Cooking, cleaning mums will be banned in advertisements across the UK from next year, following a study which claimed traditional gender roles are “harmful and outdated”.
The decision to tighten regulation was announced by the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) this week, after a report published in summer identified gender stereotypes in adverts as a driver of inequality between men and women.
“Wherever they appear or are reinforced, gender stereotypes can lead to mental, physical and social harm which can limit the potential of groups and individuals,” the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) alleged in its study.

Depictions deemed problematic include “family members creating a mess while a woman has sole responsibility for cleaning it up”, and adverts which “[suggest that] a specific activity is inappropriate for boys because it is stereotypically associated with girls, or vice-versa.”

Nanette Newman, an actress who appeared in 1980s Fairy Liquid commercials, told the Daily Mail the ban is “ridiculously over the top”.
“What a bizarre world we live in where the adverts I starred in might today be considered harmful, yet it’s considered perfectly acceptable for women to be shown on mainstream TV having sex,” she told the Mail.
While campaigns to change the view of society presented in advertisements is intended to increase equality, it may be having the effect of skewing representations in a different way. Breitbart London reported in August a major survey of major advertising companies in Britain which found that businesses are over-representing ethnic minorities and homosexual in their marketing in order to ward off accusations of bigotry.
The majority of 500 advertisers surveyed admitting producing campaigns which featured same-sex couples and non-traditional families even if doing so clashed with their brand identity, while half of respondents reported using fewer white people, who they said no longer represented “modern society”.

Campaigners last week demanded toy retailers reboot their catalogues to depict a world in which boys are as likely to play with dolls as girls, after a study on Christmas toy catalogues found girls were nearly seven times more likely to be shown engaging in activities linked to caring or nurturing than young boys.
Hoping to socially engineer a future in which men and women are indistinguishable, the Let Toys Be Toys campaign claims that presenting play in a way that suggests some activities are linked more to boys or girls inflicts “long-lasting” harm on children.
While Let Toys Be Toys insists that gender stereotypes are “tired and out of date”, research suggests that the sexes have a biological predisposition to certain toys, with children as young as nine months-old preferring toys specific to their gender.
The trend has also been seen in other primates, with scientists having observed that male rhesus monkeys preferred to play with wheeled toys, such as toy trucks over plush dolls, which were preferred by the females.

My 5 year old grandson’s Daisy Buck 400 shot BB repeater sits in my bedroom ready for Santa to deliver on Christmas Day. He was promised if he continues to make good decisions at school and home he might get one from Santa. When the little tyke told me he was getting one, I of course sang out “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out”. He has not watched that Christmas classic movie yet…
My family spent Christmas at my mother’s parents’ home, in very backwoods Florida circa 1955. I received a bb gun. I was in third grade. My older brother took me hunting down by the lake and showed me how to kill a little birdie. Saddened by the poor little birds demise, I cried. In January we shipped out to Puerto Rico and left my bb gun at the grandparent’s. Three years later I eagerly anticipated returning to claim my weapon. And the fascination continued for 60 years. Christmas day in 8th grade two of my buddies and I received pellet guns. We killed 18 squirrels that day…We received a rebuke when we targeted squirrels in the yard of the lady who gave out whole candy bars at Halloween. We agreed not to hunt on her property after that.
When my little one turned 5, she got a daisy, too. I started teaching her gun safety with a bolt action suction cup dart gun when she was 3. I can’t wait to get her out there on something bigger when she’s older. Makes me wish I had kept my Maxim or my M1919. Seeing a little girl, man or, uh, “woman” a crew-operated weapon would be fun.
Hmmm. Not very “traditional” now that I think about it. I guess I want her to know traditional, but I also want her to know she can go as far in life as she wants. She loves books and learning and science and I feed her as much as she can handle. At this point, she probably knows more about the human body than a lot of adults. We cook together, do arts and crafts, go to gun shows, do nature walks and ID and eat wild foods, look at rocks and learn about geology, build circuits from an Elenco circuit kit (built a radio the other day), and watch cartoons. In the past, we’ve built a solar oven from a bigscreen TV fresnel lens, done a night walk with a thermal imager and NVGs to spot nocturnal wildlife (and prove there’s nothing scary in the dark), and I’ve supervised her while she cut veggies with an ulu knife (safer, since hands are never anywhere near the blade). She tells me she loves learning and wants to know everything. We want to homeschool, so I hope that passion for learning never dies like it would if we trusted the public schools with her.
My 3 yr old grandson got an archery set (rubber-tipped arrows), but the BB gun will wait until he’s six. The just-turned-two l’il guy is getting a teddy bear that can be made to open its mouth and bare its teeth in a menacing snarl; he’ll love it! He already has a flexible wooden snake that when made to move makes a hissing sound. He chased a 3 yr old girl around the living room with it, much to everyone’s amusement except the girl’s.
We all live in what the pc-sjw crowd would think of as a “backward” (i.e. rural) part of Argentina happily devoid of such people. We still say Merry Christmas (Feliz Navidad), have a “living” Nativity scene, boys wear blue, girls pink… We’re not deplorable, though: we’re incorrigible!
