– Sold tickets to carnival rides at 5 years old. I was able to make change for any denomination bill at that time, and could accommodate any number of tickets at once. I became a draw card due to the novelty of it. I of course could only work but very short stretches, but remember enjoying it. People would line up to test whether the kid could make change for fives, tens, twenties.
– Assistant at carnival games from age 5. I would collect the fees and generally assist.
– House to house soliciting odd jobs from age 8
– Picking berries, beans, fruit from age 10
– Neighborhood lawn mowing from age 12
– Winter roadside coffee stand from age 12
– Summer lemonade stand at carnivals from age 12

I have missed a few, I suspect. But as you can see, I have worked nearly all my life. The thought of a break, as some snowflakes now seem to have, is foreign to me – I always needed to make money. I did what I had to do. There was no other option. I have worked for money uninterrupted since I was 5. But I work less now than I used to.

I thought my list was rather unusual until I read some of the previous posts…thanks everyone for sharing your memories, and LLPOH for starting this thread.
I grew up in apartheid South Africa as a white person. So we had what we called then, a ‘garden boy’ that did almost all of the jobs you guys did when you were kids.
Now, before any SJW’s have a aneurysm, that’s just how it was – GFY and two points:

(70s-80s) was no joke and the pay was risible. Learned discipline, teamwork, swearing and

21-27 Studied electrical engineering at technical college – 6 mths study, 6 mths
apprentice work (total 4 yrs). I got a small cash stipend from the company for the last
two 6 mth periods of study. Happy days – I had cash to burn and beer was cheap. Most of my fellow students at the tech did not have this option. Once qualified, did Production line
work and later, programming of in-circuit pcb testing computers.
28-31 repair of IBM 3270 type terminals/printers, component level repairs.
32-34 servicing motor vehicle electrical test systems on production line. PC assembly.
35-37 field work – PC/printer repair. Network/cabling install etc.
38-41 Network admin for Fortune500 engineering Co. on multiple geographicaly dispersed
sites. High stress (1200 users idling, anyone?), long hours. Fun times.
42-45 Was outsourced from the above to a certain PoS three letter acronym computer Co.

46 to now various short term contract jobs. Trying my hand at a little futures trading from home – so far so good, meaning I’m breaking even.
At age 9 carried newspapers Monday thru Saturday 109 papers in all kinds of weather, rain, snow and summer heat. Did this until I was 12 then part-time as a substitute on other routs as needed.

Age 17 (1967) left home & Got out of the Army Enlisted in the Army and learned aircraft engine repair & overhaul.
Age 18 became an Army Paratrooper
Age 19 Vietnam
Age 20 (1970) Got out of the Army and Got married and helped new wife finish collage working as a convenience store manager.
Age 21 got a job in a steel foundry as a ladle man. I had a ladle that held 2 ½ ton of molten steel
Age 22 re-enlisted in the Army (It was safer than being a ladle man) went to the 82nd. Airborne Division.
Age 27 while still in the Army got my A&P ticket and started a small aircraft repair business. I also got my Private Pilot’s license at this time.
From 1980 to 2001 worked as an aircraft mechanic for various airlines and aviation companies. I had a commercial Pilots license with sea plane rating and flew briefly in the Alaskan bush.
1990 Went to auctioneer school, started my own auction company from scratch and did this part-time until 2001 when we went full time.
