Day late…
Heavy is the head that wears the crown.
You mean,something like this?!
Funny that song has never appeared on any Christmas playlist…. If only it was as popular as “White Christmas,” the world might be little better place.
. . . were, not was . . .
Also a day late … but I just came across this a few minutes ago …

If I could have a 5a, 5b, and 5c, they would be:
Ray’s Hammond organ playing on Riders on the Storm is epic.
Think it was a Rhodes keyboard.
That vibrato may have been a Leslie rotating speaker cab, which created tremolo mechanically by what amounted to the Doppler effect.
It was one of the first rock/pop sounds I heard as a boy, having grown up on classical, mostly. In the summer of 1971 is when I first heard that sort of music. Much pop had organ in it then, and all pop was on one station, not segregated.
The Doors’ “Love Her Madly” may well have been the first time I heard that sound, though Aretha, Allman Bros., Beatles, Hendrix, Santana, and others were all on the same stations and used the sound. Having grown up on classical, the frantic tempo and manic shifting from minor to major keys and back in “Love Her Madly” gave me gooseflesh and ripples of adrenaline up my spine. It was a new experience, to say the least.
Later, a music teacher at junior high (middle) school played live with an organ (Farfisa? Hammond?) and a Leslie speaker cab. It was intriguing to see the speaker whirling inside the cabinet and producing tremolo mechanically, not electrically.
Still, nothing compares with this:
That is still the finest version – the one that brought it out of obscurity. Had this man not done this, we may have lost it forever. If it doesn’t touch and move you, you may be dead.
It is instructive that so many rockers and even some modern house DJs (https://www.youtube.com/@CarlRag/videos) have been classically trained. The best pop is still just . . . pop.
I’ve always been a fan of Manzarek’s keyboard artistry. Apparently he played several different keyboard instruments, none of which was a Hammond organ, although many times that is what it sounded like to me.
But this is what caught my eye when I looked it up. Things that make you go hmmmm….
Laurel canyon set up.
Worst band ever
And, for my tastes, their most powerful tune …
Yeah, man. I don’t think Knopfler’s kidding.
.
Abolish the state.
The Man is Too Strong is one of my favorites.
FWIW, Knopfler’s a very nice guy, too. I have his autograph on a snap of a 1976 Ferrari 308. I was working at a now-defunct major-market radio station in the late Eighties, and hadn’t been alerted to his visit. I happened to have a glossy Brit racing magazine in my bag. Knowing he was a racer, and with nothing related to his vocation for him to sign, I didn’t even mention anything like, hey, you’re a rock star, aren’t ya?
I brought out the magazine, he signed the Ferrari pic, and we chatted, like mates at the pub, about how the yuppies were snapping up Ferraris, and stashing them in climate-controlled garages, instead of driving them. He told me to get a Fiat Dino instead – 226 0r 246 – and I let him know the bastards were after those, too – anything for a soulless buck, and no thrill and fun of driving something foolish.
The DJ asked Knopfler when we could expect to see his band tour again, and Knopfler said, yeah, right – and leave my baby twin boys alone for another year? Nice guy. Human. And not bad on guitar and songwriting – and not Pavarotti, but right voice for his gig – like Jimi stealing vocal stardom on “All Along The Watchtower” from Dylan.
Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, John Mayer, and more, all at the same time….
My #1
Lowell George, R.I.P.
NtroP
Lowell George & Linda Ronstadt, – Willin’ – Live 1975 WHFS FM Maryland

Acoustic (except for the mics . . . )
Depends on the day & my mood.
Certainly can’t disagree with those 5 choices.
Another from the same album
One more from a few years earlier.
IMHO this is such a special performance that it is worth a save, even though it is out of the genre for this collection.
