So much for funny Friday. I woke up to the news below. A crazed gunman methodically and systematically slaughtered 14 young people and wounded 50 others at the midnight opening of The Dark Knight Rises. He had multiple weapons and used tear gas to disorient his victims before murdering them. It was clear that he planned this well in advance. The authorities have not released his name or any details about his motive. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess his background. I bet he is a 20 year old white guy. We will find out he was a loner in high school. He never had a girlfriend and had few or no friends. His parents are probably divorced. He doesn’t have a job. He’s felt alienated from society and has been living in a fantasy world for years. Somebody probably assessed his mental state within the last two years and concluded he was a danger to himself and others, but the system did nothing. In retrospect, there will be a list of clear signs that he would eventually go off, but no one wanted to get involved.
I think his choice of this movie was purposeful. He didn’t choose Hangover 2. He chose a movie about alienation, pain, societal collapse and darkness. This was done as a statement about our increasingly degenerative society. People communicate on electronic devices. We hole up in our houses or apartments, cut off from human contact. There are evil villians sucking the last vestiges of wealth from the lowly serfs. The anger, pain and disillusion are palpable throughout society. People are confused. They can’t figure out the enemy. Government can’t protect you. Government is the main reason for this alienation. The kneejerk reaction of the liberal dogooders will be to ban guns, as if guns caused this slaughter. Banning guns will not stop the slow methodical decline of our society. It is much larger than guns. It is our entire culture. Materialism, greed, selfishness, profit at any cost, isolation, lack of personal responsibility, and delusional willfull ignorance have overwhelmed our country.
Fourth Turnings always reach a climax when those on the perceived side of good have a final showdown with the perceived side of evil. We are likely a few years from this showdown, but there is no guarantee that good will vanquish evil. A revolution is on the horizon. Everyone will need to choose sides. There will be no one allowed to stand on the sidelines.

ABC draws possible Tea Party connection with alleged Aurora shooter

ABC News has suggested that James Holmes — the suspect in today’s shooting in Aurora, Colorado — may have a connection to the Tea Party.
ABC’s Brian Ross reported this morning that there is “a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site… talking about him joining the Tea Party last year.”
“Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes,” Ross cautioned “but it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.”
ABC News is the only network or cable news channel to suggest a possible Tea Party connection, according to a survey of the TV Eyes database at 9:30 a.m. ET, though they did not verify that the two individuals were one and the same. (This is the Tea Party Patriots page on which Ross based his report.)
The report has already set off alarm bells on the right. At Brietbart.com, the conservative news site, Joel Pollak has accused ABC News of “scapegoating.”
“How interesting that Ross and ABC News should think to look to the Tea Party website first–and to broadcast politically volatile information without verifying if that ‘Jim Holmes’ is the same as the suspect,” Pollak writes. “Look for more scapegoating from the mainstream media and the Democrats in the hours and days to follow.”

Police say apartment of lone wolf killer James Holmes, 24, is booby-trapped as his mother says ‘you’ve got the right man’

..Police have revealed that the apartment of the man suspected of shooting dead at least 12 people and wounding 50 others during a late-night screening of the new Batman movie is booby-trapped.
James Holmes, 24, told officers he had explosives stored at his home when he was arrested after opening fire at random at the mall in Aurora, Colorado.
A San Diego woman, who identified herself as Holmes’ mother, said that her gut instinct told her that her son was responsible for what has become the state’s worst mass shooting since Columbine.
‘You have the right person,’ she told ABC. ‘I need to call the police… I need to fly out to Colorado.’
Police said they were forced to evacuate Holmes’ apartment, situated four miles from the scene of the horrific crime in North Aurora, and five surrounding buildings.
Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates says bomb technicians are determining how to disarm flammable or explosive material in the third-floor apartment. He says police could be there some time.
Oates says pictures from inside the apartment are fairly disturbing and the devices look to be sophisticated.
FBI agents and police used a hook and ladder fire truck to reach inside the building, footage from the scene revealed.
They put a camera at the end of 12-foot pole inside the apartment and were watching footage this morning of what the camera saw on a small television screen.
Television video showed an officer in a helmet and vest atop the fire truck boom smashing the window of the third-floor apartment where the 24-year-old lives.
A law enforcement source told CBS that police saw what looked like ‘buckets of extra ammunition’ and some kind of chemical inside his home.
Residents told how they heard a small explosion as a police robot entered the booby-trapped apartment.
Holmes is believed to be a white American with no previous record other than a traffic ticket.
Police said Holmes, who has never served in the army, operated on his own.
He is in police custody and the FBI says there is no indication that incident is tied to any terrorist groups.

