Cognitive bias occurs when we make subjective assumptions about people or situations based on our own perception of reality. This can lead to irrational decisions and judgement calls that affect those around us. They can alter the way you see everything without you even realising it.

Identifying the problem is the first step towards rational thinking. Here are 24 distinct biases that you need to be aware of – from “declinism” (believing the past was better than the present) to “fundamental attribution error” (judging others on their character but yourself on the situation).

It is my sincere desire to provide readers of this site with the best unbiased information available, and a forum where it can be discussed openly, as our Founders intended. But it is not easy nor inexpensive to do so, especially when those who wish to prevent us from making the truth known, attack us without mercy on all fronts on a daily basis. So each time you visit the site, I would ask that you consider the value that you receive and have received from The Burning Platform and the community of which you are a vital part. I can't do it all alone, and I need your help and support to keep it alive. Please consider contributing an amount commensurate to the value that you receive from this site and community, or even by becoming a sustaining supporter through periodic contributions. The “Know Thyself” infographic was put together by the talented Jesse Richardson. It breaks down 24 world view-altering biases with brief explanations. There are also a few tips on how to avoid falling into these logic traps yourself.

If you require a constant reminder on how to think rationally, you can download the above graphic in poster form here.

So I should hire the 20 year old female with sleeve tattoos and face pearcings to represent the company because she is probably a good person once I get past all the shit screwed tobher face
Don’t assume anything about anyone …? Don’t depend on 63 years of life’s trials and tribulations to advise and consent regarding any person place or object .

No!
You should hire a properly educated clean Scandinavian lady, gorgeous from top to toe, hard working and loyal.
I have some experience.
I eventually married her 35 years ago and we are still happy with healthy successful non dope craving children.
So, there must be something wrong with us!

“In-group bias”

You unfairly favor those in your group.

Like feeding your children before you feed the starving children on another continent? Or helping a friend rather than an adversary?

Yeah, that’s a terrible bias to have.

More like assuming everyone in your ethnic group is superior to everyone in another ethnic group, or that every Muslim is superior to every Christian or other non Islamic religious group.

Or the opposite, for that matter.

I was wondering if this would step on a few toes. Mine are a bit sore. I disagree with the placebo effect. It assumes there is no bias in science based medicine.

Awareness of the bias is what is important, both your own and those of others.

That’s the only way you can keep them from standing in the way of discovering the truth if you are a truth seeker.

It’s impossible to avoid biases, they are the way the brain works to a large part, but is is not impossible to overcome them when they are presenting a false picture of the world to you.

@ Boat Guy and whoever-the-fuck-you-are:
You just can’t be THAT obtuse, can you?
Talk about dissonance. Those reactions are about as shallow as any I have ever seen, and I have taught/applied Cog awareness for years. My experience was with incarcerated youth sex-offenders, and they have nothing on you two.
I just can’t see how you can construe ‘assumption bias’ into a hiring practice for your company’s positive image. She might very well be a good person, but how does that reflect on her ability to represent the company, or perform the required task? Being aware of what makes us tick doesn’t mean park your brains and experience at the door.
Or how does ‘group bias’ get twisted into somehow neglecting your own people/family to favor others?
That is NOT what this is about. Almost any of those kids I taught-most with serious criminal mind-sets – could teach you guys the basics of cognitive self-awareness.
These concepts enhance our understanding of why we do/choose/believe certain things. That’s it. Just another tool to make better decisions.
I’ve seen corporations spend $100k just to have their exec.s learn these things. Self-awareness is never a bad thing.

You are probably an imbecile.
Perhaps I should have left “probably” away, but I tried to stay polite.
I am happy not having to meet your demented offspring.

Awesome. Just how much experience do you have in that area? I would say, with a high level of certainty, that my experience far exceeds yours. I helped develop and refine the whole Cog program for OYA.
Nothing proves a point like going all personal/offensive instead of actually extending an explanation, even if it can eventually be disproved.

Apparently calling someone obtuse brings out the down thumbs. Next time try using a word that is kinder, like dumb or slow.

Thanks. Maybe I should have used ‘intentionally obtuse’. Neither of the gentlemen I referred to seem to be stupid or dull, just in error.

Why are you trying to establish bonafides on the internet?
You might as well say, “I invented the subject. I’m an acknowledged expert in the field. And I banged your mom last night.”

@gilberts –
Ala Al Gore, 🙂
Very true. You don’t know me, and as such there’s very little weight to those claims. I won’t argue that one bit.
I guess it boils down to whether my statements give credence to my claims, or not. And what my comments on other threads reveal.
OTOH, I really don’t care if anyone believes me or not. Doesn’t affect my day one bit. And sometimes, I might bullshit just to fuck with people, to watch their reactions. Hm, maybe I’m actually an advanced AI, still learning human interactions. LOL.
Either way, all of us might actually be far different than who and what we claim to be.

10-4. The only time I have been hurt is when I didn’t value my own judgment.

Homeopathy administered to my infant daughter instantly relieved her febrile seizure and no further intervention was necessary. She is now a beautiful, talented, successful woman. Evidence to me is what I see with my own eyes.

Conventional medicine is an industry and with a few remarkable exceptions cares little for the individual patient. Put twenty or thirty million dollars into a research grant and you can purchase what ever ‘evidence’ you require.

Psyche is the profession that has, under pressure from The Left nutcases, tried to normalize all kinds of degenerate behavior (like homosexuality, transgender nonsense (they used to be transvestites or, for those who want to carve off their parts, insane).

Then, they get unhinged when U don’t go along with nutty attempts to remake language and reality.

Oh, and btw, we need to start taking back the English language.

I call “feminists” what they truly are: misandrists (man haters), female supremacists, and simply nutcases. Drives them nuts. Well, drives them nuttier than they already are.

Constantly calling them crazy and pointing out why also works to chip away at their hijacking of narratives. Fight fire with fire, then drop a nuke on these imbeciles. Don’t treat them like they’re respectable either. They’re the real deplorables.

Overall,a good article Bob.
Like most others,I don’t agree w/all of it but I can sure look back & see where some horrendous decisions I’ve made were because of emotions, prejudice, fear or other types of faulty reasoning.
