I’ve had two family members in the past year opt for natural burial.. one in a simple shroud and another using a plain pine box. Cheap and all-natural. This is becoming a thing again.

Seems like somewhere along the line I was told that one reason for embalming is because in the old days the dead would come back. That is they would find a lot of people, for whatever reason they were being uninterred, were found not to have really been dead. So it was back in the day a way to make sure they were really dead, because waking up in a casket is probably not a good way to wake up.
