What are your thoughts on censorship by the social media “giants”?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/11/15/twitter-suspends-alt-right-accounts/93943194/

SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter suspended a number of accounts associated with the alt-right movement, the same day the social media service said it would crack down on hate speech.

Among those suspended was Richard Spencer, who runs an alt-right think tank and had a verified account on Twitter.

The alt-right, a loosely organized group that espouses white nationalism, emerged as a counterpoint to mainstream conservatism and has flourished online. Spencer has said he wants blacks, Asians, Hispanics and Jews removed from the U.S.

Twitter on Tuesday removed Spencer’s verified account, @RichardBSpencer, that of his think tank, the National Policy Institute @npiamerica, and his online magazine @radixjournal.

“This is corporate Stalinism,” Spencer told The Daily Caller News Foundation. In a YouTube video, entitled Knight of the Long Knives, an apparent reference to the purge of Nazi leaders in 1934 to consolidate Adolf Hitler’s power, Spencer said Twitter had engaged in a coordinated effort to wipe out alt-right Twitter.

“I am alive physically but digitally speaking there has been execution squads across the alt right,” he said. “There is a great purge going on and they are purging people based on their views.”

In a statement, Twitter said: “The Twitter Rules prohibit targeted abuse and harassment, and we will suspend accounts that violate this policy.”

It declined to comment specifically on the suspensions, which included the accounts of Paul Town, Pax Dickinson, Ricky Vaughn and John Rivers.

Twitter was the platform of choice for the campaign of President-elect Donald Trump and the alt-right political movement that embraced him. The alt-right used social media to spread its cause of white supremacy, operating largely unchecked by social media giants Twitter and Facebook.

Heidi Beirich, spokeswoman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, told USA TODAY that the center had asked Twitter to remove more than 100 accounts of white supremacists who violated Twitter’s terms of service. She also pointed to two alt-right accounts that had been verified by Twitter, including Spencer’s.

Twitter says it verifies an account by giving it a blue check mark when “it is determined to be an account of public interest.” Twitter launched the feature in 2009 after celebrities complained about people impersonating them on the social media service.

“We are encouraged by the decisions taken by Twitter. Now it is a matter of whether they are carried out,” Beirich said. “Obviously, well-known white supremacists violate these terms of service and we are glad it appears that Twitter has chosen to step up on these issues.”

Twitter has suspended alt-right accounts in the past but never so many at once.

In one of the highest-profile bans, Twitter removed the account of Milo Yiannopoulos, a technology editor at the conservative news site Breitbart in July. He had engaged in a campaign of abuse in which hundreds of anonymous Twitter accounts bombarded Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones with racist and sexist taunts. Before banning Yiannopoulos, Twitter stripped him of his verified status.

Spencer said he supported Yiannopoulos and didn’t think he should have been banned from Twitter. But, he said in his YouTube video, “Milo was engaging in something that could be called harassment.”

“The fact is that I, and a number of other people who have just got banned, weren’t even trolling,” he said. “I was using Twitter just like I always use Twitter, to give people some updates and maybe to comment on a news story here and there.”

This is not censorship. It is a private service with terms of service. No one has been censored. If you have to depend on this twatter thing to reach an audience just fucking die already.

Now imagine no opposing views on this twatter thing. With no traffic it will become another prodigy BBS.

They hold themselves out as a de facto commons for public discourse. To then censor the speech of people they (Twitspace, etc.) doesn’t like, exposes this claim as hypocritical (at best).

Twitter, Google, Facebook are at once surveillance tools for the government and corporations, and a medium for pushing propaganda/advertising from these same entities onto their users.

The censoring of opinions which are not in line with leftist doctrine is an open admission of their complete failure to shape public opinion – which is nice to see.

It really exposes the complete lack of effectiveness of these platforms as an advertising medium: you might want to re-think wasting money on advertising with them.

Silicon Valley is in the tank for the globalists. Quit supporting them. I’m sure there are bright young men and women among you capable of visualizing competing platforms.

They have effective monopolies, even if of their own creation, and they should be regulated as common carriers (or public utilities), and prohibited from any restrictions or censorship based on viewpoints.

“Spencer has said he wants blacks, Asians, Hispanics and Jews removed from the U.S.”
….that is a stupid and unrealistic position

“This is corporate Stalinism,”
….I agree

The ‘normal’ conservatives need a major internet media source.

I can’t decide whether they’ve become public utilities or are still private companies that should be free to ban whoever they want. One thing I am sure is that all of the social media and search companies are riding a tiger. Until now, they’ve put themselves in service of liberal political causes and candidates. They’ve voluntarily taken actions to suppress unwanted speech. The time will come when the strong government that they so approve of will just take them over. The government has the guns, and Facebook, Twitter, Google and YouTube will eventually do as they’re told.

