I never thought he or his show was funny … just phony, self-styled NYC ‘intellectuals’ glad handing each other.
Now — the original ‘Honeymooners’ and George Carlin and Red Skelton — they were genuinely funny … and nothing they did centered around NYC and the self-styled ‘intellectuals’ that lived there.
Seinfeld may not be my cup of tea, but he is obviously a smart comic and he knows where the jokes are in an idea and can wring them out of almost anything. And he’s right that you’ve got to be smart enough to know how to “make the gates” with an audience.
What he misses and what really underpins his frustration is that some people aren’t going to see a comic to laugh and have a good time, they are going to find something to be outraged over. I’m not saying it’s a legitimate motive, but it is certainly a present reality and you’ve got to expect that these days.
I always saw Larry David and Seinfeld as dangerous and arrogant, not funny. Underline that on Larry David. Comedy was destroyed a long time ago when it was completely commandeered by the club.

Jerry is getting a lot of press because he has a new movie to sell which from what little I saw looks like a capitol B, B O M B. I’ll wait for the reviews.
