FATTY FATWA

Should the government get involved in what we eat? Obesity is a crushing problem, costing hundredS of billions in medical costs, millions of gallons of extra gas used, millions of hours of work lost due to obesity.

People can’t seem to stop shoveling food into their pieholes, becoming so obese they can’t even walk anymore. Should religion get involved, and start a “war on gluttony”? Gluttony is, after all, one of the seven deadly sins.

The Saudis have taken action.

Saudi Cleric Issues Fatwa Against All-You-Can-Eat Buffets

By Kabita Maharana March 14, 2014

A Saudi cleric named Saleh al-Fawzan has issued fatwa against all-you-can-eat buffets in Saudi Arabia. He made the statement on a Saudi Quranic TV station.

Fawzan said the value and quantity of the food sold should be pre-determined before hand.

“Whoever enters the buffet and eats for 10 or 50 riyals without deciding the quantity they will eat is violating Sharia (Islamic) law,” Fawzan was quoted on al-Atheer channel.

The fatwa attempts to add plate piling eateries to the long list of things outlawed by religious edicts. It has been the subject of condemnation and debate on social media channels.

While some twitter users slammed the cleric’s fatwa by using the hashtag “prohibiting-open-buffet” (in Arabic) others tweeted supporting it.

Here are some reactions for the fatwa against all-you-can-eat Buffets.

Should the government get involved in the war on obesity? Even so, it’s too late for baby boomers, the most obese generation in the history of mankind….

ifn the US has a war on obesity as effective as the war on drugs or poverty, no one will even be able to fit through their front door in 18 months.

I was banned from Raw Story for suggesting that people that can’t control what they put in their mouths have no business being allowed in the voting booth. After all, their very appearance demonstrates their inability to deal with reality. Frankly, a person that can not make the connection between what they shovel into their pie holes and how it turns them into a grotesque blubber farm can not be trusted to choose our leaders.

I see no issue with a BMI test and, as a bonus, it would remove most Baby Boomers from the decision making process.

Why is it that every time something outrages us we automatically call for the govt to do something via regulation. I’m all for more rules as long as govt in NEVER fucking involved! If insurance companies want to institute a BMI test fine but govt should never have a fucking say in it.

You want govt involved in your food or life? (more than they are now?) Wah! Don’t infringe MY liberty but hey……go get those fat fucks and DO something about it!

Fuck me! We so deserve what we get.

This is just another tremendously good example of why I’m an atheist!

All religions have their basis in some “holy roller” centuries ago who is supposedly guided from some mysterious “higher power” (I guess the same one who cures drug abuse or alcoholism!!). Somehow the miracles always happen a few hundred years beyond anyones’ memory of it but the rules of the game can be changed anytime depending on who’s steering the religious ship.

Besides, the word “fatwa” is a hilarious word that reminds me of an obese baby crying his eyes out because he can’t have another bite of dessert.

God calls what you have as a debased mind or a fools mind .Fool in biblical terms does not mean
Stupid. It means you are corrupt to the core.
The fool has said in his heart …there is no God.They are corrupt. They have done abominable works..psalms 14:1…this is GOD’S JUDGMENT OF YOU not my judgment.

What are the foods that the government is saying will kill us today? The things that were fine a few years ago. What foods are good for us? The stuff that was killing us years a few years ago. How about the government just stop telling us what is healthy and focus on what is actually in the food we buy?

The people that game me the thumbs down must be fatties. Confess fatties, confess!!

In this country there is no means test other than being 18 and able to fog a mirror to be eligible to vote. Sure sure some states will not allow you to vote if you are a convicted felon or adjudicated insane but that is fractional compared to the fatties out there.

Someone that is obese does not make rational decisions so why do we allow them to choose our leaders?

Finally, I know that a lot of TBP’ers are waiting for collapse. Do you think the fatties have any chance what-so-ever of surviving that? The first time that they need to sprint a few hundred yards to safety will prove me correct.

