THIS DAY IN HISTORY – St. Bernadette claims to see the Virgin Mary – 1858

Via History.com

In southern France, Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, a 14-year-old French peasant girl, first claims to have seen the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ and a central figure in the Roman Catholic religion. The apparitions, which totaled 18 before the end of the year, occurred in a grotto of a rock promontory near Lourdes, France. Marie explained that the Virgin Mary revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception, asked that a chapel be built on the site of the vision, and told the girl to drink from a fountain in the grotto, which Marie subsequently discovered by digging into the earth.

The concept of the Immaculate Conception, in which the Virgin Mary is regarded free from original sin from the moment of her conception, had been accepted just four years previous by Pope Pius IX. Marie’s claims garnered widespread attention, but skeptical church authorities subjected her to severe examinations and refused to accept her visions. After years of mistreatment at the hands of the authorities and the curious public, she was finally allowed to enter the convent of Notre-Dame de Nevers, where she spent her remaining years in prayer and seclusion. She died of ill heath at the age of 35.

The site of her manifestations subsequently became the most famous modern shrine of the Virgin Mary, and in 1933 Marie-Bernarde Soubirous was canonized as St. Bernadette by the Roman Catholic Church. Today, millions travel to Lourdes every year to visit St. Bernadette’s grotto, whose waters supposedly have curative powers.

Being delusional is a common human trait. Just look at the democrat supporters, they think Biden is not a demented old fool. At least visions of dead people are less harmful.

Sounds like the same folks who’ve said that Hildegard von Bingen’s spiritual visions were just migraine headaches … I believe it was Oliver Sacks who poo-hoo’d things …

The virgin birth.

That is all one needs to know about christiandom.

Even The Holy Ghost was singing “It wasn’t me”

That is a good one though.

Betrothed: “You’re pregnant? We haven’t consummated the marriage yet”

Mary “God knocked me up!”

Betrothed “Oh hell no!”

Betrothed drags her down to the synagogue, makes his case, the Priest passes judgment and Mary gets introduced to being stoned.

Virgin birth scenarios aren’t unheard of in spiritual circles … even the great mystic, Kabir, was thought by some to have been the product of such an event.

In any event, though, it’s not the stuff to create a ‘religion’ or spiritual path …

If it really did happen it’s very unfortunate the catholics got hold of her. She was supposed to have been told 3 super (for lack of a better word) events that would occur. They were supposed to have been revealed at certain times but the pope got hold of her. Never did hear what those secretes were supposed to be. One was probably that all popes are anti-christs.

Wrong. Three secrets are associated with Our Lady of Fatima, 1917 Portugal – not with Our Lady of Lourdes. You’re obviously on the internet. Why don’t you look up those secrets?

The belief in Immaculate Conception and in the Virgin Birth of Christ are as old as the Church. They are absolutely not something new, not something “accepted four years prior.”

It is completely appropriate that Christ took flesh from a sinless woman, untouched by Satan. He is the new Adam, and just as Adam was taken from the pure earth, so Christ was formed from a pure source.

Jesus Christ, as God, has the power to create the creature that would eventually bear Him. Why would He do otherwise?

As an aside, I’ve never understood the tendency for protestants to insult Our Lady. This is Christ’s mother*. There is no greater ruler in all of existence. He authored the 4th commandment. Is it really wise to go around saying His mother wears combat boots?

*Yes, Mary is the Mother of God. When the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity took upon Himself human nature, he took the whole package. He could do anything a human could, including conception with all that entails, being born, eating, drinking, talking, defecating, feeling pain, and dying. Mary did not pre-exist Our Lord, but she did give birth to Him, and will be His Mother for all eternity.
