A DAY IN OBAMA’S AMERICA

Guest Post by starfcker

Sunday morning I set out north on I-95 to Jensen Beach, to work with a friend of mine who had just purchased a condo up there. Built in the seventies, he was gutting it completely and renovating the entire thing as a weekend retreat for he and his wife. Jensen Beach is about an hour and a half north from where I live, sort of a boring drive up I-95. Not today. In West Palm Beach I-95 is 5 lanes wide. I was in a Ford pickup truck on cruise control going 70 miles an hour.

Suddenly as I crested a hill, the two cars in front of me split wildly in either direction and started sliding out of control. NASCAR type stuff, white smoke, etc. I didn’t have time to watch them, as the reason for their chaotic maneuvers instantly became my problem. A middle-aged Haitian man had stopped his minivan in the middle of I-95 and was actually out of his car in the next to fastest lane directly in my path.

No time for brakes, I wanted to go right to the wide side, but there was a car next to me, so I had to go left as hard as I could. This put me in a head on trajectory to the concrete wall instantly. Now came the insane move, yanking it hard back to the right to avoid the wall. That particular truck does not have stability control and I really hoped I didn’t start rolling. I was trying my best to avoid the other cars from behind me now also skittering across the road in various degrees of control. I could hear minor collisions and screeching of tires galore as I barreled to the right across all 5 lanes, totally sideways to traffic, with everyone looking to hit as little as possible.

Before I hit the wall on the right side I managed to get it flipped around again heading back left, but by this time I was completely out of control and just skating. I was scrubbing off a lot of speed, and so were the cars around me, so I started to think this might be survivable. I ended up backwards against the left side wall, hitting it at about 15 or 20 miles an hour on the passenger side front corner. By this time there were 15 or 20 cars stopped in the road in various stages of damage or not, and all five lanes of I-95 had come to a complete stop.

I figured my damage at a grand or two, and decided to beat feet and not deal with the situation. I had collided with no one, just the wall, and miraculously everyone, including the idiot standing in the road, appeared to have survived. I limped to the next exit and called a tow truck. Instead of riding back home with the tow truck driver, and not wanting to waste the day, I called my buddy to come pick me up, as he was only about 20 minutes further north. It was a bad day, but not so bad, plowing into the minivan at that speed, or the left side wall on the first pass would have resulted in serious injury at a bare minimum.

Instead, I was fine, a little damage to the front of the truck, but not a scratch or bruise on me. There was a little convenience store where I was waiting, I went in, got something cold to drink, found a little concrete pad to sit on in a nice little garden between the store and the furniture store next door and waited for my buddy to pick me up. I had a bunch of phone calls to make, getting the mechanics address, directing the tow truck guy, etc. Changing the address with AMEX, who did the road service, was one of those punch in your card number type things and took a little concentration.

But I was in a comfortable spot and knew rescue was coming shortly. Some sixth sense suddenly made me look over my shoulder, and less than 20 feet behind me out of nowhere basically came a large black male moving towards me quickly and intently. I must have looked very small and unaware, sitting on that little concrete pad, hunched forward reading numbers into my cell phone to the credit card lady. I stood up faced him and gave him my best thousand yard vacant stare. I’m not a small guy, 6 foot, just under 200 pounds and pretty well built. He was slightly shorter and slightly heavier.

He stopped, looked at me for a second and then turned and strode purposely to the front of the store, got in his Chrysler 300 and drove away. I was sort of indifferent about the traffic accident, I knew I had dodged a big one there with a little luck and some great driving. The incident with the man however, and I was shook. I pride myself in my situation awareness. The pretty little garden I was sitting in, the upscale appearance of the storefronts, I had no reason to think I wasn’t in a totally safe environment.

How could I let that happen? And more importantly, am I getting to the age where my physical appearance sets me up to be a target for predators? And how did he get behind me? I was five seconds from disaster. My friend showed up and we went and worked on his condo all day. As we drove home, I asked him to pull into the exit and the convenience store, so I could try to figure out how this almost went so bad. Looking at it with fresh eyes, it was instantly obvious. there was a defunct car wash that ran around the back of the building .

