ADRIAN PETERSON DISCIPLINARY SCHOOL

Here are two points of view regarding Adrian Peterson whipping his four year old son with a tree branch. I was hit by my parents as a child if I did something I wasn’t supposed to do. I was spanked and hit with a belt a couple times. After that, the threat of the belt was good enough to make me fall into line. The nuns in Catholic school would also hit kids with a ruler. None of this left psychological scars. I usually deserved it.

But, Adrian Peterson went too far. I was hit with a belt when I was 10 years old, not when I was 4 years old. The pictures of the cuts and bruises on his son’s body are proof that his form of punishment was sadistic and cruel. He clearly has anger issues that stem from his own childhood, when he was probably abused. Charles Barkley says it’s a cultural thing in the South. He’s wrong. Hitting a four year old so hard that you break the skin is going too far. Boomer is right. Peterson deserves a severe penalty. Maybe Goodell will make him sit out for a half a game.

Adrian Peterson Indicted For Child Abuse, Turns Himself In

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A warrant was issued Friday for the arrest of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson after a grand jury in Texas indicted him for reckless or negligent injury to a child.

Peterson traveled to Texas and turned himself in early Saturday morning. He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail at about 1:15 a.m. CST, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

He posted a $15,000 bond and left jail about 30 minutes later.

Peterson will not play in Sunday’s game at TCF Bank Stadium against the New England Patriots. On Friday afternoon, the Vikings said Peterson had been deactivated. That’s different from a suspension, as Peterson will be still be paid as officials investigate.

Sports Radio 610 in Houston obtained a draft of the police report which says Peterson admitted that he did, in his words, “whoop” one of his children last May while the child was visiting him at his home near Houston.

The punishment happened after Peterson’s son pushed another of Peterson’s children off of a motorbike video game, the report says.

During a Skype session with his mom back in Minnesota, the 4-year-old boy asked if he could tell her something. According to the report, Peterson said, “Go ahead and tell her and show her what happened.”

The boy said he got a whooping with a switch — a wooden rod or tree branch used for punishment.

When the boy returned to his mother in Eden Prairie, Minn., she took him to a doctor.

The doctor told investigators that the boy had a number of lacerations on his thighs, along with bruise-like marks on his lower back and buttocks and cuts on his hand.

The police report says the doctor described some of the marks as open wounds and termed it “child abuse.” Another examiner agreed, calling the cuts “extensive.”

The report also states the four year-old had been hit with a belt, and that Peterson put leaves in the boy’s mouth while he was being hit with the switch with his pants down. The child told his mother Peterson likes belts and switches and has a whooping room, according to the report.

Photographs obtained from the Houston police report show pictures of the injuries.

Another picture shows Peterson demonstrating the kind of switch he used.

The police report also includes text messages between Peterson and the boy’s mother. First he texted to her: “You will be mad at me about his leg.” Later, he texted: “He got about five more pops than normal. He didn’t drop one tear! … He’s tough as nails.”

(credit: CBS)

In further text messages, Peterson allegedly said, “Never do I go overboard! But all my kids will know, hey daddy has the biggie heart but don’t play no games when it comes to acting right.”

When investigators questioned Peterson, they say he told them he regarded it as a normal spanking and not excessive. He told investigators, “To be honest with you, I feel very confident with my actions because I know my intent,” and when asked if he would reconsider using switches in the future, said he would never “eliminate whooping my kids … because I know how being spanked has helped me in my life.”

A grand jury seated earlier this summer decided not to charge Peterson.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Phil Grant said in a press conference Saturday afternoon that after seeing photos of the injuries, the grand jury thought Peterson went beyond “reasonable discipline.”

“Obviously parents are entitled to discipline their child as they see fit except for when that discipline exceeds what the community would say is reasonable,” he said.

Grant also said whoever leaked the photos and documents will face punishment.

“In the State of Texas, investigations of child abuse are confidential under the Texas Family Code,” Grant said. “It’s inappropriate, it shouldn’t have happened, and we’re going to cooperate with law enforcement authorities to find out who did it.”

Grant added that the case is in its preliminary stages, and it will likely be several months until its ready for trial — which might not be until next year.

On Friday, Peterson told WCCO-TV’s Mike Max that he didn’t think he’d face another indictment. The day’s developments caught him by surprise.

If Peterson is convicted, he could face up to two years in county jail. His next court appearance date has not been announced.

Peterson’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, issued this statement Friday afternoon:

“This indictment follows Adrian’s full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son. He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened. He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours. Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury.”

The NFL recently unveiled a domestic-violence policy, which stipulates a six-game suspension for a first offense but allows for steeper penalties if children are involved.

