I wonder what this “rescue” by New York’s finest cost the taxpayer. Fire engines, ambulances, cop cars and dozens of police and firemen all getting paid to hoist a land whale out of her window because she has eaten herself to such a size she can’t fit through a doorway any longer. You can be sure she is on SSDI, Medicare, SNAP, and dozens of other government freebies. Her apartment is probably Section 8, so the window removal will be covered by the taxpayer too. Including this rescue, I’d estimate this land whale costs the taxpayers of NY and the U.S. at least $1 million per year.

Paramedics rushed to the woman’s second-floor apartment on Fifth Ave. near E. 111th St. — just a block from Central Park — about 1:15 p.m. officials said.
They treated the girthy gal, but quickly realized that her size prevented them from getting her out the front door, sources with knowledge of the incident said.
Firefighters were called in to remove a window and perform a “high angle operation,” officials said.

First thing came to mind when I read this was that scene from Hill Street Blues with the cow being removed from an upper floor of a tenement building.
Anyone want to guess what the “extraction” of this land whale cost taxpayers? Look at the equipment and number of firefighters/rescue personnel. And we won’t get into the subsequent medical bills…Oh joy, more self-induced misery that everyone else with the wherewithal gets to pay for!
The bill for the rescue, if viewed on a ‘per pound’ basis, shouldn’t be too bad.

I have one interesting fat guy story.
When I worked in the trades I renovated a crematorium with new paint and wallcoverings because the entire interior was smoke and fire damaged.
The head cremator had a very obese dead guy, the fat content in his body caused a flare up that created a flame 20-25 feet high out of the exhaust flume, this was made more spectacular because it was at night and the crematorium was along a busy stretch of US31.
He got a call from the fire department asking what was going on, he panicked and pulled the guy partially out of the furnace before the burn was complete.
Can you imagine, a big fat blob of burning flesh, snapping and popping, and not enough baking soda to smother the grease fire so while the overhead sprinklers did their job he pulled the pin on a fire extinguisher and coated the deceased with CO2 before the fire department got there.
I couldn’t find anyone else that wanted help me, it took about two weeks to scrape the burned wallpaper, seal everything, repaint, and re-wallpaper.
All the while sharing the space with a variety of strangers that were also dead and awaiting their turn to burn.
The creamator would lite the furnace and leave me alone, he would return later to retrieve the remains of one body and start another one once the furnace cooled enough.
There is some ash left, also a lot of large bones and the skull, those are put through a crusher and grinder. I’m not positive the bones crushed are 100% the bones of the same person as the creamator seemed to save his crushing for later…..
Okay, I’ll be sensitive, but I’m not gonna blubber over her condition.

In former life I was a FF/PM. The biggest human I ever dealt with was 650+lbs. It was on the ground floor he had been sitting in the same chair for so long that his skin and the cushions had actually kind of melted together..
It took 2 engine crews 2 rescue crews, a handful of cops to keep the crowd back. They got excited when we chain sawed the fence down. And eventually a big ass tow truck when the rescue got stuck in the yard.
Then we all got to go to the hospital to help them move him into the ER and then to a room….
I to this day think about this call and just shake my head and laugh. Firefighters are problem solvers. To us it was like a big, really big rubic cube…
I do have some horror stories, as long as someone sings me to sleep.
My largest Patient so far was a “mere” 245kg: By comparison Madame here is over 360kg (i.e. 50% heavier – just over a third of a tonne!!)
She actually exceeds the safe weight limit for almost all of our “bariatric” equipment (most is OK up to 250kg, some is OK up to 300kg).
The most weight our CT imaging systems can “carry” is 280kg (same for our two MRIs, and the CT-PET imaging system). I’m told that the “very” big have been imaged by Sydney Zoological Park, and the quality of imaging (CT only mind you) is actually OK. One of the Veterinary Schools has a PET imager that can do up to 350kg (PET only – dual-head ADAC system) but the resolution isn’t that great owing to signal attenuation . . . . . .
I had to deal with this crazy old guy who kept fighting everybody from his bed…. 500 pounds. Ridiculous.

Moving someone like that is a real risk of injury. I had a teacher who had to quit being a paramedic because of a shoulder injury from a obese patient.

My compassion and empathy are for those who have problems no fault of there own, those affected by other people’s faults, or people who are trying to fix or handle their problems. Excellent rant BamBam. I have no time either for those who can’t help themselves. Everyone has challenges in life. Some decide to ignore them and take easy way out by making it someone else’s problem.
Right now my daughter in law is going thru a bankruptcy because according to her she wasn’t taught in high school of the perils of credit cards. Apparently that is supposed to excuse poor financial planning in her part. We usually get a phone call once a week, sort of a guilt trip I suppose. With her hoping I think, that my wife and I will bail her out. Funny thing is we don’t make a whole lot more than they do. Last week after her announcement of BK she went on to complain about her Dad who makes 6 figures not helping either.
