QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.”

Erma Bombeck

“Here in Britain, of course, it’s Thank Fuck We Got Those Weird Jesus Bastards On The Boat Day”

Warren Ellis

“I like football. I find its an exciting strategic game. Its a great way to avoid conversation with your family at Thanksgiving.”

Craig Ferguson

“Thanksgiving Day, a function which originated in New England two or three centuries ago when those people recognized that they really had something to be thankful for — annually, not oftener — if they had succeeded in exterminating their neighbors, the Indians, during the previous twelve months instead of getting exterminated by their neighbors, the Indians. Thanksgiving Day became a habit, for the reason that in the course of time, as the years drifted on, it was perceived that the exterminating had ceased to be mutual and was all on the white man’s side, consequently on the Lord’s side; hence it was proper to thank the Lord for it and extend the usual annual compliments.”

Mark Twain

That video is so much tripe.

If you want to know the real reason for the colony’s survival you must read the journal of the Governor of the colony, William Bradford. The charter for the colony read much like the communist platform for a socialist utopia.

All items raised (animals and cops to be harvested) had to be placed in the common store to be distributed to all members of the colony equally. This, of course, is a recipe for disaster. If Bill grows two ears of corn and Bob grows four and both get three, two things happen. Bob resents that Bill is a freeloader and Bob says why work harder? This is why the colonist died because people refused to pay into a system that was not merit based no matter what their God might say. Once the socialist crap was abandoned and people were allowed to keep the efforts of their labor to trade for goods then the colony took off.

This is stated plainly in the journal of William Bradford, Squanto not withstanding.

Every time an attempt to implement a purely socialist system has been met with abject failure.

I know about his journal too and the affect that their in itial thoughts about communal living had on the group. However, the two stories are not mutually exclusive.
