I’m gratified that my most recent Orwell piece has generated discussion in the form of this post; as well as Hollywood Rob’s.
Perhaps it is very appropriate that more questions are raised because no one has all of the answers; we’re all just trying to work it out.
Whenever (((THEY))) come up in the discussion, my eyes tend to gloss over a bit, because I truly don’t think blame can be assigned to any one particular factor or trait. On the contrary, I believe to do so is, perhaps, a little too convenient.
I see intelligence, ideology and choice (i.e. morality) as opposed to geneology alone. This, in spite of the fact I am as conspiracy-minded, as anyone here; which to me is just another way of saying open minded.
In that vein, I have researched (apocryphal?) documents and prophetic writings; including the Bible’s Book of Revelation.
On Hollywood Rob’s recent “Words Matter” post, the concept of language was discussed as a means of control; which, by that definition, has come to be understood as being “Orwellian”.
In the Bible’s Old Testament, as humans were constructing the Tower of Babylon, it said God confounded their language because nothing would be impossible to them:
The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
– Genesis 11:6
Then, in the Book of Revelation, a “new Babylon” is referenced whereby a mark is received on the hand or forehead in order to buy or sell.
Since that’s never occurred in all of history, in my view, it would require computer language and the creation of a matrix, would it not?
Now that raises the question as to how a book that was written two millennia ago, could predict that. I don’t know, hence my open mind.
Then, where things get really interesting is in Revelation 18 where the reader is instructed to “come out” of Babylon (the matrix?) and refers to the “souls of men” as a commodity.
Moreover, all throughout the Book of Revelation, there are references to the church and Israel as separate entities; which, in turn, raises the question of whether or not the God of the Christians is a Zionist.
Perhaps, it all comes down to interpretation after all that is, in the end, predicated on the words of humility or pride.
As I’ve stated here before: All debates are rooted in theology; one way or another.
Indeed, and I would argue that existential philosophers have been wrestling with these concepts for hundreds of years, if not 1000s dating back to the Greeks.
We can agree that there are universal truths in nature and the universe and I would argue that as time progresses in these most uncertain of times, things will become clearer for some and more confusing for others.
I think most of us can agree the trends point towards a cashless society.

I do not believe there are any revelations in the Book of Revelation. None.
All that any author has to do to get it right is to ask himself “what is the worst possible thing that can happen?” and go from there. That humans would trip over one another in a race to enslave themselves isn’t a new concept. It has been going on for thousands of years and at the time the Book of Revelation was being put to paper, Romans were selling themselves into slavery because they could no longer pay the taxes being demanded by the flailing empire.
The Book of Revelation is the oldest surviving dystopian science fiction novel. It should be read in the same way one might read Brave New World or Animal Farm.

The Bible (for those of us who speak English, the KJ) is actually an easy book to understand. One just has to observe a few simple rules. 1) It says what it says to whom it says it. 2) It means what it says to whom it says it. Whether one chooses to believe it or not is the question must be answered.
How difficult would it be for the Creator of the universe to write a book that His creation might understand? “Holy men of God spake AS THEY WERE MOVED BY the Holy Ghost”. Human penmanship, Divine authorship.
