Fuck the Paul Harvey “God made a farmer” routine. That old shtick is trotted out every so often. This isn’t 1890 with Mah and Pah Kettle milking the cow at 5am.

Those fuckers are taking subsidies hand over fist. Wheeling around in F450 Platinums and Sierras. Going on the annual deep sea fishing trip to Baja. Throwing a fit when they hear that people get upset when they hire illegal aliens.

Once again, fuck farmers. Support Monsanto and ADM instead.

People’s impression of farmers is warped by those mid-80’s Farm-Aid concerts by Willie Nelson. You mean that era when commodities went bust and stupid ass farmers were up to their eyeballs in expensive equipment that they bought on credit? Fuck farmers. God made accountants too.

I didn’t just pull what I said out of thin air. Facts can be mean. We set up these totems and icons in our society (like the military guys “securin’ the homeland”) and most people think it’s so. It’s not.

I’m not talking about preppers with 10 acres of plum trees. I’m talking about actual farmers with a couple million in out-buildings.

To each his own. Organic = diarrhea. As a matter of fact I wish more food was irradiated for pathogen control.

Also, I just have a hard time telling the difference between a “farm fresh egg” and a “Denny’s grand slam egg.” It’s psychological. An egg is an egg.

@ JR – I think you’re trolling us, but, what the hell? I’ll bite. You say you can’t tell the difference between a farm fresh egg and a Denny’s egg. If that’s literally true, it’s because you’ve never paid attention. I’ve had backyard chickens for over 5 years now. There’s a world of difference.

Go buy a dozen farmer’s eggs and go buy a dozen grocery store eggs. Crack one of each in a bowl, side-by-side, and observe them.

The first thing you’re going to notice is the color of the yolk. The backyard egg will be bright orange, like the color of a Tupperware lid. The store bought egg will be a pale yellow color, like the color of a yellow Crayola crayon.

And that, of course, is before you ever taste them.

Do a blindfolded egg taste test. The Pepsi challenge of eggs will find only a random pattern.

The egg on the left is what you are probably used to eating. It comes from an industrial model factory farm. The chickens that produce these eggs are fed a single type of feed that is made up of GMO corn/GMO soybean plus an admixture of fillers including wood pulp, ground feathers, as well desiccated and temperature treated manures. They do not go outdoors during their lifetime.

The egg on the right is the kind we eat. The chicken spends it’s entire life with true free range lifestyle and go into the coop at night for protection from predators or to lay, but that’s about it. They feed on insects, larvae, worms, seed heads, grasses and whatever wastes are left behind from feeding the pigs.

There is almost no comparison when it comes to flavor. Like the difference between Velveeta and Brie. I don’t have anything to prove that there’s a difference health-wise, but you seem like a smart guy, what do you think?

“…raw milk is dangerous.” So are cars, electricity, water, gravity and knives but I bet you use them every day.

You do understand that the entire planet is awash in pathogens, bacteria, viruses and germs? There is no surface, material or airspace that is free from them and the only way our species could survive is by the development of antibodies by our autoimmune system.

There is no avoidance. The most dangerous pathogens found on Earth develop in hospitals because of their use of antibacterials and antibiotics.

You must be aware of this. Or not.

Raw milk is far healthier than pasteurized milk, easier to digest, boosts immunity, increases bone density, builds lean muscle mass, improves nutrient absorption and reduces allergies. Last year the CDC reported 48 million food borne illnesses, raw milk was responsible for 42.

You’re a fan of accountants, you do the math.

Actually heating milk to the high heat needed in the pasteurization process changes the size of the molecules at which point it becomes injurious to the body. Also the heat kills the enzymes and much of the nutritive value.

Yes, medieval Europe was awash in pathogens too, when this was the dominant attitude, people bathed once a year, and lived to the grand old age of 42.

Excellent, HF. You get 100 points for the post … and 10,000 points for trying to reason with a massively mutated moran.

To add to your thoughts …. let’s not forget that the human body is TEEMING with microbes. In fact, without microbes, we would not be alive.

=====

“A “standard man” weighing 70 kilograms has roughly the same number of bacteria and human cells in his body, researchers report online January 6 at bioRxiv.org. This average guy would be composed of about 40 trillion bacteria and 30 trillion human cells, calculate researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. That’s a ratio of 1.3 bacteria to every one human cell.”

Don’t blame JR Wirthless, he is a victim of the pesticides/poisons and genetic modification of what he eats. He believes an egg with a ultra pale yolk offers the same nutrition as the egg with the dark orangey-yellow yoke. Even better, he believes radiation is good for you and fails to understand that radiating food renders it void of enzymes and nutrition. What a maroon.

Let this poor creature be a lesson to all as to the danger of non-wholesome food and pesticides.

