When Things Fall Apart: A Graduation Message for a Dark Age

Guest Post by John Whitehead

Those coming of age today will face some of the greatest obstacles ever encountered by young people.

In addition to being overtaxed and underemployed, they will also be forced to march in lockstep with a government that no longer exists to serve the people but which demands they be obedient slaves or suffer the consequences.

Unfortunately, we who should have known better failed to guard against such a future.

Worse, we neglected to maintain our freedoms or provide our young people with the tools necessary to survive, let alone succeed, in the impersonal jungle that is modern America.

Textual Recollections for the Graduate

By Doug “Uncola” Lynn via TheBurningPlatform.com

My oldest graduated from college last weekend so my family and I attended the convocation for the College of Business on Friday and the commencement on Saturday.  It was a great few days with us hosting a dinner party for family and friends at a restaurant in the lively college town after the ceremony; and followed by relaxation in and around the hotel pool later in the evening.

With the college courses taken during high school, my graduate finished a semester early with two majors and a minor, Magna Cum Laude (3.89 / 4.00 GPA), and with Honors (i.e. – through the Honors Program); plus, was nominated by the faculty to be a Convocation Student Marshal for the College of Business.

Amidst all of today’s ceaseless millennial bashing and never-ending doom porn, I was reminded this past weekend regarding the relevance of milestones, of personal achievement, and succession, against the larger cincture of generational gyrations; this current Fourth Turning in particular.

The Biggest Fools on the Planet—–Reflections On A University Graduation Day

Gassy Hacks and Big Quacks

Today, we recall the “commencement” at the end of four years at the University of Vermont. The university itself is imposing and a little intimidating. The rest of the world works in warehouses or common office spaces. Academia labors in hallowed “halls” and prestigious “centers.”

People in the Main Street world work for profits… and are subject to market economics. The professoriate is above it all; no profit and loss statements… no profit motives or incentive bonuses… and (for those with “tenure”) no chance of getting fired, no matter how incompetent, irrelevant, or wrong they are. The private sector depends on output and results; academia harbors gassy hacks who may never produce much of anything at all.

The ceremony on Sunday opened with the procession of the university luminati, led by bagpipers of the St. Andrews Society. Ordinary people – even presidents of the United States of America – wear common coats and ties; the academic elite are gussied up with all manner of robes, funny hats, cowls, tassels, honors… and a line of capital letters following their names like baby ducks behind a waddling quack.

“All that brainpower… working on our Justin… it must have done him some good,” parents say to themselves. Then, they have their doubts. Justin seems to think that “diversity” is what really matters,  that Bernie Sanders has the right idea, and that eating gluten is a sin.

Privately, they wonder if they haven’t just been the biggest fools on the planet, spending more than $100,000 to put their boy through four years of brainwashing,  with no visible improvement in his critical thinking. But this is no time to say anything. It’s too late. So, they take their seats, along with thousands of others. At least, those were the dark thoughts gathering in our mind as we sat in a plastic chair on the green, waiting for the festivities to begin.

WTF CONTROL FREAK STORY OF THE DAY

Arrest Warrants Issued To People Who Cheered At High School Graduation

Senatobia, Miss. (CBS HOUSTON) — Four people who cheered at a Mississippi high school graduation may be thrown in jail after police issued warrants for their arrest. The superintendent who filed the charges said it’s a necessary move and he is demanding order at the ceremony.

Senatobia Municipal School District Superintendent Jay Foster filed “disturbing the peace” charges against four people who yelled at graduation, WREG-TV reports. Miller and Henry Walker were two of the four Senatobia High School graduation ceremony attendees who were asked to leave for cheering on their 18-year-old daughter, Lanarcia Walker, as she crossed the stage.

“He said ‘you did it baby’, waived his towel and went out the door,” Walker said of a brief video showing Henry exiting the ceremony as he cheered.

“When she went across the stage I just called her name out. ‘Lakaydra’. Just like that,” Ursula Miller explained to WREG what she shouted to her niece at the ceremony.

QUOTES OF THE DAY – GRADUATION EDITION

“A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that “individuality” is the key to success.”

Robert Orben

“Read. Read all the time. Read as a matter of principle, as a matter of self-respect. Read as a nourishing staple of life.”

David McCullough

“Develop and protect a moral sensibility and demonstrate the character to apply it. Dream big. Work hard. Think for yourself. Love everything you love, everyone you love, with all your might. And do so, please, with a sense of urgency, for every tick of the clock subtracts from fewer and fewer.”

David McCullough

“Congratulations!
Today is your day
You’re off to great places
You’re off and away

You’ve got brains in your head
You’ve got feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself any
Direction you choose

You’re on your own
And you know what you know
And you are the guy
Who’ll decide where you go

Out there things can happen
And frequently do
To people as brainy
And footsy as you

And will you succeed?
Yes you will indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed)

You’re off to great places
Today is your day
Your mountain is waiting
Go, get on your way!”

GRADUATE

I’ll be off-line for most of the next two days. Number one son is graduating from Penn State tomorrow. It looks like he was destined to graduate from Penn State, as he was already wearing their hat when he was driving pop pop’s boat at the age of three.

This would be our last 4 hour road trip on the PA Turnpike, but number two son has decided to go to Penn State too. He starts in August. We have many more road trips to go. I hope he doesn’t suck his thumb in class.
