If the IOC served in a voluntary capacity I’m sure they could give out real gold and silver medals. Instead, the IOC hands out mere trinkets for a lifetime worth of hard work and dedication while enriching themselves and bankrupting host cities in the process.

Who actually makes the medals?

18 million dollars is, unfortunately, a drop in the barrel compared to how much all this costs. But, I think a fake gold metal is perfect for our fake money world. I have come to despise the Olympics and refuse to watch them.

The olympic gold medal is probably vermeil. If it was gold filled it would have to be 5% gold of the total weight to qualify, so it’s just gold plated. A scrap dealer would probably pay about $240 for it.

“Real gold medals have not been handed out since the 1912 Olympics”. I wonder what could have happened that made them hesitant to hand out gold after 1912? I’m sure it had nothing to do with the founding of the Federal Reserve in 1913.

Multi-gold medal winners probably have millions of potential dollars in endorsements. So that “outweighs” the lack of real gold in the medal (pun intended).