The man had spotted me sitting in the garden and simply walked around the back of the building giving him the total element of surprise. He almost got me. I did not have a gun on me . If he had caught me from behind, it might not have mattered. My friend commented on the lushness of the surroundings, and how easy it would be to have a false sense of security in that environment. I had three opportunities to die today , all in the span of about an hour. Hit the van, hit the wall, get violently mugged. The common denominators were all black.

Glad you made it back home ok.Got to maintain situational awareness at all times But it is easy to let your guard down. It only takes a moment to get in a serious jam.I’ve been in that position a couple times but like you I saw the bastard in time to avoid being mugged. Both times they were black.

I’m not even 40 (and bigger than you) but can tell that I no longer have quite the intimidation value I had at 30. So I’m now carrying my CCW about 99% of the time. I continue to practice regularly and my handgun skills have never been better. By the end of this year I hope to be getting 100% hits on 3″ steel at 10 yards, rapid fire.

Carry daily, practice often, be aware of surroundings.

Joyous times in commiefascist amerika.

If you were going to relocate, what is everyone’s thoughts on the “American Redoubt” of Montana, Idaho, and/or Wyoming? Low taxes. Low cost of living. Gun rights. Low crime. Over 90% Caucasian. Far enough away from the Eastern Seaboard and Left Coast. The majority are like-minded folks. It could be a great place to reestablish for many of us. There are fewer people in the vastness of those three states combined than in the DC Metro area.

Florida, especially in the urban areas, but really the whole state is going to be a real hell hole when and if the SHTF. There is simply not enough social cohesion. The first sign of trouble, drive north.

Wow. Glad you survived, Jim!!

Your gun. Never leave home without it.

Good thing you weren’t texting while driving. Agree totally with Gungadin … defensive driving saved my ass on several occasions.

Give Avalon a big hug. Go out and have a cheese cake!

Paying attention on the freeway will save your life. Traffic often comes to a sudden and grinding halt in our part of the world as our freeway infrastructure sucks here in the Canadian Pacific NW. You have to have eyes in the back of your head as the guy behind you often isn’t paying as close attention. I leave at least 3 to 4 car lengths between me and the fellow in front when this happens and pray there is no barrier off the shoulder so that I can scoot out of the way of rear end day dreamers. Saved my life once when a semi trailer was’t paying attention and ended up on the bumper of the guy in front of me. I could see the smoke coming from his tires and brakes about 40 yards back and figured it would be a good time to park in the ditch…. I was right.

“what is everyone’s thoughts on the “American Redoubt” of Montana, Idaho, and/or Wyoming? Low taxes. Low cost of living. Gun rights. Low crime. Over 90% Caucasian”

I’ve spent a lot of time in those three states and seriously considered each of them as a place to move. Many pros, many cons. I ended up moving to another remote, redoubt location – which has somewhat similar characteristics, including >90% white and >Montana
-more liberal than you would expect
-vast distances and not close to ANYTHING
-fairly cold

>>Idaho
-not as cold as the other two
-some of the politicians are certifiably insane
-rather depressed economy outside of Boise – very much a place of meth and unemployed youth who aren’t going anywhere good, even if they are white
-significant gang activity in Boise and west of there
-south part of the state is heavily Mormon, if you aren’t one of them, you aren’t one of them

>>Wyoming
-colder than you would think – most of the state can get snow any month of the year
-very high elevation, very dry, there is hardly any crop agriculture there
-politically and socially the state is absolutely dominated by ranchers, oil barons, and to a lesser extent coal interests (these are often all three the same people)
-the NW corner of the state is overrun with tourists in summer, and will be wiped out by Yellowstone someday
-the SE corner of the state where all the cities are is uncomfortable closer to Denver and its sprawl and Californication

If you are independently wealthy any of them would be nice as a retreat. Living there and working would depend on your job skills and expectations.

FYI, the eastern parts of Oregon and Washington are usually included in the “redoubt”, but they suffer from the politics of their dominant coastal cities. Spokane is meh, although the Palouse region is at least a decent farming area.

Sorry for the double post, part of my entry didn’t get in.

