Washington Post Names Drudge, Zero Hedge, & Ron Paul As Anti-Clinton “Sophisticated Russian Propaganda Tools”

Tyler Durden's picture

The desperate flailing of a mainstream-media struggling through the five stages of grief continues as no lesser unbiased foundation of the fourth estate than The Washington Post pushes ahead with its “fake news, blame the Russians” narrative for why their candidate failed so miserably.

Citing “two teams of independent researchers” who found “Russia’s increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery…echoed and amplified right-wing sites across the Internet as they portrayed Clinton as a criminal,” WaPo names Drudge, Zero Hedge, and The Ron Paul Institute among the “useful idiots” that true American patriots should be wary of.

“The way that this propaganda apparatus supported Trump was equivalent to some massive amount of a media buy,” said the executive director of PropOrNot, who spoke on the condition of anonymity with the Post.

“It was like Russia was running a super PAC for Trump’s campaign.”

In the wake of the election, fake news and its spread on social media has come into the spotlight. President Obama denounced the attention garnered by false information last week, saying: “If we are not serious about facts and what’s true and what’s not … if we can’t discriminate between serious arguments and propaganda, then we have problems.” And as The Hill reports, a sophisticated Russian propaganda effort helped fuel the spread of fake news during the election cycle, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

Two groups of independent researchers found that Russia employed thousands of botnets, human internet “trolls” and networks of Web sites and social media accounts to inject false content into online political talk and amplify posts from right-wing sites.

“They want to essentially erode faith in the U.S. government or U.S. government interests,” said Clint Watts, a fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute who co-authored a report about Russian propaganda.

“This was their standard mode during the Cold War. The problem is that this was hard to do before social media.”

The Washington Post states – without irony – that there are now scientific studies that show how the Russians influenced the 2016 election

The flood of “fake news” this election season got support from a sophisticated Russian propaganda campaign that created and spread misleading articles online with the goal of punishing Democrat Hillary Clinton, helping Republican Donald Trump and undermining faith in American democracy, say independent researchers who tracked the operation.

Russia’s increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery — including thousands of botnets, teams of paid human “trolls,” and networks of Web sites and social-media accounts — echoed and amplified right-wing sites across the Internet as they portrayed Clinton as a criminal hiding potentially fatal health problems and preparing to hand control of the nation to a shadowy cabal of global financiers. The effort also sought to heighten the appearance of international tensions and promote fear of looming hostilities with nuclear-armed Russia.

Two teams of independent researchers found that the Russians exploited American-made technology platforms to attack U.S. democracy at a particularly vulnerable moment, as an insurgent candidate harnessed a wide range of grievances to claim the White House. The sophistication of the Russian tactics may complicate efforts by Facebook and Google to crack down on “fake news,” as they have vowed to do after widespread complaints about the problem.

The report from PropOrNot, provided to the Post, identifies more than 200 websites that routinely pushed Russian propaganda to at least 15 million Americans, and found that false stories pushed on Facebook were viewed more than 213 million times. You may be surprised by some of the sites on the list (it seems even satirical fakes news sites are propagandists too)…

So in other words, any and every one who is anything but a liberal drone is now a Russian plant? McCarthy would be proud.

As “the scientists” explain, reporting facts is tantamount to being a “useful idiot.”

Please note that our criteria are behavioral. That means the characteristics of the propaganda outlets we identify are motivation-agnostic.

For purposes of this definition it does not matter whether the sites listed here are being knowingly directed and paid by Russian intelligence officers, or whether they even knew they were echoing Russian propaganda at any particular point: If they meet these criteria, they are at the very least acting as bona-fide “useful idiots” of the Russian intelligence services, and are worthy of further scrutiny.

Which reminded us of @SarcasmRobot’s artist’s impression of this sheer idiocy…

For further color on “Useful Idiots”, Jim Quinn uncovered the following video by a former KGB member Yuri Bezmenov who defected to Canuckistan in 1970. In it he details how the Marxist/Leninist’s planned to conquer the west from within without ever firing a shot. How well do you think their plan is working? At about 7:20 the host, G. Edward Griffin, asks Yuri “What do we do?” (to counter the takeover) and we were more than a little surprised by his response…

Since the election and even a little before, many have pushed the idea that Trump needs to concentrate on aggressively educating people to the evils that surround us… it appears that is the only way to right back against the tyranny of the fourth estate.

