With virtually all details about the perpetrator behind yesterday’s tragic Jacksonville shooting, David Katz, having been disclosed in the past 24 hours, one question remained: what was his motive to open fire at the Madden NFL 19 competition at the Jacksonville Landing entertainment complex, killing twp people and wounding 11 before taking his own life.

One day later, the Associated Press reports that according to court records and people who knew him, Katz had a “weird” online presence and spent time in and out of psychiatric facilities as a teenager. and had been hospitalized for mental illness. Divorce filings from Katz’s parents say that as a teenager he was twice hospitalized in psychiatric facilities and that he was prescribed anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications.
The records show Katz’s parents disagreed deeply on how to care for their troubled son. Katz’s father claimed his estranged wife was exaggerating symptoms of mental illness as part of the couple’s long-running and acrimonious custody battle. They divorced in 2007.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Katz stayed in the Jacksonville area the night before the shooting, possibly at a hotel. He then went to the eSports competition carrying two guns but used only one during the attack, Jacksonville Sheriff Williams said. Investigators say the guns were purchased legally in Baltimore from a licensed dealer.
As previously reported, Katz allegedly got upset about losing the game, at which point he started shooting other contestant. Katz then died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Other gamers at the tournament said Katz was rather quiet. Shane Kivlen, a friend of one of the people killed, said Katz didn’t talk much with fellow gamers, either online or when they met face-to-face for Madden tournaments, the AP reports.
He said much of what he and others knew of Katz, they learned from his baffling style of playing the game.
“(Katz) would do kind of weird stuff online that other people wouldn’t do,” Kivien said. “He would catch a ball and just start jumping out of bounds and stuff when he could have gotten more yards, just hurting himself. I don’t know what he was doing.”
Kivlen said Katz was smart, “but something was off about him.”
He says Katz wasn’t known to trash talk with rivals. But after winning a championship last year, Kivlen says Katz “got up and let out the weirdest scream ever.”
EA Sports listed a David Katz as a 2017 championship winner. Katz had been active in eSports, tournaments where video game players compete and get seen on social media playing. He was believed to be known as “Bread” and won the February 2017 Buffalo Bills tournament of the Madden NFL football game.
On Monday, investigators said Katz specifically targeted other gamers. Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said during a news conference that video surveillance of the shooting shows 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore walk past other patrons at a pizzeria and head to a back room where the tournament is being hosted before he opens fire.
The Baltimore Sun reported that Katz was a 2011 graduate of Hammond High School in Howard County, and also attended the University of Maryland previously, but was not a enrolled this semester, university President Wallace Loh said. He enrolled beginning in September 2014 and majored in environmental science and technology, a university spokeswoman said. He did not live on campus.
ATF and FBI agents searched a Baltimore home on the 1200 block of Harbor Island Walk on Sunday night in connection with the rampage. They arrived at the quiet row of nearly identical brick townhouses around 6 p.m. and searched the property for just over four hours, according to Baltimore ATF Public Information Officer Amanda Hils.
Steve Buchness, a bartender at Little Havana, a Cuban restaurant across the street from Katz’s neighborhood, said he heard the alleged shooter lived nearby, but he didn’t recognize photos of Katz he saw online.
“I bet you he’s a loner, but I don’t know,” he said. “You’ve got to come in a lot for us to recognize you as a regular. People are on some weird stuff these days, you know?” He said “So no, that doesn’t shock me.”

Physiognomy is your friend. Learn it, observe it, become aware of it in your surroundings and take whatever precautions you need to protect yourself and your family.
You don’t encourage your children to play with rabid dogs, you don’t hang out with people suffering from TB or the measles and you should definitely keep your distance from adult men who spend their time playing children’s game when they have faces that clearly show signs of mental instability and drug use. It is not something you could miss if you were even semi-conscious.

Seriously, I do need a gallon of syrup. I was going to buy some from a guy who makes it local (here!) but then decided when you’ve had the best, there is no going back. As far as the gaming issue goes? I worried a bit about my son early in college when he got involved in the gaming clubs, but then, one weekend after he’d won another tournament and gave me the bag’o’prizes (I love the gizmos and gadgets put together by the vendors!) he told me he was giving it up. He said he had come to realize he was not at the level where he could make a living “gaming.” So, instead of doing half-ass at college and half-ass at gaming, he would put gaming on “pause” until he got his degree. I didn’t believe him at the time (thinking he was blowing sunshine) but he did exactly that.
Now, he never looked like these psychos, but some of those young men (and women) he gamed with were kind of scary.

Blaming anti-psychotic drugs for these shootings makes little sense. Correlation is not causation. Maybe it’s not the medication – maybe it’s the mental illness! Yes, mentally ill people are often on medication. If you think they’re bad on meds, you should see them off their meds.

I’m against “universal background checks” for guns because I think they’re a de facto national owner database (which could facilitate confiscation). I’m against doctors being required to report people’s depression to possibly preclude gun or ammo purchases. I’m against taking away guns without due process, but there should be an expedited way for families of the mentally ill to go to court to have arms taken away from those who are clearly not of sound mind. It sounds like this kid’s dad was in serious denial about the degree of the son’s mental illness. The guns were legally purchased recently. The dad should have done a short much as possible to dissuade that. Easy for me to say. We all want to believe our kids are fine.
Isk,that’s a tough path as many states now allow govt. to seize your guns just on someones word with no real proof/something I loath.I am not sure how we deal long term with the mentally ill in a positive way,especially ones prone to violence which I believe is a minority in the numbers of mentally ill.

I think there are larger problems with young men. In my experience raising one, one issue was that everyone got a trophy. The majority of parents did not want or allow their kids to face any adversity. So, when they are finally told to move on with their life, on their own, they don’t know how to deal with any adversity, or losing. They’ve never experienced it. Just my two cents.
I’ve fought hard to get my kids NOT to take any ‘trophy’ more than 3rd place. They would say ‘why dad, they’re giving it to me’. So finally one day when they actually worked hard to accomplish something, the light went off. ‘I get it now dad, I earned this with hard work and it means something to me.’ ‘I’m throwing out all those crap trophies’ ‘and i will respectfully decline anything less’. yahoooo…….
I was involved with many of the activities, even coached some, and when I told the promoters not to give past 3rd, they all said the same thing, that no one would come. I disagreed, and said it would attract and create desire, and let them deal with some adversity. Only 1 in 5 agreed with me and did something about it. A lot of parents would complain if their kid didn’t get some kind of ‘trophy’ Very sad.
So wealthy or at least well healed mommy & daddy could not come to terms regarding their fucking nut job offspring . With multiple mental health issues spanning many years now we blame an FFL dealers for processing paperwork approved by the Maryland State Police , oh excuse me I forgot the Maryland State Police stamp your firearms permit app NOT DISAPPROVED . Bravo for them and their legal chickenshit . Now they will attempt to sink a law abiding businessman because the State Police could not find out this man had mental health issues that at the very least requires deeper investigation yet mommy & daddy knew .