****For Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, your general characteristics are:***
-western ranching heritage, conservative and independent, can be rather gruff and violent at times
-mostly dry
-not ideal for growing good (I’m aware of the potato belt)
-somewhat limited economy (except for Boise), you may find it difficult to make a living
-if oil stops flowing, these states come to a stop. There is no useful transportation without oil here. There is no real economy without oil here.

For each state:
>>Montana
-more liberal than you would expect
-vast distances and not close to ANYTHING
-fairly cold

More gloom to add. The natural carrying capacity of the “redoubt” is very low. The portions of it that have farming require major oil inputs to continue. If a civil war breaks out that region will not be able to feed itself and be relatively easy to isolate militarily. Not a good redoubt.

There are extensive mountains in all three states where a skilled person or group could hide from any military for years. If you graduated Ranger School, or have extensive mountain hiking and hunting experience, it’s worth knowing about. Someone from any normal background will not survive those mountains for more than a week or so unless regularly resupplied.

The area around Sun Valley, Idaho is absolutely covered in second homes of super wealthy. If any sort of civil unrest happens it’s likely to be overrun by some combination of police, bodyguards, and private military contractors. Not a place I want to be.

Finally, a suggestion to anyone looking to relocate – some other areas to look into are Alaska (RE’s area north of Anchorage, the Mat-Su valley), nicer parts of the Appalachians, the Ozarks, and anywhere along the Canadian border except Ohio, PA and New York.

Bea, I made my own move to a different remote area and I’m loving it. Simply being out of the big cities is great. I’m just trying to help people avoid unrealistic expectations. From a survivability standpoint the Ozarks and southern Appalachians are probably the best, except for the ability to resist hostility from DC. Alaska is probably the best for that, but if DC weakens then Alaska might find itself occupied by or fighting off China and Russia. No place is perfect, pick the set of strengths and weaknesses you like.

John Angelo says:

“If you were going to relocate, what is everyone’s thoughts on the “American Redoubt” of Montana, Idaho, and/or Wyoming?”

Sheridan, Wyoming is my #1 pick. It’s one of America’s hidden gems. The Northern Neck of Idaho is #2. Kalispell, Montana is so-so. Here in Arizona, take a look at Prescott, Payson and the Mormon town of Snowflake (it was founded by Arizona Senator Jeff Flake’s ancestors). Their elevation give them some nippy days in winter, but absolutely gorgeous weather spring through fall. All my recommendations include friendly people at absolutely no extra charge.

July 13, 2015 9:25 pm

John, not to be down on Sheridan but it’s 131 miles from Billings, the nearest city of any size, and 149 miles from Casper (which is smaller but the other nearest “city”). Billings is OK but not great, with a definite redneck/roughneck feel to it. Even Cheyenne, which isn’t close, doesn’t offer a great range of services. Having moved to a city three times that size but otherwise about equally remote, do yourself a favor and thoroughly investigate things like health care availability, quality and affordability. I’m 3 miles from the largest hospital in the region and I’m still contemplating going 200+ miles away for better health care in certain instances. Sheridan is probably a great place to hide in the worst possible fast collapse scenarios, but you may find it challenging in a slow collapse or even very slow slide situation.

N.B. I don’t know Sheridan personally but have been in and around many of the other towns in that region.

Persnickety, I’ve always lived in Virginia (aside from grad school) so those are good things you bring to mind that I haven’t given much consideration. I ruled out Idaho and Montana on the basis of your previous posts. We have a great hospital in my town (as well as plenty of water, greenery, cattle, orchards, and deer) and am an hour from every amenity the wealthy DC suburbs have to offer. We’re only minutes from Wild and Wonderful West Virginia, which would make a beautiful retreat from the civilized world (as long as you’re self sufficient).

Persnickety
Persnickety
July 13, 2015 10:49 pm

John, if you like Virginia I would seriously consider the extreme western ends of North and South Carolina, rural Tennessee, and the Ozarks. I wouldn’t go any farther south than the Ozarks, personally. All parts of West Virginia that I’ve been through (including fairly rural parts) are like a bustling metro area compared to 99% of Wyoming. I like Wyoming, just be aware that it’s mostly extreme wilderness, with a few small towns / tiny cities thrown in. And if oil or electricity get interrupted you will have no food, water, or heat (there’s little forest and it’s not near the cities).

