President Coach

Guest Post by The Zman

When I was a kid, I played a lot of sports. The one coach I hated was my freshman football coach, whose name I no longer remember. He was the classic Type-A personality, at least what popular culture has come to think of it. The guy was always on edge, ready to explode into a purple faced rage, which meant everyone around him was always on edge too. The guy found a way to get under everyone’s skin. He had some way to needle every player on the roster, often with some sort of nickname that stung a little bit.

The thing is though, the guy managed to squeeze out more from the roster than logic said was possible. In my case, I was always just at the point of wanting to bash his skull in with my helmet, but I channeled those pleasant thoughts into execution. I was not giving that prick the satisfaction of making a mistake. Even though I hated the guy, he did make me and my teammates better players. That meant we had more success on the field. I still recall the joy of winning with my teammates, but I don’t remember the coach’s name.

My guess is everyone who played sports growing up had at least one of these types of coaches. Bill Parcels was famous for playing head games with his players. He was big on keeping every player on edge, even his stars. At the NFL level, the psychological aspects of coaching are more complex, but the underlying strategy is the same. You make the players doubt themselves in a way that results in their natural hyper-competitiveness kicking in, so they push themselves to the edge of their potential.

I’ve been thinking about this watching Trump torment Congress, especially the Democrats, over immigration. He’s not just making the open borders people nervous with his rhetoric. He is getting under the skin of his allies and his own staff. The blockheads in the gentry media are calling it the Jell-O strategy, but it is a safe bet that none of them ever went outside as kids, much less played competitive contact sports. In the world of high-pay, low-work professions, the hard driving boss does not exist.

What Trump is doing with his comments about DACA, in particular, but immigration in general, is keeping the issue boiling. That is Trump’s natural style of negotiating, but it has the benefit of keeping immigration patriots slightly ticked off and highly engaged in every aspect of the process. Congress has seen their e-mail flooded with messages opposing amnesty. Their voicemail boxes are constantly full. This puts pressure on Congress to do a deal and get the issue off the agenda for the midterms in ten months.

Steve Sailer compares Trump to George Steinbrenner. It is a good comparison as they both have a similar style. Both men understood that pressure reveals character. The great players, the great deal makers, rise to the occasion when under pressure. On the other hand, the fakers and losers crack under pressure. If you read Trump’s book or listen to people with whom he has done deals, you see that he is always looking to bring things to a boiling point, where everyone is under the gun to get something done.

That’s what Trump is doing with DACA. He’s cleverly made this the goal of the Democrats, thinking they will push themselves to the breaking point to get it. At the same time, the laundry list of immigration reforms has become the all or nothing end game for immigration patriots. Trump’s public statements are keeping the good guys fired up and willing to hammer Congress on the finer points of immigration. Every time Trump says something positive about DACA, the phone lines melt in Washington.

There is no question that this style of managing people does get the most from those willing to give their all. It also boils off the people who like to talk about maximizing their opportunities, but unwilling to do what it takes to accomplish it. In the realm of sports, this result in better teams. Bill Parcells was a wildly successful coach because his style gets the maximum from the roster. Trump’s success as a businessman and media personality is largely built on getting the most from top people in their respective fields.

Whether this will translate to politics is hard to know. One constant that comes through from people who have done business with Trump is that he is exhausting. The never ending competition and wrangling over details wears people down. In business, you can always get new people when the old ones wear out. In politics, you can’t easily get new supporters. His style could end up exhausting his base. How many times can someone call their Congressman, enraged about immigration or trade policy?

That’s a question often asked of sportsball coaches. How long before they wear out their players? How long before the team stops responding? The great ones seem to get that and they make sure to reward their players so they keep wanting more. Trump’s zingers on twitter or when speaking in front of a crowd may serve that function. He has an uncanny way to saying the obvious in a way that outrages the enemy and amuses his supporters. Perhaps that’s enough for President Coach to get us over the goal line.

Thanks for that, Zman. Makes a lot of sense.

We’ll see. Bet there will be amnesty, with no wall. The more things change the more they stay the same.

I hate to say it but I think you are correct. The Republicans have no staying power and no real convictions. POTUS will seek a show victory and hearld it to high heaven. Unfortunately, it will have zero substance. An amnisty is forever while a slow donwn of chain migration can be quickly repealed by a democrat Congress and appropriations for a wall can evaporate. Maybe some luck on the diversity lottery repeal but if chain migration is allowed it is a shallow win.

