Police shot Virginia man 23 times, autopsy shows

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. –  An autopsy report says Martinsburg police officers shot a Virginia man 23 times during an altercation in 2013.

The report says Wayne Arnold Jones died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The 50-year-old Stephens City, Va., man’s brothers are suing the city over the shooting on behalf of his estate. The wrongful death lawsuit seeks $200 million in damages.

Media outlets report that the family’s lawyer, Sherman L. Lambert Sr., filed a copy of the autopsy report in federal court in Martinsburg on Tuesday. Lambert also filed an amended lawsuit that adds the officers as defendants.

Police have said Jones drew a knife and stabbed one officer during a scuffle.

Last week, a judge ordered the city to provide the autopsy report and a state police report to the plaintiffs.

They should change “Serve and Protect” to “Revenue Generation and Crime Documentation”. In addition, they should sport the skull and crossbones in place of a badge. Someday its gonna get really messy.

This is Banana Republic stuff, really.

When I lived in Kenya for a year, the papers were full of the cops shooting people and the person was always shot about 30 times.

Then we have the story about the NYC cops that shot a bunch of innocent bystanders last year.

Why can’t we ever get CONgress and Obongo in the range of the friendly fire???

Ya know, if they had only shot him 4 or 5 times I wouldn’t consider this very newsworthy, because at close quarters someone with a knife can be as dangerous as someone with a gun – if very skilled, even more so. And he apparently stabbed one cop before getting shot – doesn’t say how badly.

But shooting the guy 23 times? That takes time and effort! Hard to call that a defensive shooting – that probably means at least one cop emptied their gun, maybe more than one did. If one cop did all that shooting it would require a reload. Sounds more like a murder.

People often call this sort of thing a training issue, but really, it’s a mindset / attitude issue. It seems a lot of cops keep shooting long after the threat is down.

BTW, great to see you back around, Hope.

I wonder how many rounds their clip holds…12?…after they emptied a clip, they had to reload. They did so out of pleasure, the power and glory of murdering somebody. They’re Nazis, who also loved murdering people. Savages of all stripes enjoy murdering people.

@AWD: most departments are issuing pistols that hold between 12 and 15, with a few issuing the Glock 17 or M&P9 that have 17 round magazines. But this article says the guy was shot 23 times, which at usual rates of police marksmanship suggests that something like 100 bullets were fired at him.

Oh, wait, it gets worse…

http://wvrecord.com/news/260745-lawsuit-filed-against-martinsburg-police-over-fatal-shooting

“The complaint says Jones attempted to run, fell and was beaten by officers. As he laid on the ground, officers shot between 15 to 25 rounds into him, killing him.”

I guess that would explain a higher hit ratio – shooting at something stationary a few feet away is probably how they qualify each year!

Call me crazy but last time I checked, shooting an unarmed person who’s lying on the ground helpless is first degree murder.

Also consider the fact that the majority of times polices officers fire their weapons they misses their intended target. The average hit ratio is closer to 20%. Take that into account and consider he was hit 23 times. The probability is pretty good there were more shots fired than that.

At some point, I expect he would have stopped moving.

If you haven’t been in a fire fight, fuck off. Neither have I. You’re taught to keep shooting until the threat is neutralized or until you run out of bullets. I guess they ran out of bullets.

What difference does it make how many times he was shot. The police used justifiable lethal force. Too bad the guy was stupid enough to pull a knife on a group of cops with guns.

There should be a Darwin Award for this. Natural selection is a bitch.

Okay, I won’t fuck off.

I don’t much give a shit that the goon was shot. He pulled a knife. But this wasn’t a firefight – kinda hard to have a firefight with a knife. This was overkill. You train as you fight, and when it came to pistolwork, we trained to fire controlled pairs fired center mass, then a failsafe shot to the head. Bang-bang… bang. Lower the weapon to low-ready, scan for threats and then re-engage as necessary until the threat is neutralized.

Blazing off an entire mag, dumping the empty and reloading, then blazing off more rounds? That’s some serious kind of fucked up…

Shoot the guy? Yeah, okay. Fine. But riddle his corpse with dozens of rounds? That’s some sick ass sadistic shit right there… not even I’m that bad.

@ T4C,

I know we’ve had our differences, but good find. There’s no reason why a podunk police department (or any PD) needs snipers in ghillie suits.

Couple things, if anyone cares.

1. Those goons in the ghillie suits… those were actually ghillie capes and veils bought off-the-shelf. A true hunter of men knows how to craft his own suit from scratch to match the surroundings exactly. Took me about 2 seconds to spot those goons. Forest green against tan grass? Tacti-cool store-bought capes and veils? Total amateurs.. watch the video again, and now that you know what to look for, you can spot them easy…

2. I contrasted their gear with what the British snipers were wearing at about 1:40 or so (oh? You didn’t recognize the camo pattern and gear as British? Shame on you..). The Brit sniper on the far left has a FLIR unit attached to his rifle. Forward Looking Infrared, probably with a ballistic drop compensator built in. The goobers in the grass? Pretty much plain vanilla Leupold Mark IV’s. Good to know the capabilities and limitations of their gear. FLIR units are available on the civilian market, by the way. So are Gen 4+ NV units, BDC’s, etc…

3. Check out the video at 0:45… pause it. Look closely at their gear. See those scopes? The Leupold’s? There’s no lens covers or any attempt made whatsoever to hide the glass. Even a chunk of your wife’s nylons over the lens, held on with a rubber band would be better than that. Plenty of guys have been scragged over the years because of light reflection. And ghillie suits are notoriously flammable. Putting on a wookie suit just makes you a great big pile of tinder. The only nod towards fire protection those two goobers have on are nomex flight gloves, probably because they saw someone who knew what they were doing do it.. but their clothing is straight old-school flammable BDU’s… derp. And I don’t see either of them wearing a camelback, nor the tell-tale hump of one under their cool-guy ghillie suits… ever lay in the hot sun all day with a wool blanket over your head? Yeah, it’s like that. Couple hours doing that, and they have to rotate out with another team if they didn’t bring any water… double derp.

No spotting scopes, no radios, no water, exposed glass (and I’m liking that uncamouflaged scope dude on the left has! Stands out nice and bold. Guess what’s behind that scope? Yep… yer face.), store bought crap, horrible positioning…

Of course, it could just be dog-and-pony shit to attract the rubes and make them say “wow!”… a nice piece of misleading information… look like a total dipshit to make folks think you’re a total dipshit when actually you’re not… but I’ve never credited copfuks with an overabundance of brains… so take it for what it’s worth…