Most of the farmers I know struggle to make it from year to year. Every one of them has a “day job” in addition to running the farm just to make ends meet. They get out there and do the work themselves, with family members and occasionally neighbors as needed to get shit done. None has ever hired an illegal. I remember growing up having my grandfather show me his tax return of $9,000 of income for that year raising cattle and selling some dairy. They buy used equipment and run it, fix it, run it, fix it, year after year until it’s worn the fuck out. They throw almost nothing away, especially food. The chickens, dogs and cats get anything (which isn’t much) the family won’t eat. I do know one guy taking advantage of the system who grows tobacco – the US Govt pays him not to grow it, or rather sell it, on the US market, so he sells it on the international market instead. None of these guys are “living large” as you describe it.

Yep I’m one of them damn farmers, I drive a fancy Chevy Silverado four wheel drive with carpet on the floor and air conditioning and a am/fm cassette radio and a title dated 1978. The I get in my big ole 1980 combine and listen to Rush on the radio or my 1982 tractor. Do you know how long you have to sit in a tractor cab at 4.5 mph to get 18,000 hours on the meter? Not complaining just trying to make a living growing grain and hay. Right now it’s 8:30 PM and the tractor and drill are still going planting fall crop and I just got done loading a truck with hay. No I don’t hire illegals, just me and my 3 teenage sons. Might just take 2 weeks off this winter, but it won’t be on a beach in Mexico.

What to say?

I think you’ve got corporate agriculture confused with farming. One is a form of strip mining that measures its success based on units per acre. The people who run those kinds of operations aren’t farmers, they are project managers or floor supervisors. They work with things that no farmer would ever use like herbicides and pesticides, they poison the soil and the water – the antithesis of adding tilth, of good husbandry. A farmer’s purpose is to improve he quality of the holding he lives on, to raise healthy clear-eyed children, to be independent and resourceful and to provide his own sustenance from the land he occupies. It isn’t about profits and losses anymore than bookkeeping is about feathers and soil. The price that the farmer is paid is in better health, deeper sleep, liberty and self-reliance, and a superior working environment. Money comes and money goes and people who spend their entire lives fixated on that surreal goalpost are almost always the most miserable, mentally unbalanced and spiritually corrupted people you will ever encounter. I should know, I’ve done both.

The very act of industrializing a natural process is akin to saying a money launderer is an accountant- they do the very opposite. One looks to balance a ledger and to demonstrate profits and losses for an accurate record while the other seeks to obfuscate the truth through complex rigging of facts using bogus data.

A guy who beats someone to death with hammer isn’t a carpenter, c’est nes pas?

And if you can’t tell the difference between an egg you get at Denny’s and one from a free ranging chicken then you probably wouldn’t notice the difference between a beautiful woman and a transvestite.

EOM.

The only thing this entire conversation proves is that those on the right of the spectrum can be just as narrow and dense as the ones on the left. The same people who were conned early on by Glenn Beck when he was on Fox News. Someone with the title “administrator” has to be the smartest guy in the room right?…..crickets chirping.

I never read the Hardscrabble Farmer post because he’s a bloviating idiot. I scroll past him every time. Almost as useless and uninteresting as that Maggie woman. If he was Z-Man I would have read it.

Is that a picture of him?

This country has more AG perks than you can shake a stick at. Literally billions in USDA direct subsidies, subsidized AG loans, subsidized AG insurance. If you’re “hard scrabble” after all of that maybe you should be a mechanic instead. There are all kinds of “hardscrabble” people in this world. I’m sure some guy just got home from work at the Greyhound station. Why should the word “farmer” make a difference?

Fuck self righteousness and putting certain jobs on pedestals. A job is a job, some are hard some are easier. Some are filthy and some aren’t. I have a friend who has to work in the San Francisco sewer system, filled with rats, roaches, used condoms and hypodermic needles. He earns every penny. I work an air conditioned office building, yet some days I would rather deal with rats in a sewer than the ones who walk on two legs into my office.

Reminds me of when I worked in a factory building mining muckers (loaders). One of the engineers was out in my bay working with me, which we had an unwritten law against. Engineers weren’t allowed to touch tools. So he had this really stupid idea that he was trying to prove was viable and he had me making tacks with the welder while he smacked them with the single jack (short handled 4 lb sledge) to make the 2 pieces of steel fit tight together. He’d irritated the ever living crap out of me so to get even I was putting the tacks in corners where the hammer couldn’t go and he wasn’t able to smack them down. He got frustrated and threw the hammer on the floor which was asphalt and it bounced up and hit me in the knee. I went into a rage and picked up the hammer and chased him out of the building with it. That boy was running like a deer. As he was going out the door the hammer whistled past his right ear close enough I know he heard it. Lucky my aim was off by a hair or I’d probably still be in prison.

I really don’t care if someone has disdain for farming, to each his own.
