US sporting and outdoor products group Vista Outdoor warned in a letter to customers that ammunition prices are set to surge due to “an anticipated global shortage of gunpowder.”
Vista Outdoor confirmed the authenticity of the letter to Newsweek days ago. The increase of ammo and gunpowder prices is expected on Jan. 1.
“Due to world events our suppliers have notified us of unprecedented demand for and an anticipated global shortage of gunpowder, and thus has increased our prices substantially,” Vice President of Sales, Sporting Products Brett Nelson said in the letter.
Nelson continued, “We must, therefore, raise our pricing to help offset those increases.”
Ammo and powder prices at Remington, Alliant Powder, CCI, Federal, SEVI-Shot, and Speer are set to rise in the coming weeks:
- Shotshell: 1-7 percent
- Rifle: 1-7 percent
- Handgun: 1-5 percent
- 22LR/Shorts: 1-5 percent
- WMR/HMR: 1-7 percent
- Primers: 5 percent
- Alliant Powder: 10 percent (limited availability).
The rise in demand for ammo and gunpowder comes as the Russia-Ukraine war nears the two-year mark while Israel is 1.5 months into a large-scale ground war with Hamas in Gaza.

Such a shortage is easily “arranged”. It’s been done before with a variety of commodities and products. When the price is right, they appear.
I do believe there will be a shortage of civilian ammo in military calibers should the idiots get a war started. That’s obvious. Then, the excuse will be “Dont’cha know there’s a war on…?” (My mother told me of times during WWII when she heard that phrase in grocery stores. The detergent was under the counter or in the back room, and could be brought out for the right price or if one bought enough overpriced stuff one didn’t really need.)
…same way they arranged the coming drug and food shortages.

While there is obviously price gouging going on, from the top on down, this could be more true than many realize. There is but one powder manufacturer left in the US. One. Winchester/Olin, now owned by General Dynamics, in FL. Alliant may possibly still manufacture some of the old Hercules line of flake pistol powders in Radford, VA, but that’s questionable. DuPont long ago sold off their powder making to GenDyn & is now made in Canada. Other than the above, all the powder & ammunition companies buy their powder from Australia, Canada, & Europe, who’s finally building their own military presence against the dreaded Putin. Yeah, I know… fear & war drums make lots of $$ for some.
Primers are another huge bottleneck. All the powder in the world wont do shit without a reliable initiator. Vista owns all but one of the US primer makers… but the goobermint shut down Ma Bell as a monopoly. Imports have been restricted. A few sneak in from Europe & South America now & then. The Czech made ones are reliable but often dont fit as well as they should (SAAMI & CIP have slightly different specs) & reportedly the S.A. ones aren’t totally reliable. There have been rumors of a few smaller independent primer makers starting up, one in TX & one in AL, but nothing much has materialized. Fiocchi is said to be building a plant somewhere in the US. Gub’mint regulations on this type of thing be a bitch.
The Czech guy may be a blessing… or a curse. I’m sure he wants a return on his $$ ASAP, but Vista’s upper management is staying on & there lies the problem I believe. And so it goes.
Not sure about the rest of the world, but it was hard for me to find any of my old Alliant powder stand-bys (Herco, Bullseye, 2400, etc) in recent years. So I expanded my horizons to what was available.
I saw that Vista scare porn last week. All of a sudden, Alliant powders are every where. With a huge price tag.