Now lets see if you guys respond like the socialists over at Raw Story.

This is a pet peeve of mine. When I was much younger, I didn’t care about this because I played 3 sports and was always active plus my metabolism kept the pounds off.

But now that I’m older and don’t have healthcare (I have been out of work for FAR too long), I was forced years ago to look after my own health. I don’t receive a monthly government subsidy of any kind. I decided to act and got back into biking and ride about 2500 miles a season (serious road bikers average about 7,000).

My focus is to do what’s necessary regarding diet and moderate exercise to keep myself healthy. I would do this even if I was working and had health insurance because it’s right. Too many who have health insurance simply eat whatever they want believing the healthcare system and those who pay into it will take care of them. In my opinion, anyone (other than those who have preexisting conditions) who doesn’t take care of themselves with a healthy diet (no need to be a vegetarian) and moderate exercise should not be allowed to put enormous financial pressure on our healthcare system – period. Why should everyone else be forced to subsidize people’s laziness and irresponsibility? If I were working and paying into the system, I would be even more angry about this. It’s about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!

I don’t like government involvement in almost anything. But those who refuse to take care of themselves should pay far higher rates for healthcare coverage than those who make the effort. Measuring this is the key. If many still refuse to do what’s necessary to improve their health and either can’t or won’t pay the cost, they should receive no coverage at all.

To many this may seem absolutely heartless but personal irresponsibility should NEVER be subsidized. This to a large degree (in addition to HMO greed, etc.) only makes healthcare costs far too expensive for everyone else.

A friend of mine works as a volunteer at our local hospital. “Jackson,” he says, “You can’t believe how many grossly overweight patients I see there.”

Imagine being an anesthesiologist having to sedate out-of-breath fat blobs and having to keep the mouth breathers alive while they’re being operated on. Or worse, imagine being a surgeon whose arms might not be long enough to get through a mountainous jelly belly to repair a hernia or intestional malfunction for a piehole stuffer, like shown in AWD’s first People of WalMart photo in his post.

Administrator says that food prices are jumping, as we all can see. Maybe that’s not such a bad thing. If the sick call crowd couldn’t afford more than oatmeal and celery, they might be better off with less and fewer calories.

I don’t think regulating what people eat would work, it never does. What CAN be done is education (you’d be surprised what people think is a NORMAL portion) and incentives. If you are 10% or more over your ideal body weight your copays for your drugs gets higher. Over 20% even more. Over 30% and you pay full price.

I’m horrified at how fat some of the people I work with are; particularly young women. Several are around 250-300 pounds. One looks like Jabba the Hut, as if someone poured her into a chair. All day long she’s shoveling food into her mouth, mostly chips and candy. Literally just about constantly. The others have a hugest size Starbucks frozen Frappuccino at least once a day-that’s like 1000 calories right there not to mention the sugar content. Yes, it really IS what you’re eating. I have been LOSING weight since I started.

In all seriousness, I’ll tell you why people over eat: They are not satisfied. Not satisfied with their jobs, the government, their never ending debt, their small lives commuting to a job everyday where 70% of them say it sucks.

Since they have no satisfaction, food is their drug – and it’s never enough!

For quite some time I’ve suspected there is something wrong with the food in this country. For the last decade or more I’ve been slowly eliminating many foods and ingredients from my diet. Much of this is based on scholarly articles I read, conclusions of others and medical papers and journals. Recently there was a poster here who was talking about the HAARP “conspiracy theories” and he posted a link to a video by a doctor/professor from UCLA who was making a reasoned case against high fructose corn syrup. (HFCS)

From what I understand HFCS is just as hard on your body as alcohol but HFCS does not provide the same high as alcohol. It does however create havoc for your liver, kidneys, stomach and pancreas. It disrupts the normal process of insulin production and the most interesting part for me is how it disrupts your stomach. Apparently HFCS reduces or eliminates your stomachs ability to produce the chemical signals needed to tell your brain you are full and to stop eating. Chronic exposure to HFCS can ultimately prevent your brain from even recognizing this chemical signal.