Finally (and no this is not Friday Humor), this is how the scientists described Zero Hedge…

ZeroHedge qualifies as “dark gray” propaganda, systematically deceiving its civilian audiences for foreign political gain.

Articles from ZeroHedge are frequently reposted by other sites, but appear on ZeroHedge first — the site’s authors are driving and shaping the stories, not merely reacting to them. An analysis of web traffic patterns and linking backs this up: ZeroHedge has a prominent place within the network of pro-Russia news and propaganda outlets.

We at PropOrNot rate it: Five Shadies.

“Five Shadies”?!

We can only hope that this kind of desperate narrative spewing only accelerates the demise of the mainstream media’s efforts to maintain credibility and control of the American mindset (which they so obviously lost with their lies during the presidential campaign).

Leaving aside the sheer ridiculousness of the WaPo story, these asshats don’t even bother to ask why Russians preferred Trump to Clinton. Because Trump would turn a blind eye for a country with twice the area and half the population of the US to invade the Baltics? Because Russia needs more land? Maybe Russians just didn’t want the war with America being promoted by American neocons like Hillary.

Maybe because nobody knows who the real Hillary is?
The left wing Hillary who said that she would ban all fracking & ban all oil drilling on public lands would be a godsend to the Russians as their biggest generator of cash is energy exports. The treasonous Hillary that allowed America’s uranium to be sold to Russia should make them love her.
So why wouldn’t they want her?
Are Russia & we right wingers hallucinating when we saw Hillary call multiple times for a US imposed no fly zone over Syria, which would be an act of war if we shot down a Russian or Syrian plane?Btw,I didn’t read the article but I just saw an article where we had a kia in Syria.
When she talks about NATO troops in the Ukraine & the Baltics?
As to the websites on that list,gaia.com?yoga,relaxation,peace & love, mother earth, blah, blah blah-yep,they are really right wing subversives.

The many sites on that list that I am familiar with range from good to excellent, and most certainly are head and shoulders above the WaPo itself.

Thanks to WaPo for posting that list. As I’m usually limited for time, I frequent three sites for my morning news, Drudge, ZH and TBP. But I see a time when I’ll have the time to add another two or three.

You might want to question ZH’s motivation and more importantly integrity. See my comment below.

WaPo is butthurt that so many people no longer believe THEIR propaganda – of which this article is an excellent example.
The MSM shot its’ wad pushing Hillary at us with an uncritical fervor bordering on religious zealotry. That we refuse any further dealings with it is just saving time.

You are a great writer, Absolutely terrific, in fact.

Your ability to convert raw factual data into meaningful information is second to none.

And, therein, lies the problem. You are too cerebral. None of your articles refer to Hillary by her proper name, Hillcunt. Start with that. I mean, why kind of joint is this when you can’t even get on the Washington comPost shitlist?

Yeah Jim, but you get a big shout out (with link!) in the middle of the article. Not quite the same as being outed as an agent of the kremlin like Stockman, PCR and Ron Paul, but you’ll have to make do.

“Citing two teams of independent researchers…” —article

A. Independent researchers
B. A kneegrow with a library card
C. A smart Democrat.

Q: What do “A”, and “B”, and “C” have in common?
A: Neither has been spotted in America in over three decades.

This is bullshit on top of bullshit on top of bullshit. The Jim Quinn reference comes directly from a post I hacked together last night that admin published this morning here:

A MELTDOWN OF EVIL + CONQUERED FROM WITHIN

In the zerohedge piece above it says:
“For further color on “Useful Idiots”, Jim Quinn uncovered the following video by a former KGB member Yuri Bezmenov who defected to Canuckistan in 1970. In it he details how the Marxist/Leninist’s planned to conquer the west from within without ever firing a shot. How well do you think their plan is working? At about 7:20 the host, G. Edward Griffin, asks Yuri “What do we do?” (to counter the takeover) and we were more than a little surprised by his response…”

and

“Since the election and even a little before, many have pushed the idea that Trump needs to concentrate on aggressively educating people to the evils that surround us… it appears that is the only way to right back against the tyranny of the fourth estate.”