The indictment against Peterson comes on the heels of another story involving an NFL running back and serious allegations.

On Monday, the league indefinitely suspended Ravens running back Ray Rice after video was published showing the player punching his soon-to-be wife and knocking her out cold.

That was excessive. The kid is too young. I have been switched – the marks I remember are similar to those. They are pretty superficial, and I do not think there was risk of serious injury. You do not soon forget a good switching to the back of the legs.

I used a 4″ switch on my kid once. Had to hold it by two fingers it was so short. Still stung him. He went screaming to mom. Mom came out all fired up – til I showed her the switch. Then she gave him another swat for being such a crybaby.

But I would not convict him over that. No way no how. At least he seems to be trying to teach right from wrong, and he was not going to cause serious injury. Unlike some assholes. Seems to me he just did not know better, but he was trying. Not successfully, but this is one instance I give points for trying.

He will learn a valuable lesson here, and will not repeat the mistake. At least I think so.

But two years in prison? Yep, that will really help his kids and family. Not.

I could not fire or suspend an employee for this stuff, nor for what Rice did. I am undecided if athletes should be held to different standards. I can think of no other field where employees can be punished in these ways. I know it is an issue of marketing, but wtf? First a guy loses a team because he is racist ( since when is that illegal), Ferry comes under fire for discussing racial demographics vis a vis revenue/profit/season ticket holders, etc.

Political correctness sucks, in my opinion.

Admin – why should he be deprived of his livelihood if he has been convicted of no crime whatsoever? Same goes for that piece of shit Rice. I can vote my displeasure with my pocketbook if I am incensed.

I’ve no objection to switching, but not on a kid that young. And certainly not with such a loss of self-control. Physical punishment should sting, be an attention-getter, but not be injurious.

“Communities are not the source nor reference point for morality.” – F_I

I call bullshit. Communities absolutely ARE the source for morality. Shame has very much to do with this, and public shaming used to be a very effective deterrent against unwanted behavior. Communities would say “Up to this line, and no further”. Those who crossed that line would be shunned and become persona non grata, their lives and reputations ruined.

Plus, communities collectively came up with laws that define what is right and wrong – the formal limits that people in the community can go up to, but not cross – and if you knew anything about English Common Law (try reading Blackstone), you’d know where our laws came from. If this is not “morality” on a collective scale, then what is?

Only since the disgusting 60’s and the moral relativism that was pushed, have we thought that a community isn’t the source, or even a reference point, for morals. The members of a community were usually Christians, and that morality was reflected in law.

The rise of the hedonists and the poison they pushed is evident in your squishy remarks, F_I….

As far as the article and Llpoh’s comments,

I got whupped by a switch and a belt when I was young. I had no idea what marks were left, since I couldn’t – and still can’t – twist my head around and look at my own ass. However, it hurt like hell and I wouldn’t classify it as “child abuse”.

Plus, some doctor or other’s opinion on what laws were broken means Jack Shit. Since there’s millions of doctors, what one doctor might consider to be “child abuse” won’t square with another doctor’s opinion. Then there’s the whole fact that, unless they’re a member of the Bar, doctors are not lawyers or District Attorneys, so how the fuck do they know what constitutes “child abuse”?

Kid screwed up and got whupped. Whoopty shit. Loads of us did.

Matter of fact, now that I think about it, the most screwed up people I have ever known were the ones who had those snotty parents that looked at you and sniffed “WE don’t spank our children… we reason with them..”. And then their kid grows up to be an even bigger fucking douchebag than you, has no moral compass to guide them and end up being smoke jumpers or drug addicts or those Nazi feminists you just love to hate… or else some metro-sexual, limp wristed emo fag who wears eyeliner, has bolts in his face and cries tears about how “nobody understands him!” and spends his time cutting himself…

Nice job.

It wasn’t a TREE BRANCH!!! You make it sound like the little groid got knocked out with a half-ton log.

I had to go cut my own damn switch when I was a kid. Come back with something overly huge or downright puny, Daddy would get right pissed and then HE’D go cut a switch… and you didn’t want that.

Or else he used a belt. And he had those uber-skinny early 60’s belts. At least with the belts from the 70’s – the ones that were so wide it looked like it powered machinery during the age of steam – the force was spread out some and didn’t hurt so bad…

I didn’t get many ass whuppins, but the ones I did get made an impression. Never got whupped for the same thing twice and you bet your ass I behaved myself and didn’t backsass Mama or give disrespect…

Part of this is why we’ve gotten to the point where CPS can take your kids for almost no reason today. The “there augha be a law!” types who stick their big fucking noses into shit that ain’t their concern… mind your own fucking business and I’ll mind mine.