If these things are indeed true then it would easily explain my suspicion of something being wrong with the food as well as explain the steady and increasing levels of heart disease as well as obesity and diabetes. HFCS is a poison in exactly the same way that alcohol is a poison.

Unfortunately HFCS is in nearly everything that Americans typically eat. Almost anything pre-made and “heat & eat” is loaded with it. Nearly every bread in our supermarkets is made with it. Juices, soft drinks, deserts…..you name it, contains this crap.

I’ve recently stopped consuming HFCS and that pretty much means everything I eat is scratch made from whole ingredients. I’ve spent the last few weeks learning to make bread, pizza dough etc. I’ve got to say nothing could be simpler or easier than making good bread. I’ve just made my first sourdough starter from scratch and I’m going to bake bread using the trub from the next batch of beer I brew to make a beer starter.

If the bread goes stale before you finish eating just dry it out and save it for bread crumbs or my favorite is to add it to the sauce in my ossobuco about 10 minutes before eating it. You could also feed to your dog or chickens. The best thing about making my own bread is I can pronounce every ingredient in it. Water, salt, flour and yeast.

This is the most recent video from UCLA I watched:

I_S, you are so right… although my degree is in biotechnology, I took enough food science courses to know just how much “stuff” is in processed food. The kind of technology they have is amazing, too — the ability to centrifuge something to remove fat, the freeze-dry process that allows you to incorporate real food instead of just chemical flavorings. But the use of technology is far surpassed by the chemical additives, preservatives, flavorings and everything else designed to make our food shelf-stable and “fresh” longer, thus reducing overall waste and cost.

I do the same thing you do… make everything from scratch, from whole ingredients. No more pre-made mayonnaise, salad dressing, soup, bread, pasta. (All the meat, fruit and vegetables already come from my own farm.) It’s easy to learn to make your own cheese, mustard and other things that you use.

I will say, there are products out there that have limited ingredients. The apple butter, syrup and jelly we sell has one ingredient on the label: Apples. We found a way to make it without sugar, spice, preservatives. Many others are doing the same thing, but you have to read the label to be sure.

People are not overeating (just) because of lack of control, they are overeating because the S.A.D (Standard American Diet) is nutrionally STARVING us to death.

Because the government has been, and continues to be, bought off with bullshit “science” concerning nutrition, turning to them to !DO SOMETHING!!! will only make it worse.

Nearly everything we thought we “knew” about our bodies and our food has been created by marketers that are selling, not any basis in science.

Human beings are NOT meant to eat the grains and starches that make up the bulk of our diets. We need real FAT, real protein and plenty of fruits and vegetables but we do not NEED grains in any big quantities.

I see what the “healthy” government rules have done to the kids’ school lunches, they have turned them into high carb, low protein, low fat and chemical only meals that the kids hate and it leaves them starving (both in reality, small portions-too small, and nutritionally).

This is what I know, O’care wasn’t about health, nor insurance, nor anything else, it was about control and connected-to-government industries taking over our lives.

The assault on the grocery stores will just be another link in our chains.

And more cancer and suicide deaths in our families.

Oh, and my final pet peeve concerning this, if the medical (and government sanctioned/propagated) advice on weight is correct, then WHY are so many health care “professionals” FAT as fuck?

While my dad was in the hospital I noticed that the fat nurse/docs outnumbered the close to normal weight by at least two to one. All while telling my dad what to do to lose weight! Oh the irony!

(personal note to @bb)

You sir (I assume), amuse me to no end. You jump right up on your Christian High Horse, quick to judge and condemn Muck, telling him what your god thinks of him.

As if you have a freaking clue what your God thinks.

This is what I know, my god would NEVER condemn a man for using the brain he gave them to question. He would be more concerned with those that were actually DOING evil, versus those that dared to question him.

Your god is like some Dictator that declares all must blindly obey, or perish in the flames.