The problem is not that giants behave that way. The problems is that giants exist. Monopolies are inherently bad. The left and totalitarian right (fascism) would love to regulate them, or declare them “public service”.

Real free people should vow to atomize them

Let’s do something. Let’s think of “a social protocol”, like an evolution of syndication, where you can host your public social information and have control of what a “friend”, “publication”, “picture”, “tag”, “short comm (tweet)”, “verification” or whatever other feature you want in a social media.
And you use the social media client of your choice to follow the public information of whoever you want. A lot of things to work out. But that is how internet works

My apologies for the shameless plug but this is what I wrote in part of my pre election essay and I think it is appropriate.

Crossing The Rubicon of Corruption

Remove the firewood from under the pot.
For those who believe this is a fight I highly recommend spending a few minutes to read a short Chinese text titled Thirty-Six Stratagems. Each one on its own seems obvious but reading through them makes one aware of how our enemies use these stratagems right there in front of our faces. It also offers suggestions on how to defeat them.

Chapter 4 of Thirty-Six Stratagems is titled Chaos Stratagems. The first stratagem simply states: Remove The Fuel From Under The Pot. The idea being to take away your enemies ability to fight. Like how Allied air power specifically targeted German ball bearing factories throughout World War 2.

An arena of this fight where the globalists have a clear advantage is on social media. Consequently they would prefer that the fight be waged in cyberspace. Don’t let your enemy chose the battle space. That advantage needs to be taken away not only because participants are manipulated but because the manipulators profit from anyone who holds an account.

I do not participate in any social media or I would be canceling my accounts as I have learned that they are my opponents in this fight. If they are profiting from my account then I would be a fool to allow that.

I do love to read comment boards though. The reality of the conversations makes the paid trolls stand out like the first undercover cop to ever go to a rave.

This is why I denounced the alt-right , it turns into getting rid of the joos and white supremacy. I was just sick of Oreo and having free shit for the FSA. I don’t support us turning into 1933 Germany and I would point out that some who are leaders of the alt-right are minions of the Zionists and Israel.

Like I’ve said before,I don’t want anything to do with the white supremacists nor do i want to be labeled as supporting them. If others want to support it then that is entirely up to that person. We can oppose problems with our country without becoming extreme.

You don’t have to have anything to do with the white supremacists. I think you are making the mistake of buying the left’s narrative that you have to have everything that is on the menu when it should be a buffet that you can pick and choose. The left conveniently lumps all the deplorables into one basket. That Hillary speech was probably the most truthful moment of election campaign in exposing the real intentions of the left.

Every election it is the same thing. David Duke comes out and endorses a Republican and the media goes full potato. The left doesn’t want moderates to talk to, they extremes to combat. The Frankfurt School textbooks outline how it is supposed to work.

Make debate impossible.
Fear then replaces reason.
Match starts the fire.

They are trained to be SA Brown Shirts. Nothing more, nothing less. They are defeated and instead of rallying behind Trump they protest in the streets. Their intention now is to make the country ungovernable. All the time feeling righteous in their indignation.

RiNS- If you want to support the alt-right that is absolutely up to you.. If it expands in scope to one day they start picking up people at 3:00am and nobody sees them again, I have a problem.

I don’t Twitter or use FB so I really don’t care if they completely shut the whole social media circus down, we were better off before it came about. If the alt-right is unhappy then create a independent media outlet to do what you do.

Read what I said again. I didn’t say I support those extreme right wing positions. All I said was that the left lumps everyone on right in that same basket of deplorables.

Steve Bannon the editor of Breitbart is getting raked over the coals right now because of things written by other people. I read Breitbart everyday but that in and of itself doesn’t make me a white nationalist.

I haven’t seen a definition for alt-right that encompasses all the various entities that make it up.

The right doesn’t bother.
The left doesn’t care.

Question: Can you really call something that if it dropped off the face of the earth life would go on just fine a ” monopoly “. I say FUCKNO

Social media is a time wasting construct that sells eyeballs for money. The product they are selling is YOU. The fact that facebook has a market cap of stupidtothemoon does not change the fact that it is basically loony toons. If it died everyone else would live.

Get over the censorship issue on a company owned toy. It does no apply. Saying it does gives these time wasting sites importance where none exists.

Hate speech is in the ear/eye of the beholder. Who is to say? If Twitter wants to ban certain speech it is their right, but their users can also ban their use and move on to some other platform. Which is what most center to right politically oriented people should be doing with Google which is a much bigger problem.

How did alt-right-media become white supremacist?

Does alt-right-media comment on frustrations related to
crazy far-left-media? And people? Groups?

I say abandon any platform that doesn’t work for you.
