The Hubble Space Telescope just revealed the deepest view of the universe ever seen – and it relied on a traffic jam of galaxies to do it.
The new image (right) is the first in a series of “Frontier Field” images, which take advantage of an effect called gravitational lensing to peer further into the universe than ever before. Gravitational lensing happens when huge collections of matter – such as those found in galaxy clusters – warp the space-time around them so that the light from objects behind the clusters takes a curved path. These galaxy clusters can act as cosmic magnifying glasses, bringing objects into focus that would otherwise be too faint and distant to see.

I do love these Hubble images. Look at that sharply defined galaxy just below and left of center. It’s the face on barred spiral with the blue halo of young stars around it. There is a star with spikes to its immediate lower left. Many galaxies are sort of hum drum in appearance but that one is magnificent!

The universe is a marvelously fantastic mystery … the depths of which I can hardly even begin to understand.
But, you understand it all with your simple formula; “God did it”.

I don’t think either the evolutionists, which doesnt mean always mean atheist, or the creationists, which doesnt always mean religious, can ever win the argument of what happened in that first millisecond of what caused nothing to come into something.

Hope, APOD rocks. It’s been my homepage for about 15 years now. Regarding your comment “It goes on Forever” is not quite right. If you read the text, by using the enormous gravity of the foreground galaxy cluster as a lens, that image is looking about 12 billion years into the past. The universe is believed to be about 13 billion years old so in effect, the big bang itself only occurred about a billion years earlier.
I encourage Hope and others to look into attending a local Star Party. Hope in particular has an excellent, annual star party under very dark skies in Texas.
If you consider attending, please read the ettiquete info as astronomers don’t like having their night vision or dark sky imaging efforts ruined. There are some excellent dark sky star parties held all over the US and every amateur I know is always eager to share their knowledge and personal telescopes with the public.
Anyone interested in learning more about astronomy just let me know. The subject is one of my passions in life.

Kill Bill: “Jesus…never died, by the Christian belief”. Not quite. To a Christian, death is the separation of the eternal, undying soul from the body. As such, Jesus died, despite his resurrection. Christians don’t believe in annihilation of the soul, so saying that “God (the Son) died” is not the same as saying God ceased to exist. Muslims’ mistaking Christian belief in God dying as meaning God was annihilated is the main reason they took the Nestorian bifurcation of Christ to the next level and said Jesus wasn’t even crucified. Couldn’t get their heads around it.

Zara, look at it this way………picture a small balloon with black dots all over it. We are inside this balloon. Blow up the balloon a tiny bit and watch what happens to the dots. Do that repeatedly and that is more or less how it works. There is no other direction. Since everything has been expanding outward from inside of that infintesimally small point, and we are inside the bubble of the universe, the view is the same in every direction. From our point of view inside the “balloon”, there is no “outside”. Current theory says this will continue forever. There are theories of multiple universes but not much proof that I am aware of.
It will likely never be known how or why the big bang happened but every single bit of energy in the entire universe was created at the instant of the big bang. Everything that has happened since that event has just been one type of energy conversion into another like hydrogen fusing into helium etc.
I’m sure you already know that light years are a measurement of distance, not time. Light travels at 180,000 miles per second. We can measure the red shift of light coming from very distant objects with great accuracy and that is how we know how “old” or distant a particular object is. We literally look at how old the light is.