Then, apparently, by your continued insistence to point out that others are “bad” people, he also negates the parts of his own teachings that tell his followers to not judge and is going to reward those followers for going around and forcing their beliefs down others throats while lobbying to mandate them through governmental law.

Just wtf bb, wtf?

So, in your heaven, John Wayne Gacy will have a seat at your feast (cause he “found” god and said he was sorry), but ole’ Muckster will go to hell for using the brain your god gave him?

Really?

I hope (to hell) you are right bb, then you and my pedophile, but totally holier-than-me, Uncle – he is a Deacon in his church – can enjoy your self-righteousness amongst yourselves.

I’ll be down in Hell with the likes of Muck, burning, but not feeling like a total schmuck, because Satan is truly God’s bitch and there is NOTHING worse than a questioning mind.

How the hell you don’t suffocate on your own hypocrisy and bullshit astounds me.

Bless you anyway bb. Your path is as right as mine, and Muck’s.

@TE: Thanks sweetheart! I knew you come to my defense!

But don’t worry about heaven and hell – they are figments of old white men’s imagination and have no connection to the real world.

One passes this way once, born by dumb luck (or terrible fate) into situations you have to overcome or coast along depending upon time, continent and parents.

In the very end, whether sooner or later, we pass through the gate at the other end of what has either been a fine ride or a terrible venture, depending solely on where you were born, who you were born to, whatever the situation is that you must confront to the point of puberty and how many just plain guts you have.

Born into an African family, your future is pregnant at 15 or 16 and every 12-18 months thereafter unless you are luckily connected with a mission who believes in birth control.

Born into an American family (think Brady Bunch) you are educated, entertained, loved and until you set forth on your own (maybe after college) you are well taken care of – perhaps to the point that taking care of yourself is a stretch!!! But birth control is never a problem unless you screw up.

If you are born an Indian (Asian), your future depends solely upon the status of your parents. If they are lower cast, so will you be. If you are upper cast, fret not, you’re golden..

But since I believe in neither heaven or hell, The end point for you and I is the point where we die and what we leave behind in the form of actions, what we contributed to the human race and how many other not-so-lucky people we helped along the way.

I-S, thank you, you made me laugh out loud, as you often do. Happy Monday and St. Pat’s. (regrets to the Irish company/entity that recently scolded people for using anything but St. Patrick’s, those Catholic are sometimes touchy). Having grown up around many holier-than-thou friends and family, I can only take so much until I break. Oops.

Muck, sir, I love your dedication to your belief system. I, too, believe that it is most important to focus on your actions, and growth as a human, in THIS world and not freak out about the next.

You doubt there will be a next, all I have to say is if the bright light comes, follow it and someday will have a real talk. All I know is that my mom is still around Muck, it isn’t just memories when others (who didn’t know her) feel her too.

I am absolutely positive that how I treat – and judge – others is more important than following the teachings of an ancient, Middle Eastern, civilizations belief system. It is also more important to love, offer acceptance, hope and human kindness. As my grandpa used to say, “pray like everything you do depends on god, work like it depends on you, you’ll be okay.”

So, 2014 is my year of completion and motivation. I’ve the speed of the “leader” (oh the irony) become the speed of his team (that be me) and I’m done with it. I was a different person a decade ago, her and I will meet again this year.

Hugs and kisses Muck, it always makes me smile when I see you here (many others too), I think about you often and pray to the universe to surround you in healing 🙂 – I thought you’d enjoy that. *wink*

Tell you what, if you are right, I want you to know – today – that I find you informative, funny and a wonderful human being, and if I’m right you owe me and the debt will be paid in about 30 years (with any luck, but that is a long story in itself)

Have a great day!

I don’t read bb’s posts either. Why should I? He OBVIOUSLY never read my book. He struts like a peacock and screeches like an owl. Yea, I made peacocks and owls, but I don’t like them.

The principles of whom I honor and reward couldn’t be clearer. Yea, for I have written;

“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But= when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
