THIS DAY IN HISTORY – General Patton relieves Allies at Bastogne – 1944

Via History.com

On December 26, General George S. Patton employs an audacious strategy to relieve the besieged Allied defenders of Bastogne, Belgium, during the brutal Battle of the Bulge.

The capture of Bastogne was one of the key goals of the Battle of the Bulge. Bastogne provided a road junction in rough terrain where few roads existed; it would open up a valuable pathway further north for German expansion. The Belgian town was defended by the U.S. 101st Airborne Division, which had to be reinforced by troops who straggled in from other battlefields.

Food, medical supplies, and other resources eroded as bad weather and relentless German assaults threatened the Americans’ ability to hold out. Nevertheless, Brigadier General Anthony C. MacAuliffe met a German surrender demand with a typewritten response of a single word: “Nuts.”

Enter “Old Blood and Guts,” General Patton. Employing a complex and quick-witted strategy wherein he literally wheeled his 3rd Army a sharp 90 degrees in a counterthrust movement, Patton broke through the German lines and entered Bastogne, relieving the valiant defenders and ultimately pushing the Germans east across the Rhine.

And when Patton arrived, he found my Uncle sitting on a pile of frozen Nazi bodies eating his Christmas dinner. I never got tired of hearing that story! That’s how I first learned the context of “Nuts!”.

At the turn of the 20th century, whites were 30% world population.
After ww1 ww2, the end of the 20th century delivered a world where whites are less than 10% of the population.
I would guess, that continuing to start wars will eventually reduce the number to zero!
Go Team White!

Fucking morons!

The 101st were a bunch of war criminals in Band of Brothers.

They started commiting war crimes in that very first encounter with the germans on the wagon.
A few scenes later they are stealing personal effects off dead germans. Another war crime.
Another scene? They murder a group of German pows.
I’m gonna guess, the movie covered over multitudes of other war crimes, by including the ones they did.
In later scenes, members of the 101st are looting in private residences.

Yeah, that movie showed the uSA was anything but noble in that war.

Fuck you. You get thrown into battle and put through the shit, your sense of moral high ground takes second fiddle to making the perpetrators of misery pay for putting everyone in a position where men have to doing things they’d rather not. War is hell. Fair and nice gets their ass kicked, women raped, and provisions raided. You see your friends that are closer than family get blown away, and your character and moral integrity tends to waver a bit in the midst.
Fucking anonymous judgmental holier than thou wouldn’t have the balls, the courage, or the strength to go through what those men went through.
Especially during one of the coldest winters on record, with no winter clothing, very little food, very little ammunition, and enduring almost non-stop artillery bombardment, where courageous men lost limbs, their sanity, or their lives. Fighting for freedom so dickheads like you are free to speak your mind, with as little experience as one would expect from such a comment.
You wouldn’t have lasted 3 weeks in Georgia where those men trained.
The real men who did what they believe had to be done would have bounced your ass out of there in no time, for failing to make the grade. Who the fuck are you to judge them. You’re nobody. So easy to after the fact condemn other men for their behavior in difficult environments when a world war was raging.

The 101st Airborne literally looted, rape and murdered a path of destruction from France to Germany.

Why not search the local records of the French who hated US troops because they were all raping, murderous animals?

They literally had to beg military command to install brothels to stop all the Americans doing business in the streets with prostitutes.

It turns out that this health concern was not ill-founded, as 1) the use of the (then perfectly legal and institutionalized) French brothel system, 2) occasional prostitution and even 3) rapes all seem to have been quite massive in late 1944, early 1945 ; apparently especially in north-western France, with the expected health (and social) consequences. At least the first 2 were probably to be expected with the massive influx of relatively rich Allied soldiers meeting an impoverished French population who had suffered 4/5 years of occupation. This elicited official protestations from French officials, most notably the mayor of Le Havre, Pierre Voisin. He pleaded for the institution of an official military run brothel in the hope that this would help control 2) and 3), which, he described, was jeopardizing the already very fragile reconstruction of normal society in a city which had just been freed from a difficult occupation and had been heavily bombarded by the Allies. The Army adamantly refused.

“A good plan executed immediately is better than a perfect plan executed tardily (sic).”

Can’t remember Patton’s exact quote, but it’s something like that.

The low overcast kept the Air Corps grounded. When the weather lifted it was all over for the Germans. The Falaise Gap became a highway of death like we saw in Desert Storm.

Patton was an ancient soul, and a true American hero…the Nazi’s ultimately won when he was assassinated by his own government cabal.

We are all proud of America, but can anyone tell me how destroying Germany somehow helped our nation, other than the common courtesy of “F$%# Hitler”?

Thus the ends justify the means. And it no longer matters what the ends were for.
Justice is a trick of the light operated by the judge in the shadows.

Between the West’s Darwinian argument of “You lost, therefore you deserve to continue losing”
And the German Nietzsche argument of “We deserve to win, before we have won”
I would prefer the German’s will to power perspective. Living in desperate violence is better than desperate silence, to my tastes. And the silence is ending BTW.

The brutal reality of WWx went on and on. And the men with silver spoons in hand kept making more silverware.
A excuse for a war is a excuse to squeeze profits from desperate states.

And that was before Operation High Jump. Imagine what he would have said about that had he lived. Pretty obvious why they whacked him.