If you have a high degree of cold tolerance I would again suggest you explore the Canadian border states (MN, WI, MI, VT, NH, ME) as a possibility. It’s no place for people who can’t take a lot of snow and cold, though.

Zara said:

1) YES, and very important to know.
2) Not really, not any more. But it does have a lot uneducated, unemployed white folk who can create other problems. Did I mention meth?
3) Not so much any more, even in Utah. However I have a very, VERY bad impression of Mormon-area politics and social norms from repeated exposure, and I would tend to avoid any predominantly Mormon area for that reason.

John, if you like the idea of the “redoubt” area I would make your first scouting trip to northern Idaho, focusing on Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint. Other than the minor social issues it’s a beautiful area, one that actually has water and forests, and the winters aren’t terribly harsh (compared to parts of Montana and Wyoming, for instance). You also have Spokane quite nearby, which isn’t a great city but is big enough to have 99% of your city needs for health care, specialty shopping, other services, etc. It would be a long but feasible commute from some decent parts of Idaho if you need to work a regular job that’s only found in a bigger city. If you are retiring or otherwise can be in a small town, Sandpoint is quite nice.

At one time that area had been home to a small but vocal group of white supremacists, but they are somewhere between dormant and extinct now, so it wouldn’t scare me off unless you are a gay Jewish NAMBLA-member banker. (And even then, you probably wouldn’t be singled out so much.) It is a mostly white area with a significant Native American population. I have not felt or read about much friction between the whites and Indians in that area.

Do try to get an understanding of Idaho politics though, they are pretty crazy there. Though probably not any crazier than in Kansas or parts of SC.

Thanks star.

I have cheated death a time or two in vehicles. Sometimes I figure in parallel universes I did ot make it, such was my extreme luck.

Once, driving along an interstate, and in the inside lane passing a big rig, just as I passed the truck, I hit a patch of ice in my Mustang, which sent it into a spin in front of the big rig, which immediately locked up the brakes as I was doing a series of 360s in front of him. I could hear the airbrakes engage full force as he tried to keep the rig from running over the top of me as I spun in his path. I spun across his lane, and went toward the guard rail. I knew immediately if I hit the guardrail, it would slow me down, and that would be it – the truck would run over me for sure.

I spun all the way up to the rail – had to be within an inch or two, and came along side of it perfectly parallel, and then the spinning miraculously stopped, with me sailing along it without ever touching it. After a moment or two, the car reversed it spin, now spinning the other direction, spun me back across the truck’s lane, back across my original lane, and into the snow in the median, where I came to a soft rest.

Seriously, I should have been dead as a dodo. No way known I should have survived that. And there was totally zero that I could do – at least that I knew to do. Once I was spinning, I had no idea what to try – hit the brakes, hit the accelerator, etc. So I just spun until I stopped. and survived it.

The moral of that story is NEVER take a Mustang GT Boss out into weather where there are slick roads. Never did that again.

DOJ’s Newest Statistics on Race and Violent Crime
And Some People Aren’t Going to Like Their Findings

http://suckersonparade.blogspot.com/

This table can be used for a number of interesting calculations. First, we find that during the 2012/2013 period, blacks committed an average of 486,945 violent crimes against whites, whereas whites committed only 99,403 such crimes against blacks. This means blacks were the attackers in 84.5 percent of the violent crimes involving blacks and whites. This figure is consistent with reports from 2008, the last year DOJ released similar statistics. Perhaps not coincidentally, that was the year Mr. Obama was elected president.

Persnickety, I’ve made a few week-long visits over the past year to western North Carolina (Asheville and the surrounding region) and eastern Tennessee and liked both areas quite a bit. I went to Clemson in South Carolina for grad school and didn’t get to take advantage of Lake Hartwell (62 grad credits in two years will do that to you) but enjoyed the area as well. Never been to the Ozarks, so I’ll have to look into it. I just did some research into Coeur d’Alene though and it looks amazing! That’s a fantastic recommendation. Thanks for the continued input. Can’t wait to check it out.