Compare that to what I ACTUALLY wrote:
“In the comments to that story I found this little nine minute, gem of a video by a former KGB member Yuri Bezmenov who defected to Canuckistan in 1970. In it he details how the Marxist/Leninist’s planned to conquer the west from within without ever firing a shot. How well do you think their plan is working?

Since the (s)election and even a little before, I’ve been harping on the idea that Trump needs to concentrate on aggressively educating people to the evils that surround us. At about 7:20 the host, G. Edward Griffin, asks Yuri “What do we do?” (to counter the takeover) and I was more than a little surprised by his response.”

See the differences? See how they omitted, modified and added to what was ACTUALLY written? So they take something admin never wrote, twist it around to suit their story. There’s a bunch of disingenuous hacks writing for zerohedge and the only explanation for it is propaganda. I don’t know their motives or intentions but honesty is not one of them. Seems to me they proved that zerohedge does have an agenda. I can’t say if it’s Russia centric but it’s an agenda nonetheless.

On top of that they credit (blame) something I wrote as something admin wrote. I don’t give a shit about credit for myself but admin better not take a bullet for me. Zerohedge may get wider exposure for TBP and Jim’s original articles but I’d have serious reservations about their motivations.

To be totally honest I’ve never trusted Zerohedge all that much. They are not one of my goto sites. The majority of ZH stuff I read is what gets cross posted here. I’m not sure what sort of qualifications one needs to appear as Tyler Durden but a couple of stories I’ve read *about* ZH elsewhere have not impressed me.

The only time I visit ZH is when verifying things I’ve read outside of TBP that reference a ZH piece. Just the fact that they so often credit and quote the wrong people for TBP articles they crosspost over there means they are sloppy at best. They need a talented editor over there with integrity.

I/S
Not so long ago I posted that ZH is Russian. I have also posted for a long time about the pederasses and on both accounts was treated as a crackpot. Guess you all have to study for yourselves but I will say that if you post again that Trump should educate folks about such I am going to blow chunks.
There is a fairly accurate article about nazis, pederasses and Blackwater mercs over at VT which will give you a good idea who Ms. Devos (Trump’s pick for Sec. Of Education) and her connections to a miriad of scary groups.

You have a dog named Chunks? Well get some chapstick….because that’s going to be one happy mutt.

My apologies for missing what I’m sure were some riveting comments filled with nothing but facts but I don’t have time to read every post plus comments while posting comments of my own all day everyday. I’m busy producing things to pay your social security. A little gratitude would be appreciated.

I don’t actually expect Trump will do anything I have in mind. I’m “pre-disappointed” with everything. It’s just how positive pessimism works……expect the worst while hoping for the best.

Once upon a time ( 40 years ago ) the Washington post was a prestigious newspaper that had real and unbiased journalists. Slowly over time the reputation has become soiled. The content dumbed down . The sections got thinner and thinner and editorials slanted to the left. The final nail nail in the coffin for this dying publication was when Bezos assumed ownership. And just like anything that gets controlled by the sick liberals it has become a sad debased joke. But even through that long painful decline I as a loyal customer always kept up my subscription . However this past election cycle has finally pushed me over the edge. Cancelled the subscription and with great satisfaction took a hacksaw and cut down the box with the Posts logo on it that sat in front of my house. It had become an embarrassment for me to have that in front of my home . They still occasionally deliver a Sunday paper that they throw in my driveway in hope that they can lure me back in their evil clutches. I wouldn’t even wipe my ass with it. It goes straight into the garbage can. Americans are in the process of giving a big fuck you to the mainstream media err, propaganda. So desperate are these evil , vile creatures that they are like a cornered rat and lash out with rediculous claimes about Russians and fake news and such . Useless and worthless scum they truly are.

WaPo’s opinion on who’s “real” and who’s “fake” is spectacularly irrelevant.

As they will be, in a few years or less.

Donald Trump, send your updates to TBP, ZH, Breitbart and Drudge! Make these MSM idiots get their news from alt-right news sources! And point out how often they get it WRONG, even with TBP-ZH-BB-DR to show them how to do it!
