Fearing one’s government then is not the same as demanding that one’s government thrust itself into the center of every matter one can imagine?

The quote on Thoreau is questionable. He agreed with the sentiment but went much deeper:

I heartily accept the motto, – “That government is best which governs least”; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which I also believe, –

“That government is best which governs not at all”;

and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient.

Government is an association of men who do violence to the rest of us.
– Leo Tolstoy

A man is no less a slave because he is allowed to choose a new master once in a term of years.
– Lysander Spooner

It is self-evident that no number of men, by conspiring, and calling themselves a government, can acquire any rights whatever over other men, or other men’s property, which they had not before, as individuals.
– Lysander Spooner