I don’t know much about this Batman movie but some news story said “Bain” in the movie wore a gas mask and body armor. Does this theater shooting recreate or echo some scene from the movie?
And yes, Jim’s forecasts seem to be right on so far. One story seemed to indicate that the shooter’s mother was married to and living with his father, so that would be one discrepancy. I think the Columbine shooters had married/together parents as well though, so maybe that isn’t relevant or at least not predictive.

Yeah, I’d chalk it up more to the latter two than the former two. There is no data supporting the hypothesis that violent video games and movies cause higher rates of violence.
Psychiatric drugs make people more like to turn violent (either by taking them, or when they can’t handle reality when the drugs are removed or they forget to take them.)
Military training means they do more damage when they actually do self-destruct.

James Holmes most probably is Paranoid SZ. He probably was able to hide his illness or it wasn’t developed fully during medical school-but probably kept him from getting a residency-so he applied for a PhD at Colorado-got in and became sicker-was in the process of withdrawal and the paranoia got the best of him as he continued to feel everyone was against him and he decided to fight back.
He has probably been a loner his whole life, when interacting probably grandiose in thinking and not liked by many folks. He becomes further isolated, feelings of paranoia increase until he feels he cannot do anything but fight back. This is a failure of his parents to try and care for him (he is an adult and this is VERY tough on families). This is a possible failure of the schools he attended-failure to recognize and alert officials to his illness-any tough problem as you cannot arrest someone for being mentally ill nor can you easily force them into treatment. This is such a tragedy and likely to happen again and again until we change our treatment of mental health system of treatment. Sad but true.
As a nurse, I have seen this over and over again. It is truly a black hole that feels really hopeless.

Movie-going may never be the same.
Since the days of silent and black and white films, theaters have always been a place for Americans to escape – from economic downturns, the stresses of war, and even from the heat.
But the tragic shooting at a movie theater outside Denver early Friday morning may forever change the carefree way movie fans buy buckets of popcorn and pick their seats. The shooter who opened fire on a theater packed with avid Batman fans took advantage of excitement for high-octane special effects to delay the reaction to his horrific actions.
Now theaters, security teams, and police departments are trying to respond to help Americans feel safe in the theaters where they’ve always been able to go for a respite from reality.
The New York Police Department announced that it will post officers at theaters throughout the city showing “Dark Knight Rises,” “as a precaution against copycats,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. We’ve already spotted security guards outside the nearby Universal City AMC theater, where fans lined up for the 6:40 a.m. screening.

Tea Party Patriots respond to incorrect report about its member after Colorado shooting

The Colorado Tea Party Patriots responded Friday to an incorrect on-air report by ABC News that implicated one of the political group’s members as the man who opened fire inside a crowded movie in Aurora, Colorado.
On Friday morning, ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross suggested that James Holmes, 52, a member of the group, could be the shooter.
“There’s a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year,” Ross said on ‘Good Morning America.’ “Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.”
The suspect, who is now in custody, is a 24-year-old with the same name.
In a joint statement, Colorado Tea Party Patriots and the Tea Party Patriots denounced the report as “shameless and reprehensible.”
The Colorado Tea Party Patriots and the Tea Party Patriots are saddened to hear of the death and wounding of theater goers in Aurora, Colorado. The member of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots, Jim Holmes, age 52 is not the same person who has been identified as the shooter.
The attempts of some media organizations to characterize the shooter as a Tea Party member without having made any effort to contact our organization are shameless and reprehensible.
We’ll never know what propelled this sicko to do what he did. All we’ll find out is what the psychiatrists “say what they think” about why he did it.
It wouldn’t surprise me to find out thay half (or more) of the people in the theater thought the whole thing was a gag run by the theater to up the “Oh Wow!” element to the imaginary virtual “thrill” of that “virtual violence” right up until someone sitting next to them (or they them self) got shot.
Just another step in virtual violence slipping over into the real world channeled through the warped mind of sick human being. There is nothing – nothing – that will protect you from these very rare happenings except action you take yourself. From carrying weapons (and knowing how to use them very well) to running like Hell – you have to do it. The cops will show up ten or twenty minutes later and do their best to figure out what happened BUT THEY CAN’T PROTECT YOU IN ANY SITUATION. At home or in a movie or on a school campus, cops have no ability to protect you. Believe it.
