Our successor to This Week in the Guardian, This Week in the New Normal is our weekly chart of the progress of autocracy, authoritarianism and economic restructuring around the world.

1. Natwest to pay for hormone replacement therapy

UK bank NatWest announced this week that in the future they would be paying for any of their employees who identify as transgender to receive hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

They join Goldman Sachs who, a couple of years ago, said they would pay for their employees to have gender reassignment surgery.

There is a tidal wave of “woke” gestures sweeping through the world’s biggest corporations.

After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade earlier this year, Disney and Amazon and other mega-companies announced they would pay the travel expenses of any employee who needed to cross state lines to get an abortion.

NatWest has also started requiring their staff to wear “pronoun badges” to prevent “accidental misgendering”, and another British bank, Halifax, is doing the same, and invites anyone who disagrees with the policy to close their account.

1. Gun control back in the news

America has been a dangerous place this past month – even more so than usual.

A couple of weeks ago we had the Buffalo shooting, where a young man allegedly stormed into a supermarket and shot several patrons in the name of “protecting the white race”. Apparently, there was a manifesto.

US Confirms Monkeypox Virus In Massachusetts After UK, Spain, Portugal Cases In Men

A single case of the rare but serious monkeypox virus has been confirmed in Massachusetts in a man. Recent cases in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal have been linked to men who have sex with other men.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the U.S. case on Wednesday, after initial testing completed late Tuesday at the State Public Health Laboratory in Jamaica Plain.

The man poses no risk to the public and is in hospital in good condition, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) said in its release.

Contact tracing efforts are underway between Massachusetts DPH, the CDC, relevant local health officials, and the man’s health care providers.

The United Kingdom has confirmed nine cases of monkeypox since early May. The first of these cases had recently traveled to Nigeria. None of the other cases reported recent travel.