Admin shows total ignorance of the law. As he is an accountant, that should not be a surprise.

In his example, speeding resulting in death, the driver has exhibited basic intent. THat is, the driver was aware of the laws of the road, and broke them, resulting in injury. Basic intent is thus satisfied.

Peterson does not appear to have been aware his actions were causing or would be considered to be causing injury to his child.

Thus, I personally do not see the basis to deem he had intent. But I am sure a smart lawyer can argue otherwise.

To be a crime, there must be intent. That Is the law almost everywhere in the world.

Llpoh
Llpoh
September 15, 2014 2:30 pm

I did not say it is ok. The phrase Admin cherry-picked was relative to whether I thought Peterson committed a crime.

I think the kid was too young to be switched. And I think the switching was excessive. But not to the point of being criminal. Stupid, but not criminal, not as a one time thing.

That said, I think it is pretty difficult if not impossible to reason with a four year old. Spanking is definitely an option.

Llpoh
Llpoh
September 15, 2014 2:35 pm

Stuck – your opinion. Mine is different. It was excessive. But not worth sending him to jail. And it will be hard proving intent – esp. In Texas. If the video had not surfaced, he was home free – grand jury did not indict. Guess you missed that bit.

The dumb bastard did not know any better. Now he does.

Llpoh
Llpoh
September 15, 2014 2:42 pm

Harry – as I understand it, negligence is when the person knows if something were to occur, it would be a crime, and neglects to foresee his actions will result in the incident.

“But criminal negligence is a ‘misfeasance or ‘nonfeasance’ (see omission), where the fault lies in the failure to foresee”

I am not sure they can make that case re Peterson. He administered the switching exactly as planned, and did not in any way consider it wrong at the time. If he beat him with a club, and failed to forsee he would break his leg, but did, I suspect that would be negligence.

But lawyers will argue otherwise, of course.

I have said several times it was not right, and was excessive. But probably not illegal, and not something I would throw him in jail for.

That the Admin is enlightened is a good thing. But not everyone is. And those unenlightened souls cannot be convicted of a crime unless they intended to commit such crime.

Tommy – Billy thinks folks should toughen up some. I think he is largely right about that. My old man left a lot of marks on my ass, but he sure as hell did not deserve jail for it (except maybe once, but that is another story. And even then did not deserve a two year sentence – maybe a week. He fucked up and went to his grave regretting it.). At times it was excessive. He didn’t do it because he was mean. He did it, in his mind, to teach me right from wrong. He could have done better. If stupid were made criminal everyone would be in jail.

Billy should perhaps temper his zeal a bit, but he is not wrong that generally folks are too politically correct, and that we should call a spade a shovel.

Peterson seems to be trying. If his background was poor southern, his way is likely to be how he was taught. I will not crucify him, so long as he has learned from this.

Peterson seems to be trying in that he is around. That may be a huge step up from his own experiences. He seemed to be proud of his efforts to teach his kid right and wrong. He did not try to hide anything.

Punishment is not the answer in this case. Education and enlightenment is. Hopefully he learned from this.

Corporal punishment, when applied below the belt across the buttocks, done in such a way not to damage but to deter is very effective in discouraging bad or inappropriate behavior. By the time a kid is preteen, he or she knows the rules and further use of physical discipline will likely do more harm than good.

I got whopped by both Mom and Dad during my asshole years. Dad used his hand and Mom had him take a ping-pong paddle with holes drilled into it to let the air out for her use. I preferred to be spanked by Dad because after a whipping applied by Mom, she would usually retreat to their bedroom and cry about doing it which hurt me far more than the paddling!

When I was a youngster in Jackson,Miss., we had a large creek/drainage ditch (depending on how much water was in it!) that ran behind the small development we lived in. Me and other trouble makers after a nice afternoon shower would go swim in the creek – which had been specifically forbidden.. So I’d come home from school, hike out with the other guys (most of whom could swim) and go jump in the creek. Dad would come home, finding me missing, he’d come down to the creek and whip my ass all the way back to the house..

This went on for a fair amount of time when suddenly, I came home from school, Dad was waiting on me, told me to get a towel and my bathing suit and get my butt in the car. Down to the Jackson, Miss. YMCA where I found myself enrolled in swimming classes.. For the first and last time (and last) I had out-stubborned my Dad and he decided to fix the problem another way..

After I demonstrated really good swimming ability, I could go swim in the creek any damn time I wanted to.

Ah the good old days!
