QUOTES OF THE DAY

“There is no clean way to make a hundred million bucks. Somewhere along the line guys got pushed to the wall, nice little businesses got the ground cut out from under them. Decent people lost their jobs. Big money is big power, and big power gets used wrong.”

Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye

“The very banality and innocence of the first act only allowed the blow to fall afterwards with more awful effect.”

Robert W. Chambers, The King In Yellow

“There is no trap so deadly as the trap you set for yourself.”

Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye

“Big money is big power, and big power gets used wrong.” – a bit incorrect. Big money buys big, powerful government, and big government gets used wrong. A private business only has a limited amount of power, and most businesses could NEVER get as big and power as they are WITHOUT the direct or indirect assistance of government. It begins with the Federal Reserve and its money creation machine that bypasses the normal and moral process of honest banking, in which interest rates (the cost of money), are directly impacted by savings rates. From there, licensing fees, permit costs, property taxation, regulations, and millions of other government actions, skew the market in favor of businesses large enough to afford the burden, or wealthy enough to buy enough legislators/city councilors to “influence” the nature of the legislation in their favor. Mr. Chandler was a great student of human nature, and wrote some great works of fiction, but he clearly didn’t study government enough or its interaction with wealthy business owners.
