This post has been a long time developing. Back during the #MeToo pogroms, and the pink pussy hats, and the screeching on Capitol Hill, and the Stalin-esque career-killing accusations and the disappeared men, I wanted badly to write something titled “Why Are Women so Angry?”—for watching #MeToo had been like watching the spread of a contagion, a mind virus, to use Elon Musk’s term, and a contagion that was spliting society further into two camps.
There is certainly a growing political divide between men and women. Women are more likely to be left-wing and in so far as left wing is crazy….
Now, rampaging leftism will certainly get you to crazy pretty fast, but it’s this quality of crazy even among women who aren’t overtly political: The quality is there in the blowsy thirty-something woman in the unflattering bike shorts and crop top doing an illegal climb to the top of a fragile Mayan pyramid in the Mexican jungle, where she does a bawdy dance (Instagram, don’t you know.) It’s the much older women having affairs with teenaged boys and then filming themselves (Trigger Warning! This is an actual YouTube genre) making out with much younger men, even boys. It’s the flagrancy, the exhibitionism, the unhingedness we saw so often during the Gaza Encampments among the women who often seemed to be leading the crusades and who, so often, just seemed to be using “Gaza genocide” as an excuse to get hysterical.
There are actually good reasons (not excuses, reasons) why Bat Shit Crazy contagion should be at peak right about now:

Is all of this a recipe for civil war? Probably not.
People who throw around the notion of an incipient civil war seem to forget that wars still depend on a huge supply of young men, fit and motivated enough for that “bitter arithmetic” and, what with very real testosterone deficits among men these days, we barely have enough sufficiently aggressive men to fill our regular army.
So we may not see civil war (at least along these lines) any time soon, but we can expect lots more Bat Shit Crazy before a new CINC can help restore sanity.
I must beg to differ with that last; it is NOT up to any CiNC, new or old, to help restore sanity, nor should we be looking for one to do it for us. The mindset that reflexively looks to FederalGovCo for the solution to every problem great or small is a major factor in how we got ourselves into this mess in the first damned place.

the original articles of confederation didnt really allow the center any powers of taxation , or any means of compulsion (no courts for example). during the revolution we largely did get the best men in our society rising to the occasion and they remained largely above the kind of bickering and posturing and internal struggles for power which almost always lead towards more and more rules being put in place.. well once we were securely free we lost that sense of unity and pretty soon you had different states acting, well, like independent states… you also had england not quite willing to let go even though they lost and formally agreed to let go, you also had trouble stirring up with e.g. tax revolts in a number of states (and put down harshly in some cases)..
and generally speaking you had all the aftermath of a decade of war and living in a state of emergency, and things were liable to go all over the place.. at a broader level of consciousness you might say that there was bound to be _some_ kind of big huff before things settled down.. and then finally stepping into the scene you had people like hamilton and his banker cronies who were hell-bent on getting their pound of flesh out of revolutionary war debts. the only mechanism they could envision to compel states to pay anything back (the states had issued enormous quantities of almost worthless debt as well as enormous quantities of almost worthless paper currency) was a binding contract with something central. all of this together had a lot of people wanting to settle something more formal and all-encompassing than the original articles, though many had very different ideas of what that was going to be. what resulted from all of that was a compromise, and in honesty the first 50 years of that compromise held up reasonably well. i doubt we would do much better if we were in their shoes.
yes, it did get corrupted later. is it recoverable? the ideas are.. with hindsight we could make a few minor improvements (probably it was a bad idea to allow the fed govt to issue its own debt for example, and somehow the fed govt slipped out from under the ‘no state shall..make any other thing than gold or silver coin a money..’ too.. that applied to states but not to the union of the states?
if they would have had bastiat a few decades earlier they probably would have incorporated more of his clearer thinking on the matter of ‘the governments powers are derived from the people, therefore, the ogvernment can only ever possess powers which, having been given by the people, were powers which the people themselves also legitimately possessed to be able to confer them’ , and match that logic up with the enumerated powers to make it even more clear that if you or i can’t do it, then the government could never have gotten from us the power to do it either.
perhaps we’ll refine it the next time around, if it doesnt get blown all to pieces in the meantime.