I think he knows that if he allows any amnesty without Wall funding, he’ll lose his base. He can promise to veto anything that doesn’t give him what he needs – Wall funding, for sure and maybe end of chain migration and moving to merit-based. If Dems and RINOs side with illegals and Trump sides with Americans, that’s a dynamic he’d gladly ride all the way through the midterms.

I didn’t like the football analogy at first, but he went on to make sense. The Lefties are coached by red-faced screamers and the players are getting tired of it. That’s good news for the Right.

As an aside: the winningest coach in college football history (John Gagliardi, from Div III) always ran no-contact practices. “Save it for Saturday, boys. The game is rough enough”, he always said. When you relentlessly beat on people, they grow tired. We should encourage the Left to continue this tactic.

Despite Zman’s good analysis of Trump’s excellent negotiating tactics, I think politics is more about core beliefs than tactics. I can see Trump’s tactics working for awhile, but people deep down want to see and identify with his core beliefs.

If his penchant for wheeling/dealing causes him to drift too far from his base’s core beliefs, he will find big trouble. What is going to get his base off the couch this November to keep Congress from going Democrat? Clever tactics aren’t enough.

The left is a bunch of open-borders-demanding, pussy-hat wearing, safe-space seeking, CO2-fearing jagoffs and trannies. If that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is.

I’m reminded of Band of Brothers. All the original men who signed up for Airborne & ended up in Easy Company under Sobel hated him. A prick to the extreme, he drove the men under his command hard. Sobel didn’t give a damn about being liked. His degrading punishments for chicken shit petty infractions had a galvanizing purpose, similar to what Zman describes. His sole focus was to train the best men to be an elite group, far and above all the other soldiers. He was a bumbling idiot, when it came to maneuvers, and his men threatened desertion on the eve of D-Day, for fear he’d get them all killed. They all hated him, but more than a few honestly admitted that during 2 years of training, Sobel MADE Easy Company what it was.
I see similarities with Trump, and some of the people forced to work with or under his direction.
If he thinks anyone on his team isn’t up to the task under pressure, or a bad fit, they’ll be swept aside and replaced. Nice? When it’s warranted. A cold calculating, effective decision maker, with a clear sense of what goals he wants achieved, that make the most sense for the country.
There is disagreement on much, but he’s not a pushover.
And someone is always ready to bitch, about how he could be doing better, in areas where no improvement has occurred. Yet.
Lots of shit to try and clean up.He isn’t done yet. Let him keep working, and we can judge him at the end of his service.

Good analysis. The deep state has been doing this tactic for years with the sheep. Look at 9/11, everyone rallied around that idiot Bush to go bomb some brown people because they saw a “threat” that focused the mind. Although sickening, this “united” everyone around the cause.
Zman asked “How many times can someone call their Congressman, enraged about immigration or trade policy?” – My answer, and I suspect the answer of a lot of us “deplorables” is – as many as it takes. Hell, I will put my phone on speed dial, and set my computer to spam my congress-critter all damn night and day if I have to get in to their thick, self serving skulls that I am done with open borders and libtard policies.
Trump is simply using that same unifying technique of a “disaster” but focusing in on what buttons are needed for his base to stay focused and engaged.

The Dems keep dragging out that old canard that the American people are so in the tank for the Dreamers, but that’s got to be a lie (and not just because their lips are moving). Schumer et al. found out rather quickly that the Dreamers were pretty far down the list of things important to their base when they fought on that hill last week. Given the hysterics of the Hispanic protesters outside Schumer’s house when he caved, it seems obvious for the very first time that an outside force (Trump) is driving a wedge between two factions of the Dem base – the illegals against the working class whites and poor blacks. As opposed to the Dems doing the wedging against the hapless Repubs, as is the usual case.

I don’t think for a single moment that Trump was being ingenuous when that amnesty offer was made; he knew they’d be too stupid/greedy to call his bluff. The libs are STILL Charlie Brown to Trump’s Lucy, falling for the football fake-out every time. As Q says, “These people are stupid.”. Meanwhile, the Dems shafted their Dreamers (who do vote) yet again! Twice in the span of a week.

I used to question that whole 4D chess against checkers meme, but I don’t anymore. This guy knows warfare, and he’s surrounded himself with military leaders.

I love it when the Dems liken negotiation with Trump “like Jello”. That’s precisely his format to frustrate the other side. Maybe he is playing “7 dimensional chess” after all!
