Okay, general question to all the FF regulars. I know lots of you are retired, so please explain why on earth you are up at 7AM to post here?? Since I retired, my typical rising time is about 9:30-10AM. Nothing going on in the world before then that I need to see.

One Man's Perspective
One Man's Perspective
  Retirednottired
February 16, 2024 4:37 pm

I wake up at odd hours sometimes and if I can’t doze back off, I get up, get moving, and do something; anything around the house, regardless of the hour. Sometimes just to stretch the muscles, as that helps ward off some aches and pains, if done on a regular basis.

In younger years, when I had to hear the alarm clock go off to start a work day,
that sleep loss concern caused anxiety, on the fear I’d hit the wall mid-day on the job. Diet played a role in that, as well.

After eating a meal, I often get drowzy, and I eat rather healthy.

The beauty of retirement from my viewpoint is, not being a slave to alarm clock or the time of day, and relief from morning daily obligations anymore.
Another bonus is to take a nap at home, anytime, if the drowzies hit.
If that causes erratic sleep patterns during the night, it doesn’t bother me as much as it used to. I’m blessed to be able to do that in my mid 60’s.

As for restless night time sleep, another possible cause if saturating the brain with web browsing in the hours before bed time. Guilty as suggested.
Dreams are all over the board, too, and rarely make sense. No rhyme or reason.

I don’t worry too much about it. Quite content, in almost any personal situation I find myself in, after walking away from corporate toxicity and greed, and having the freedom to work when I want, on whatever I want, or
occupy my time with physical activities I enjoy.

If laziness starts creeping in, I try to find some kind of improvement to do around the house. The list never ends of those kinds of opportunities.
If nothing else, going through all the stuff I’ve accumulated through the years, to purge / donate / sell / give away things that may hold some value for someone that could use it more than me.

I can see why some retirees die shortly after they quit a career of working.
I still like working, but on a less demanding schedule.
And admittedly, the danger of becoming a lethargic couch potato is not good.
Motion is lotion. Use it or lose it applies. To our brain, our muscles and our bones. Lungs, too. Fresh air is crucial.

Like mark, I’ve become a fan of periodic saunas or steam rooms, to sweat out
any potential toxins ingested via breathing polluted air, drinking liquids with hidden or unknown chemical additives, eating food with similar, or taking any pharmaceuticals, even if they help a condition.

I read somewhere that our perspiratory system and respiratory systems are critical, for the volume of waste elimination from the body. Moreso that our digestive system’s lower intestine, and our kidney blood filtering miracles that deposit liquid waste into increasingly weaker bladders and prostates as men age.

It was supposed to get easier, or so I thought. Still; happier now.
With age comes experience.
One doesn’t grow old by doing repetitive, foolish, or neglectful things.
Nowadays, it’s been proven that a healthy diet intake and regular exercise, along with fulfilling activities and social life will keep you out of the Doctor’s offices, both physical and mental, and keep you out of the hospital except those with chronic conditions, sometimes not always their own fault.
Some folks get dealt a shitty hand. Play it the best way you know how, I suggest.

Them’s my 2 cents.

The CIA assassinated the Kennedys.

The Western economy is one giant Ponzi scheme.

Epstein was the face of a CIA/Mossad operation that to this day blackmails Western politicians to do their bidding.

Justin Trudeau doesn’t have a dick, and he’s Castro’s son.

The Democrats brazenly stole the 2020 and 2022 elections and are setting up to repeat the crime this year.

Biolabs in Ukraine were specialists in creating pandemics.

The covid pandemic was a means to siphon power and trillions of dollars from the workers to the parasite class and to control any blowback.

The USA, with help from Norway and the UK, blew up Nord Stream. Germany’s sackless leaders just let it happen.

One of the few signs that Western humour still exists is Friday Fail.

They don’t raid the “Social Security Trust Fund.” From the beginning, the Social Security Administration is required by law to buy a special Treasury Bond with any funds left over after expenditures. Therefore, by design, the money paid into Social Security by today’s “investors” are used to pay previous “investors.” That is the very definition of a Ponzi scheme. “A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud that pays existing investors with funds collected from new investors.” If any of us tried what the US government is doing they would put us in jail.

Sorry, we are not “owed” Social Security.

