While I love dogs(and yes, cats)we do not deserve their love. That said,as they are kinder then us we get their love any how and perhaps if we ever smarten up as a species can even learn from them, hopefully.

Cannot add to the good things that are said about dogs. Teared up right now reading this. Last week I put down my faithful protector. Gracie my Shar Pei. Dogs do not have the capacity to be evil.

Dogs are amazing. Had to put down my boy, Dallas, last October. He was a Lab/Chow mix ,about 65 pounds and 14 years old. He traveled with me all over the U.S. Logged 100’s of thousands of miles. Still think about him every day and don’t know if I’ll ever have another dog that will measure up to him.

Live your life like a dog…
If a dog was the teacher you would learn stuff like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory.

Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout … Run right back and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

And never trust anyone until you have sniffed their butt.

For those that have lost their canine companions I understand how you feel. They aren’t just ‘dogs’, they are a part of our lives.

I have fourteen cedar boxes in my living room with the ashes of my basset hound fur-kids. Each has their name engraved on top and their collars (purple for the girls, green for the boys) with their names and my phone number embroidered.

peTUNiA’s beloved octopus toy sits beside her urn.

The dogless will never understand the love and bond that we can make with these beautiful creations. I feel sorry for them. They miss out on a wonderful gift from our creator.

A house simply is not a home without a dog…

“…To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring – it was peace…” — Milan Kundera

“…Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man, without his vices…” — Lord Byron

Seems like a good time, not sure of origin:

When someone asks you a dumb question wouldn’t you like to respond like this?…..

Yesterday I was buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for Athena the wonder dog at Wal-Mart and was about to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I’m retired, with little to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again.

Although I probably shouldn’t, because I’d ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified , she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no; I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter’s ass and a car hit us both.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!

WAL-MART won’t let me shop there anymore.

“A house simply is not a home without a dog…” (or dogs)
YUP, nailed it. Had three until december when I lost one. Having dogs all my life I find it easier to handle the death of one if you have more than one. Three seemed to be perfect as sometimes if there are two, the survivor becomes as depressed as the humans.

Those are great photos. Dogs are so great. But the last photo seems to show another dog off to the right, just seeing it’s paws and part of its head, same color as the dog laying on the guy.
I wish I knew the story behind these photos.

My big beasts are part of the family. Big dogs are a lot different than little ones. When my big dogs are called, they think about whether they will do as asked. Maybe, maybe not. What is in it for them is part of the calculation. Oh, they keep an eye on us, but they are not nearly as attached as littler dogs we have had. They are independent.

Let them out for a run the other day. They found either a long dead sheep or kangaroo. Of course rolled in it, and then grabbed a big rotting bone each and galloped around. They would not come, of course, as they figured out they would lose their precious rotting bones if they did. Had to bribe them. They stunk like you cannot believe. Bathtime then.

Dogs are disgusting. They will eat and roll in the most awful things.

Would not live without them. Going to hang the bones they over the fence with a sign saying “Remnants of Last Tresspassers”.

Truth, dogs are disgusting. You forgot to mention they will eat their vomit.
I’ve had to carefully pull plastic bags or strings out of my dogs ass after he ate trash.
We love them. We overlook their flaws as they ignore ours and love us no matter what.

jj,
you ain’t kiddin–
i’ve found that dogs that are from working lines are the worst–
i’ve had a couple of labs & a couple of shepherds that would head straight for a pile if in the yard & worse if we were somewhere else–
they gotta blend in & hide that wolf smell–
