THIS DAY IN HISTORY – The destruction of Atlanta begins – 1864

Via History.com

On November 12, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta, Georgia, destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea.

When Sherman captured Atlanta in early September 1864, he knew that he could not remain there for long. His tenuous supply line ran from Nashville, Tennessee, through Chattanooga, Tennessee, then one hundred miles through mountainous northern Georgia. The army he had just defeated, the Army of Tennessee, was still in the area and its leader, John Bell Hood, swung around Atlanta to try to damage Sherman’s lifeline. Of even greater concern was the Confederate cavalry of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a brilliant commander who could strike quickly against the railroads and river transports on which Sherman relied.

During the fall, Sherman conceived of a plan to split his enormous army. He sent part of it, commanded by General George Thomas, back toward Nashville to deal with Hood while he prepared to take the rest of the troops across Georgia. Through October, Sherman built up a massive cache of supplies in Atlanta. He then ordered a systematic destruction of the city to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it. By one estimate, nearly 40 percent of the city was ruined. Sherman would apply to the same policy of destruction to the rest of Georgia as he marched to Savannah. Before leaving on November 15, Sherman’s forces had burned the industrial district of Atlanta and left little but a smoking shell.

Absolute barbarian (my apologies, Yo). Because of this asshole, we nearly lost most of our apple biodiversity when he scorched orchards. And it wasn’t just what he did…it was what the Union did to Virginia and North Carolina, raping and pillaging.

Do biodiversity a favor and plant a couple Red Rebels! 🙂

A simple concept, defeat the enemy and keep fighting until the enemy knows in his marrow that he is defeated and capitulates. Gen Lee being an honorable man decided not to asymmetric as his subordinates advised and decide to surrender. The rest of the Confederate army melted away or surrendered also. Sherman vilified by my ancestors as he was….strategically was correct and he broke the (already) defeated South forcing them to realize internally it was over.

Alternatively, Germany in WWI was not occupied and destroyed substituting strategic defeat for actual capitulation…..allowing for the unpleasantness to continue in 1939…spare me the conspiracies, while some are real, the primary event that allowed Hitler to rise was punitive reparations demanded from (mostly by France) a Germany that had not admitted to itself it was defeated……

Thus all of our wars of choice/empires never really provide the Sherman level of visible defeat upon the “enemy” or Target….let’s not make that mistake with a negotiated resolution in the upcoming spicytime should we prevail.

So burning out women and children, stealing anything possible and leaving them to starve is considered a suitable way to win a war?
What this bastard did to the natives out West was a war crime against humanity.
Lessons learned are still carried out by the US Army, bombing hospitals, false gas attacks, shooting down Maylasian Airline Planes, destroying people, countries, and their cultures all over the World.
God’s judgement is on everyone of us because of murderers like Sherman. It rains on the just and the unjust.

Yes, Sherman made it abundantly clear to the people of the South that they lost…..thus the peace has lasted for 160 years…..vs. the false victory of WWI that barely lasted 20 years. Take your pick…..pay the butcher’s bill in full the first time or pay an even higher price on round 2. This highlights the utter strategic stupidity of the post-WWII era….all of the colonial wars, MIC wars, police actions, wars of empire that were not fought to a definitive victory without mercy simply extended the suffering.

Sure the MIC folks benefitted financially at the expense of the nation’s treasure and the blood of its citizens.

Israel is an interesting case….80 years now of constant war/insurgency simply because they lack the will to fight to a permanent victory…..kind of crazy….why send tanks and infantry into Lebanon/Syria (which didn’t work out so well a couple of years ago)…just stand back and nuke the fuckers until beg for mercy and recognize Israel’s right to exist and self police their Jihadists to never ever even think about crossing the now permanent borders….instead we have Arabs of various tribes (and their leftist enablers) holding onto the fantasy that they will someday reclaim their lands…..that is not helpful to anybody.

There was no peace, just war by other means.
Reconstruction set the South back another fifty years. Carpetbaggers and freed slaves voted without any skin in the game, creating more problems nothing solved. And somehow, despite the atrocities the North perpetrated during the War, the Northern propagandists claimed the moral high ground – that ending slavery (that Lincoln said was irrelevant if the Union could be preserved) somehow justified their war crimes, Reconstruction profiteering and plundering, and stealing half of Virginia to make West Virginia.
Then later on came LBJ and all the liberal bullshit that has created the secular, mentally-ill society we have today. 160 years not of peace, but of an endless, relentless, demonically-inspired pogrom of Southern culture, customs and personnel for a permanent loss of civility, decency and honor. When Lee surrendered, Grant let him and his aides keep sidearms, horses and servants to go home and rebuild. Now we have SJWs doxxing people to lose their livelihoods based on uncomfortable truths they have uttered. Who was nobler, Grant or Lee? Who was more honorable, Stonewall Jackson or Sherman? Who was enriched by the war and its aftermath?
Revise history somewhere else, we know exactly who those bastards were and what they did. And as a result, the CW 2.0 will not be anywhere as restrained as the first one was, since honor and decency and civility have been lost and cannot be reclaimed.

I think you are making my point. My ancestors died and those that didn’t lose everything decided that living in the swamps of central Florida was a good option…..but for 160 years besides a little low-level KKK activity, not a damn thing was done about Sherman and the North’s fucking our shit up…..and yes the North had their way with us with carpet baggers and reconstruction and lots of discrimination right down to today…..and we didn’t do a damn thing. Total defeat will do that..

By historical standards Sherman was a moderate victor. There were no pyramids of heads . There were no fields full of thousands of impaled bodies. No killing fields like Cambodia. There was no intentional mass starvation which Academia ignores in USSR history. Sherman was a yankee son of a bitch but the people of the south were to busy staying alive to continue the war.

Continuing to elect black mayors and all-black city councils, has kept the tragedy going well into the 21st century in this city.

I have been a serious Civil War buff since I was 10 and read every book Bruce Canton wrote. Once I understood the true scope of American history, I knew I was a butternut Johnny Reb.

This link is the best 16 minutes explaining the battle of Gettysburg combining animation and reenacted battle scenes with actual photographs I have seen to date. It is an engrossing spectacular presentation.

Although I was raised in Penn, & NJ in a Yankee political and lifestyle culture, I rejected both at an early age. Growing up I had family in NC who I visited as a boy, was stationed in NC in the Marine Corps, and moved to NC permanently in 1993 after having lived in New Orleans, Texas, Georgia, and Florida for most of my adult life. I love the SOUTH, especially the DEEP SOUTH and all it is and stands for.

I have an Irish ancestor who fought for the South I am proud of.
