The Quickening

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

An ill wind threatens to rake and churn up the Atlantic coast this Labor Day as a live-action metaphor auguring a more general wreckage to come in the final four months of 2019. More than most years, this holiday weekend seems to mark a boundary between past and future, between ends and beginnings.

The tremors of August appear to mark the end of the ten-year bull market run, a.k.a. “the recovery,” a last-ditch central bank orchestrated campaign to pretend that economic growth is infinite on a finite planet. The magic of credit — “money” untethered to resources — drained economic mojo from the future so that we can watch Miley Cyrus videos while snacking on Lay’s “fried pickle with ranch [dressing] flavored” potato chips. Yes, that’s an actual product — also, another reason that America is bankrupting itself on medical costs. The chains of consequence are long and punishing these days.

Gold and silver seem to be signaling two things: coming inflation and political turmoil. Debt accumulation around the world has passed the point were even prayer to every known deity will avail to prevent a horrendously destructive work-out of loans that can never be paid back. Default makes money disappear. The response, of course, will be to print more money untethered to real stuff. An orgy of QE could easily drive stock markets higher, only those markets will be indexed to money losing its value. All this will seem like so much metaphysical bullshit to citizens who can’t pay twenty bucks for a pound of hamburger. And it would greatly aggravate the political situation at a time when many of those same aggrieved citizens will be looking for lamp-posts to hang some one-percenters from.

Cue the rise of the redistributionists, that is, the people who want the government to determine who gets what and where to get it. Or, shall we say, who to take it from. Elizabeth Warren is leading the pack for now — the Oklahoma once-Republican grandma turned Leon Trotsky wannabe. I’ll give her this: she’s a helluva cheerleader. And she’s energetic for an old broad, prancing around the stage in her spandex yoga pants, arms akimbo, head vibrating. I wonder, though, whether voters (those aforesaid citizens) will remember that she vowed to give free health care to border-jumpers. Or that she pretended to be a Cherokee for career advancement at snooty Harvard.

A rowdy-dowdy financial smash-up will tarnish the Trump MAGA brand for sure. But will the Golden Golem of Greatness simply stew in the oval office or try some desperate new stunts to salvage his quixotic political career? And will his shaky marriage with the Republican Party veer into divorce court, with the party turning to a steadier and more conventional figure in the coming election year? They’ll get beat anyway as economic depression mounts, but they’ll save face in defeat. That is, if Mr. Trump manages to not start World War Three in the meantime.

Odious as he is to many, history will record one salutary effect of his term in office: the RussiaGate ploy alerted Americans that there truly is a Deep State with its own self-winding agenda. A few perp-walks upcoming may have a chastening effect on future Swamp critters entertaining a higher calling, as the slippery James Comey put it — meaning, using the powerful machinery of government for your own purposes.

However, there is a possibility that the 2020 election will be such an unholy mess, with contested poll results in key states, lawsuits flying in every direction, and monkeyshines in the electoral college, that it will be ironically left to the Deep State to try to save the republic (after their recent attempt to wreck it). Such are the bad feelings in politics a year out, that both parties might stoop to anything. Don’t rule out a Pentagon intervention in the Homeland to straighten that mess out. Unlike classical Rome in 44 AD, the USA is not on the verge of empire, but leaving its high times behind. It took another four hundred years for Rome to Collapse. America could easily accomplish it in five or ten, considering how complex and artificial our economic arrangements are.

I sense another change in the air: the retreat of Wokesterism to the intellectual carnival tent it crawled out of. The New York Times staff might believe it can easily swap out its failed RussiaGate flimflam for a general mau-mauing of “racist” America, but they are already overplaying that hand. With the economy tanking, we’ll have enough problems in this land without a race war, thank you, Dean Baquet. I suspect we will have seen the end of this on campus, too, as the entire higher ed system finally begins to detect that it is whirling around the drain.

Enjoy your hot dogs and frosty brews today as you stay glued to the Weather Channel. We’ll know by Friday how Dorian worked out. And happy Fall!

For a 2X Obama voter JHK has finally figured it out, too bad he spent the greater part of his life as a liberal Democrat, but yes I think events are catching up with his predictions. Silver is up again today, over $18.50 as of this morning on JMBullion, up over 4 bucks in about two months, there is a reason for this, and when it hits $20.00 a boat load of derivative contracts kick in and that will be a cat 5 financial hurricane.

He mentions hyper inflation, caused by QE.
it that were to happen, then it already would have happened.
China printed 20 trillion (their version of QE) since 2008, while the west has done the same, only they call it deficit spending.

No my friends, this is the new normal, our fearless leaders and crony banksters will continue doing what they have been doing (aka status quo) until it does not work. They are not smart enough to understand the damage that there scheming does.

If you read between the lines, all this hype in the media now, about a recession, is just hype, designed to put fear into you, get you to buy that new TV now, before the tariffs are in place.

Remember, these are the same scumbags that pushed russiagate for 3 years, so, just keep remembering that the media is a house of liars who have brought you nothing good, ever. There is no such thing as news anyways, it is pure propaganda, wrapped in soap and bladder control commercials.

Every story your read in a paper or see on tv, just think “what is the opposite, that is probably more closer to truth”

Epstein is not dead
Russia did not sway the election
Hillary did commit felonies
Obama was the Manchurian candidate
911 was an inside job
Etc.