From: https://www.cato.org/commentary/there-right-social-security

“Ephram Nestor was a Bulgarian immigrant who came to the United States in 1918 and paid Social Security taxes from 1936, the year the system began operating, until he retired in 1955. A year after he retired, Nestor was deported for having been a member of the Communist Party in the 1930s. In 1954 Congress had passed a law saying that any person deported from the United States should lose his Social Security benefits. Accordingly, Nestor’s $55.60 per month Social Security checks were stopped. Nestor sued, claiming that because he had paid Social Security taxes, he had a right to Social Security benefits.

The Supreme Court disagreed, saying “To engraft upon the Social Security system a concept of ‘accrued property rights’ would deprive it of the flexibility and boldness in adjustment to ever changing conditions which it demands.” The Court went on to say, “It is apparent that the non‐contractual interest of an employee covered by the [Social Security] Act cannot be soundly analogized to that of the holder of an annuity, whose right to benefits is bottomed on his contractual premium payments.”

The Court’s decision was not surprising. In an earlier case, Helvering v. Davis (1937), the Court had ruled that Social Security was not a contributory insurance program, saying, “The proceeds of both the employee and employer taxes are to be paid into the Treasury like any other internal revenue generally, and are not earmarked in any way.”

In other words, Social Security is not an insurance program at all. It is simply a payroll tax on one side and a welfare program on the other. Your Social Security benefits are always subject to the whim of 535 politicians in Washington. Congress has cut Social Security benefits in the past and is likely to do so in the future. In fact, given Social Security’s financial crisis, benefit cuts are almost inevitable. Several proposals to cut benefits, from increasing the retirement age to means testing, are already being debated.”

I took mine as soon as I could at 62. I never understand people that say they are going to wait more years so they can get a couple hundred more a month. The government does that cause they hope and constantly try to have you die before then. The amount of money you get taking it early adds up quickly and surpasses the little extra you may get a month if you wait. Never wait on money from the government. They may decide not to give it to you at all.

I haven’t checked in a while, but when I researched Social Security for some college papers 20 years ago there were about 6 workers for each person drawing SS. Projections were there would be 2 workers for every person drawing SS by something like 2040. When I read that I realized SS was not sustainable and the generations working at that time would probably refuse to pay in.

Needless to say, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to supplement my retirement income (if I’m even able to retire).

Edit for spelling.

I’ve done the same, and haven’t regretted it a bit.
Since began 2 years ago, I’ve seen 2 COLA bumps the last 2 January’s,
for a reasonably modest raise. My logic was, with as much as they took from my gross earnings in 5 years of labor and wages, I’m going to try and milk some of it back for as long as possible, starting as early as possible, because they way these idiots print, and refuse to cut spending,
I believe we are throttling full steam ahead toward a cliff and over it,
plunging into hyperinflation, ultimately.
Nice thing about drawing SS benefit checks, you can still work a PT job and earn up to almost 20k, before the Feds penalize you and demand some of the SS funds back. So, combined with a frugal mindset, the income has been enough to not have to yet tap into self funded IRA, and SEP account holdings, or liquify other assets to pay the bills.
A 401k was liquidated and rolled over into a more stable preservation of principal, at the sacrifice of growth in the fund.
If the gov gets desperate and goes after bank savings, 401k funds of private citizens, then the end of social order will be closer, and blood will run thicker in the streets, with hyperinflation causing all kinds of mayhem. That scenario doesn’t seem too far down the road, speculating with all the dark storm clouds on the horizon. I’m concentrating on simple pleasures, living within my means, but finding more fun and relaxation, instead of working harder to chase more taxable income.
I figure to get as much enjoyment as possible, as soon as possible, since
we have no idea how much more freedom and financial independence will be allowed, and not stolen away by uncontrollable, greedy thieves.

Exactly. I spent three decades as a consultant evaluating public policies, a field I was trained for at a top US grad school (when that meant something), and, being retired, I was able to spend hundreds of hours educating myself about covid. Still, practically all my friends and family dismissed my views on the public policy responses to covid, because, in their view, the government and corporate media would never lie about something so important.

Well…
. . . I’ve spent 1/3 of my life each in Norway, USA & UK.

Not an ideal situation – at this point no matter which of those countries I’m in, I’m not considered native. But my heart belonged to Norway all my life. When it was time to decide where to spend the rest of my days it was a simple choice – though it’s not worked out quite as well as it would’ve had I moved back home about 10 years sooner.

And that’s all I’ll divulge on-line in one go for now.
