb down into the drum pit. It took a lot of skill to do it just right and he was darn good at it. I think they paid the bamboo guy an extra buck an hour for his skills. The stairway running up to the catwalk was pretty flimsy and I feared for the day when something would go wrong and he’d fall in. Not a good thing to think about when I ate my bologna sandwich for lunch. I’m sure once OSHA was formed they had a hey-day at that plant with all the crazy unsafe shit that went on. One of several real world jobs that convinced me to stay in college and keep my grades up.

My girlfriend’s baby sister goes to UNLV business school. Needless to say It’s been a rough day for us. Luckily she’s okay but it took forever to finally get a call from her because of everything that transpired. Her friend who pushed her out of the way was one of those shot though and is in critical condition. If this was a false flag shooting it’s hitting too damn close to home. I’m as pro second amendment as they come and I ain’t never giving up my guns willingly. Say a prayer for all those involved.
Investigators have now determined that the victims killed were faculty or staff, not students. That suggests to detectives that the rampage may not have been random, but may have been an attack that targeted certain people because of some sort of previous relationship or interactions.
Yes, her friend is stable. It was a shot in the arm. I was wrong about the critical condition.. her sister’s is shock still though. She won’t talk to anyone today. I heard it was mainly professors that were targeted.