I read nothing but jibber-jabber. No substance at all. But then again this is Labor Day. But I have something to say.

During 2019 I have been observing a trend that the media seems to be lightly covering but I feel is a big thing. And that is all the protesting coming from the general population in many countries. Hong Kong is now the focus in the media of that trend. But what about France, England, Belgium, Germany, Brazil and many other countries not covered by the media?

My instinct tells me this trend is going to grow strong in the coming months and it is going to get ugly; probably starting with Hong Kong.

So far riot police are holding the line but it must be expensive for the countries involved. There is going to come a time when the rubber bullets and tear gas is not going to work. Then the government will probably start shooting people. When this happens as it is already starting to happen in Hong Kong then things are really going to get ugly.

This reminds me of the movie, “A Bugs Life” when the ants finally got brave and stormed the grass hoppers in their midst demanding more food than the ants could give them.

If one pauses a moment to think about the size of the general population in countries compared to the size of the government and their army of enforcers it compares to the ants and the grass hoppers.

The herd is getting restless because they can no longer afford the taxes and the suffering caused by stupid government policies and excessive spending on offensive defense policies.

Government has to be careful. If government starts shooting their citizens down in the streets it could cause a revolution. The sheep may turn into angry bears going after the goats (riot police) and then go after their masters in government.

It will be civil war. And in war people have crazy thoughts.

Well that is my 2 cents for Labor Day. I think there is more substance in my comment than what the author of this article is saying.

Happy Labor Day to all. In spite of all the problems we have in this country at this time in history I have faith that the pendulum of our immediate moment in history will change for the better.

That is not to say that we will not suffer pain in the transition from worse to better.

Skeletor should go to jail for fraud. I figure Trump will win and we have four years until some total Dufus gets elected (Democrat dufus)and socialism is shoved down our throats. Then, it will all go downhill.

Are you a capitalist or a want to be capitalist? It looks like from the trend of the people; right now subjective, that capitalism is going to be replaced in this country by socialism. But a new kind of socialism where the workers will share in the profits of the corporations.

Right now the material problems of the workers caused by capitalism cannot be solved by the capitalist system; like low pay, because the capitalist owners will not share the profits with the workers who really are the ones who created the profits in the first place.

This is plane to see for anyone that will open their eyes and look.

Have you ever asked yourself why a person can become a billionaire? There is a finite amount of resources. Wealth is created by developing these resources into usable items and it takes a work force to do this. When the profit from the production of these resources go into the pockets of a few and not into the pockets of the many that made this possible then the problems of today come into focus.

This needs to change and it is going to change.

I don’t know if there will be “a new kind of socialism” or not, but there won’t be “capitalism”. To have capitalism, one has to have capital. Problem is, no-one really has capital: they mostly only have debt, and assets which are stranded, with diminishing returns.

The fall in net energy per capita, and the drop in EROEI for all energy sources, is what is really underlying the negative-interest phenomenon.

The main human problem is believing in irrational things (religion, infinite growth on a finite planet, green new deal.. whatever makes us feel better). A correlative human problem is innumeracy and a lack of education in the basic sciences.

It is irrational to believe that humans have fewer problems without religion, in particular without the pillar of accountability after death.

Capitalism is anti-infinite growth. Financialism is the source of infinite growth and is not capitalism. Capitalism is what keeps happening when Venezuelans buy their stuff off the black market. Which is why it doesn’t really need a name, it’s just called people trading what they have for things other people have. If you’re trading something you don’t have, or promises, you’re down the path of all dead endisms.

I know that the people who work hard or go to school longer and put forth the effort make more money. Workers don’t make the same money as company/business owners. Without a real skill, you never make much. We have a society that thinks it’s entitled to everything.

As is always the case, the few are attempting to take from the many. Is further analysis really necessary?

To add to all the fun seems free speech is becoming a precious commodity.I attended the straight pride parade in Boston and really thought folks on the edge of exploding.I will say the Boston Police were allowed to do their jobs and did,was wondering due to some attempted last minute moves if they were going to be allowed to do their jobs.

I attended not because feel the need for a straight pride parade but the need for freedom of speech for ALL.

I do not share kuntzler’s optimism that we will ever see perp walks of the treasonous cabal.

I’ve been following whitney webb on MintPress and the extradinary research she has done to include details on clinton at mena airport and barr’s involvement, acting as cia’s casey rep in those iran contra activities, leaves me without any confidence in the current DOJ.

I’ve read that there are no ex-spies, they leave the trade only in two ways: barr worked for casey.

A good example of the DOJ mindset is the travesty of Jessie Liu continuing as DC’s attorney=again, travesty, even WaPO published an article complaining about her and her office, where cases go to die.

Not a good feeling in general about DOJ (and the FBI which currently is a joke).

There are no ex-spies?

Look no further than Snowden and Assange.

They’re still on the intelligence payroll and yet people are so desperate for heroes, they are latching on to them as such.

Agree with the author’s musings on the 2020 presidential election. My guess is that numerous blue state governors and democrat controlled state legislatures will officially, citing nonexistent state laws, refuse to accept the election result if the dem loses. Then it will truly be 1860 redux.
