GRADUATE

I’ll be off-line for most of the next two days. Number one son is graduating from Penn State tomorrow. It looks like he was destined to graduate from Penn State, as he was already wearing their hat when he was driving pop pop’s boat at the age of three.

This would be our last 4 hour road trip on the PA Turnpike, but number two son has decided to go to Penn State too. He starts in August. We have many more road trips to go. I hope he doesn’t suck his thumb in class.

Kevin is breaking Avalon’s heart by moving to Colorado in three weeks to make his way in life. We’ve done our part. All those Donuts With Dad days over the years paid off. Except, I probably should have laid off the donuts.

We taught him to work hard and never give up. I thought I would never be as proud as I was when he was one of the key members of his championship hockey team. But, I think I’ll be prouder tomorrow when he gets his degree.

He is graduating with an IT degree in Security & Risk Analysis (whatever that means) with no student loan debt. I think we raised a good kid with a skeptical mind, who understands the difficult times that lie ahead. The ball is now in his court.

I’m hoping he can eventually run my TBP IT operation clandestinely when I need to go underground during the revolution.

If anyone out there in the Fort Collins area of Colorado needs a smart, hard working, liberty loving young IT person, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with Kevin. He’ll arrive in his new home during the first week of June.

But now it’s time to celebrate.

“It’s a father’s duty to give his sons a fine chance.”  – George Eliot

Watching your children grow into adults, move away from the nest and start a new life is hard, it reminds us that all too soon we will be the pop pops.
I have three grandchildren and one more on the way, how the heck did that happen, seems like yesterday I was teaching them how to bait a crawler harness.

Sigh….

Anyway, congratulations, Kevin sounds like a great kid raised by two great parents.

Excellent! I was able to enjoy my graduation for about a week. Then my 1A classification came in the mail. I had a very short time to decide what to do. If I was going to Vietnam, I wanted it to be more or less on my terms so I signed up for Navy OCS and flight training. Thank God you and yours don’t have to go through this!

Congrats! I do have son recommendation for your son. First, to follow everything going on with Tech Crunch Disrupt and to watch where the Silicon Valley titans are investing their money. Second, get interested in Bitcoin, doesn’t matter how or why, but definitely get interested. Bitcoin has made leaps over the past year. Third, follow Chamath Palihapitiya opinions about what is happening in the world. He also is launching a fellowship for coders soon.

Congratulations admin to you and your sons and to Avalon. I fondly remember graduating HS and getting on an airplane to begin my own journey. What a great time that was. I had the world by the balls then. Despite coming to learn that the world actually has us by the balls, life is still good. Great even!

I may not be llpoh successful (yet) but I credit all of my successes in life to my parents simply because they were involved in my life from the very beginning. Encouraging, teaching and nudging me toward independence. I think it was a shock to both mom and dad when that day finally arrived. Tell your CO bound son to call mom every week to alleviate her anxiety. Being a mom is a tough job and to suddenly find herself “unemployed” is hard on them.

Be prepared when you and mom go to visit your son in CO. You’ll love it so much you’ll never want to leave!

Congratulations again Jim and Avalon……sounds like you raised some winners. The debt free part will be the gift that keeps on giving.

Many folks who graduate from penn state eventually wind up in the state penn.

Just kidding. Wow. It seems like just yesterday we were reading about your first trip to Altoona. The older I get the shorter and faster the years become.

Sounds like he doesn’t yet have a job in Colorado? hmmm He either likes the mountains … or, there’s a girl involved. Right? No matter … with a degree in computer security he should be employed within a week or so. Hopefully, the job doesn’t entail “Would you like fries with that order?” j/k

You and he did a HELLUVA job. Many many congrats.

PS; My repair job on the concrete steps looks fantastic. (And I didn’t go to penn state!)

Congrats Jim!

I have become a hockey dad, and it has changed my son’s life for the better. He’s 16. I’ve become a believer that physical sports like this are one of the few avenues left that are teaching our boys how to become men. Hockey is a little unique and probably better than others because the coaches are typically not from the public school.

Lived in the area for years. Traffic in Denver metro is maybe worse than Philly.
Small college towns are GREAT places.
Apply to the monster Budweiser plant first, then the University. Both will have great benefits.

Another couple graduating parenthood. Empty nest syndrome is real.
1. Wondering why you didn’t want more kids 20 years ago.
2. Turning around when you hear a kid calling, ‘Dad’.
3. Smiling at parents with little kids and dying inside.
4. Looking into an empty room and tearing up.
5. Wondering why the phone doesn’t ring every 5 minutes.
6. Afraid to hear the phone ring after 8pm.
7. Accidentally calling a young man by your kid’s name.

Stephanie Shepard

Sensetti- WTF? Do you have any idea what is happening in the VC world right now? Do you have any clue what is happening within Wall Street and Bitcoin? Goldman Sachs just co-invest $50 million into a Bitcoin company. The Winklevoss twins just debuted GEMINI and claim it is the “NASDAQ of Bitcoin”. Top executives of Wall Street banks have jump ship in the past 6 months to head up Bitcoin startup companies. On top of this you have no clue what I do for work anymore.

A degree in “Security & Risk Analysis” ? The NSA wants him!

On a different note: my heart goes out to Jim and Avalon in that their son is making THE BIG MOVE away from the nest – I can attest that this is VERY painful indeed. My daughters and grand children live hundreds and hundreds of miles away – too painful to relate here what that entails – you will find this out for yourselves.

T4C- The price has become stable since the collapse of Mt. Gox. (and their trading bots being out of the market). Its liquidity is still a problem but there are new startups and partnerships that have received massive financial backing in the past 6 months to solve the problem. Its velocity is steady right now and I am hoping it will increase by the end of the year.

IS: Just google “Bitcoin price” . It shows the exact valuation at the top of the search. Right now it is $244.99. I think the price has finally bottomed out since the Mt.Gox fiasco (If you haven’t read the Mt.Gox/ Silk Road/ DEA story- do so, it is hilarious).

Bitcoin around $240, it has not become stable since Gox collapsed, despite Clam saying it has. It is roughly stable in 2015, but volatile on a daily basis as unwary sheep are shorn.

It reached 1100 or so just before Gox died.

An fool and his money are soon parted.

T4C- Regardless what happens with the price Blockchain is here to stay. Bitcoin at the moment has raised more money for infrastructure than was raised for internet infrastructure in the 1990s. So much money is being pour into Bitcoin right now by VC investors. They feel the change in the wind..

Steph – I know how to read a fucking chart. Gox died in Feb 14, bitcoin at 1100. It dropped steadily until end of the year, and stabilized then around $240.

Prove me wrong.

The naysayers are winning by knockout at this point.
