YES, Yes, yes. This cartoon say it all. Maybe people are waking up to what I understood 40 years ago.

What kind of change did the ‘Tea Party’ smucks achieve??? I must have missed it.

George Carlin was right.

Well, if people chose not to vote, you’ll see voting made mandatory (just as it is here in Australia). That was “The Law” ensures our “superiors” can claim legitimacy.

The fact that it may be a central democratic right NOT to vote has been carefully swept under the carpet . . . . . . . .

Phil

I recently read about another country — I believe it was Brazil — where voting is mandatory. What happens is that people start writing in bullshit names. In one case, a rhinoceros was elected to city council!!

Stucky – can’t do that here Mate. the forms are all pre-printed and there’s no room for “creativity”. Not that people don’t do their own thing – but such “informal” votes are not counted.

Unless you vote for one of the “approved candidates” your vote will not be counted – “democracy” at work.

Another annoying thing here is that the “Polling System” is entirely paper-based. EVERY polling station has a list of names for all local eligible voters in hard copy; likewise the system used reams of paper vote registration sheets (two lots – Local and State for National elections), and the State candidate list is an A1 size sheet. Whilst paper is recyclable, one would have thought we’d got to the stage of maybe (just maybe) going for a computerised system, but no. Got to keep the little bureaucrats who man the Stations employed, and so it goes . . . . .

The fewer people that vote the more power each one that does vote has.

You may want to opt out of the system, but the system will not opt out of you.

Voting gives you a degree of power to determine how much it affects you life and how, not voting gives that power to someone else in your place.

Your choice, do as you please.

Phil from Oz–What you do is spend 8 hrs in the voting booth because you have a hard time making up your mind. How would that work if maybe 1,000 did it? More than one way to skin a Roo.

Absolutely. Fucking. Clueless. And. Brainwashed.

Greetings,

I’m torn on this one. As an anarchist, I do not support having a Republic though I’d gladly support a Direct Democracy whereas the people directly write and vote on the laws they would like to have. Some argue that a Direct Democracy would last all of 10 minutes before the people attempted to vote themselves rich but I say that feedback loops where cause and effect can be seen and seen quickly might be the remedy that we all need.

As it stands, I can’t see where voting changes anything.

Sucky says: “I recently read about another country — I believe it was Brazil — where voting is mandatory. What happens is that people start writing in bullshit names. In one case, a rhinoceros was elected to city council!!”

That’s what you get for reading only comic books all the time. Countries with mandatory voting only require people to actually go vote. It doesn’t require, nor indeed even leave room, for them to make-up fictitious candidates.

Speaking of voting for rhinos, in your own collapsing kraphole of a country there’s currently a potential presidential candidate named DEEZ NUTS actually included on the polling lists.
AND he’s doing quite well!

I don’t vote. I want my conscience clean.

But even non-voting is pointless. As long as three assholes go to the polls and cast a 2:1 vote some dork will claim a 66 % majority and declare himself democratically legitimized.

Consent of the governed, my ass.

I hope Hope provides a running commentary on the TBP summit in NYC. I want to hear the moment Stucky declares himself the judge of the beer chugging contest.

@NicklethroweR,

It seems to me that you wax nostalgic for something that is undeserving:

“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.” —attributed (perhaps erroneously) to Ben Franklin.

I’ll take liberty.

Democracy is two men and a woman voting on whether or not to have sex.
